Rick Easy Hercules!!! Holly Cow I thought I felt some seismic activity the other night...probably you exploding your poor boom. Keep blowing stuff up like that and I'll have ocean front property and you'll need that boat to visit any of the other lower "47" states. Where were you when I was beating the stinking keel out of our boat??? My rudder has a little bit of warp in it, now I'm scared that when we finally get together for our first sail I'll walk behind my trailer and find you with two spinters in your hands and a sheepish grin on your face!!!. (but stay away from my rudder) :-) Only kidding!!! I'm the guy who always puts the perverbial "last turn" on the bolt just to make sure its....SNAP! Ok enough of that Try Minneys Yacht Surplus in Cost Mesa, CA. These guys have used everything and usually for great prices. I'll bet they have some broken masts that they would cut a piece off of. Here's their website. www.minneysyachtsurplus.com Sailors that live in this neck of the woods make it a point to go to this place when in Socal. You never know what the heck you'll find. A lot of the stuff they handle is for boats bigger than ours but I bet if you call them them they could hook you up. Might be worth a call if you can't find something closer. Sean

Hydeaway 2 is pretty much ready to sail now. The woodwork is finished, wiring is all done, the stove, GPS, depth sounder, solar panel, and sail handling hardware are all installed, and I even took it sailing for the first time on the Snake River on 4 Jan 2006. Weather was nearly 50°F. If we weren't going to Tahiti next week I'd be tempted to hitch onto it and head south until I found a warm place to sail some more! Big thanks to everyone out there who has helped and is helping out with info and advice on our( and #83's) dilema. Gary O., Howard, Tom, Bones,Rick, Theo, and the man himself Jerry M. all have been in touch with me helping me make a decision on what to do to get number 83 on the water again. Without you guys I'd probably have curled up into a little ball and gone and sat in the corner! I'm still trying to decide the best plan of action. I have even considered seeking professional help just to get this stumbling block behind me (probably need professional help of the phychiatric kind). The repair job that Gary referred to on a Catalina 25 I remember. Don't let Gary's modesty fool you! I saw that job, what it took, and the expertise with which he put that boat back together. Not sure I've got that ability within my toolbox!!! If Gary was still in the sailboat repair business my 23 would be sitting beside his shop as we speak! Biggest lesson learned so far....probably from reading about Mark and Roberta's 23 purchase. They hired a profesional surveyor to check out the boat before they purchased. Smart move. I probably would have still bought her becuase of the what the boat is, the fact that I've always wanted one, and that there aren't many out there, however, I would have known more of what I was getting into and probably would have used the info as a negotiating tool. But, that's all hindsight now!!! With the continued help of all my new Monty buds we'll get it handled and this great old boat will float again. So, thanks everyone. Sean

Sean, Montgomery 17's were built with steel punch knockouts, I believe, as ballast in the earlier models. I think they were constructed with lead ballast 1980-81 forward. Check the archives at MSOG. I hope you did not get the impression that they are built with junk metal. Small (3/16 +- in my keel) pieces of steel. I still think the 23's are lead ballast. Maybe a 23 expert will chime in shortly.? Good Luck, Gary O M-17 #316a

Sean...LAAAAME! I'm sooo upset for you!! However, I think you need to find out for sure how the balast is accessed and what it is made of. I looked at the M23 brocure that is in the msog.org website and it says that "the highly refined keel is molded in one piece with the hull and contains 1200lbs of lead". Have you seen evidence of rust? Maybe, the swelling won't be an issue. I'll ask the boatwright working on mine what he would do. Get back to ya. Sorry man. Rick

Sean, Cutting out the cabin sole is not that bad a job. I did it on Steve Witts C-25 when he lost a keel cable and the 1500# swing keel free fell to the trunk and beat the shit out of it. I cit the cabin sole out, made the repairs to the hull in this case - the trunk and keel box - then feathered the edges of the floor pieces (yes about 3 or 4 if I remember) 2 inches back from the edge, feathered the edges of the remaining cabin sole the same distance and taped them together with 4" biaxial tape. (used cleats attached to the edges to relocate the pieces at the correct height), fill the feathered area to flush with the biaxial tape,grind flush and gelcoat time - a little texture roller works great for the cabin sole.It sounds worse than it is and the first cit is the only scary one. Hey its only plastic and you know how to fix it as well or better! Chin Up big guy! And when you are done you will have additional room in the bilge. Call me if you want I may find some pictures of the job I referred to above. You are sure it is iron??? Gary O.

23 WOES

Well...must have really pissed off one of the sailing gods. Was grinding out a blister on the keel trunk. This particular blister is the only one that just kept bleeding and weeping. Ground a little deeper, little deeper.....whamo! Though the side of the keel trunk into the balast cavity. Guess what??? The entire ballast cavity was full of water. Nice. What to do...well, drain it of course. Drilled a couple more holes and water poured out for half an hour. Probably 10-15 gallons?? Started blowing air with my compressor into the cavity to dry it out. Good idea right? Figured I'd go get a couple of aquarium air pumps and just let them blow into there for a week or two. Then my buddy Gary pointed out that Monty's are full of scrap steel ballast. I confirmed by removing a few pieces and picking them up with a magnet. I know better than to even question Gary's advice and he was correct as usual. Steel+wet+air= rust and rust in a contained space=swelling. Not good. Not thrilled about the thought of having to open up the ballast cavity and remove hundreds of pounds of wet rusted steel ballast then try to re-install lead. I'm guessing that would require removing the floor in the cabin liner. No not real excited about that solution at all. I'm pretty resourcefull (aka cheap) but I am reaching the limits of my capability and patience with this one. Wonder how many thousands it'd cost to just take this one to a pro and have them deal with it. Any ideas???? Probably my payback for the 60 degree remark!!!! Sean
