New approach

I've just finished Sean Mulligan's Rudder refinish in an 11 page PDF. It's at the bottom of the M23 Boats and Owners page or as always, best to just go to What's New. I think it's an interesting new approach to the technical articles. The photos are still crisp and clean as there is but one per page and this leaves lots of room for the written information. I believe the best part is, the entire information is in a downloadable file (PDF=Portable Document File). You can D/L the file and refer to it anytime you wish, including to print it out and take a copy with you. Based upon your responces, on or off line, I may over time do all of the Maintenance and Modification albums in this manner. If it's not a good idea, let me know. Was it anyone on here who won the ebay auction for the Monty 15 in Peoria, AZ? Looks like a great deal. $2800 for a decent looking boat, trailer, motor. Sometimes Ebay is awesome! Congratulations to whoever it is! Sean

Mast bend?

Hi All: Here's a question for you rigging experts out there, like Jerry... I noticed that my mast seemed to have a slight bend aft when I bought it. I didn't initially worry about it, thinking this is the result of some normal overzealous backstay tensioner application. But I've just put the mast up the other day and sighted it a little more closely. The bend certainly seems concentrated at the spreaders. It's not a SHARP bend, but it isn't a smooth curve going all the way up the mast either. Played with the shrouds some, and can't remove the bend with headstay tension. We're talking about, maybe, 3" at the masthead, though it's hard to say for sure. Do you folks think this is anything to worry about? A pair of after lowers to the deck would pull the mast back in column pretty quickly, and I DON'T want to replace a mast. Boltrope shrinkage

Hi everybody: Sorry, I keep coming up with more questions... I've got one of the original M17 sails from '79. It's in pretty good shape, considering its age. But it looks like I may have a little boltrope shrinkage. Has anybody else experienced this? I wanted to ask before I go hacking up the stitching on my old sail, since replacing it will likely take a while. Any recommendations for a good long-distance sailmaker? John: Crud! I was in San Diego this past weekend. Stayed at the Dana, and watched all the boats going up and down the channel. Didn't see any Monties, though. I thought about renting one of the Catalinas for a little while, but in the end didn't have the time... too busy doing family stuff. Made me anxious to get back... I finally rented a slip for the year, and I've gotta finish up a few odds and ends before my boat is back in the water, after being out since last May. Aloha from Honolulu!

Hello everyone. Ron and I recently purchased Little Breeze (15'), here in Honolulu. Michael Mann sailed her across the Pacific over twenty years ago and I thought you'd be interested to know that we rescued her from obscurity a few weeks ago. I found her alone and neglected down at the other State marina. We purchased her through the brokerage who had her up for sale and brought her back to the Ala Wai marina right away. We are live-a-boards on a 46 foot Cal motorsailor in the marina. I have pictures posted on my blog and there are earlier stories where I wrote about her trip home. I titled them "The Little Boat That Could". There are pictures of her in the photostream on the blog and also under my photo albums in the drop down menu. The album is LITTLE BREEZE. We lost the centerboard last weekend but have a new one on order through Montgomery. We took her out sailing without the board which was fun even if we couldn't maneuver with much agility in the high seas and winds. Since Mike had her rigged for a long journey and had many additional items designed into her, Ron's been in contact with Montgomery to find out what to replace and how to rig her for our use. She has the original mainsail which is a little worn for wear but functional, along with six other sails. Mike had every sail imaginable for the conditions he might encounter, I'm sure. Hi Gang, Back in my Big Boat days, the "ideal cruising boat" was a 50 footer for a couple. Lots of living space; lots of storage. When I moved up to a 38 footer, we found: the extra interior space was unusable because of the layout. Dropping the main with a 17 foot long solid spruce roller reefing boom meant that if I didn't hit the boom crutch, there was no way my wife could lift up the end and drop it in place. It was too heavy. It also had wheel steering, .....all the way at the aft end of the cockpit. If I, sitting behind the wheel playing Captain, desired a cup of coffee, or a beer, my poor Admirable, had to get the drink in the galley, climb the companionway steps and walk the length of the cockpit to be able to give me what I had requested. By comparison: our 29 foot Tripp-Lentsch had tiller steering. This put you, the Captain, Watch Holder, Course Steerer, or what-have-you at the forward end of the cockpit. When I needed something, the Admirable could make a sandwich, open a beer, or hand out a cup of coffee, or give me a screwdriver (tool not drink) and place it in my hand. Nah, Bigger ain't better. M15s are ideal for two! Connie & Katrina
