Hi Sean, Glad to hear I'm doing my part to help bring an old M23 back to life. <grin> That would be great if you could make it. I've added you name to the mailing list. If at any time it becomes apparent that you won't be able to make the trip and you want your name removed, just let me know. The Shelley's and Dvorscak's are both planning on coming again this year, so there'll be at least two other M23's there. Could be more by spring. There was one in the Olympia, Wa. area last year that was hoping to be ready in time. Maybe he'll make it this year. Keep working on that old girl. I can assure you, if you make the trip, you won't regret it. Beautiful scenery, great sailing (well, some motoring), and great company. At some point, I'll need to get your mailing address and boat name and registration number for reservations, but there's no hurry yet. Spinaker halyard fouling upper furling block

I anticipated that there might be trouble with the spinnaker halyard getting fouled with the upper block (plastic head of foil) of the CDI furler so I added more distance from the top of the forestay to the block-about 7". One recommendation on the MSOG site showed this dimension as 4.5". The luff hoist of my genoa was 20' - 8" as opposed to the 21'-6" shown. At 7" spacing I still have to run both lines from the spinnaker halyard swivel block well around behind the spreaders and tie them off so that they do not interfere with the upper furler block when it rotates during the furling operation. The spinnaker halyard is still usable; if after the headsail is furled, I walk the halyard around the spreader and attach the shackle to the head of the spinnaker. Not too efficient and rather unsightly. Is there something I am missing or have others had this same problem? Note: the swivel block is on the upper forward end of the chicken-head fitting-as I recall, several inches above where the forestay pins to the chicken-head. Any suggestions? Larry, After getting home late this evening from some training for work, I decided to give myself a break and not go out and work on our 23. Heck, I have worked on it almost everyday since we acquired the dang thing. Yep, tonight would be just to relax.........until I read your post about the NW Cruise in July. 10 minutes later I was in grubby clothes scraping bottom paint and opening blisters. Yeah, it got me all fired up...and......although the chance we can make it this year is remote, there is a chance. Thanks for the inspiration and please add my email to any mailings you might send out to the folks that are going. I have seen the pics and read the story of last years trip and it sounds awesome. John, Thanks for the input. I see what you mean about searching through the archives of MSOG. I am far from the 1st to go through this process. I think what I have settled on is to follow the exact directions in the Interlux guide since that is the line of products I am going to use. Basically it says that if you can coat the metal within a few hours of sandblasting, that you can use their 2000E barrier coat on it, then after that use their Watertight epoxy filler to fill voids and fair, then additional coats of 2000E to finish and seal. After that I'll probably coat the keel in VC-17. I have used that for two seasons on my Santana which is slipped here in Havasu, and for the fouling conditions found here it seems to do an outstanding job. I have been very happy with it.......Of course that's my plan today......the plan seems to change daily! Three months ago my pan was to be enjoying sailing our new 23. hahaha. Sean

Recommendations for a Montgomery 17 Bimini Top

I am in the process of purchasing a 1977 all white Montgomery 17'. Realize this is winter, but since this is in Texas, want to install a good Bimini top sometime soon. Have seen several photos of Montgomery 17's equipped with bimini tops so am looking to purchase a navy/blue one that can be ordered and fitted from an existing manufacturer or vendor - without having to have a custom one made if possible. Keel work

Steve: Hmmm... your keel LOOKS pretty good. Have you tried pressing from the bottom of the keel with a jack instead of winching? Does it move up to the midpoint and then stop? Rust expands a lot... it can take up to 20x the volume of the original steel, so that's what I'd expect first. Once it dries out, see if you can dislodge some flakes with a few whacks with a hammer. You could also try squirting a can of silicone lubricant up in the slot. I'll get the photos of mine posted when I get a chance. I've decided to take advntage of some availble slips at the Mobile YC to wet store my M-15 at least some of the time. Thus she needs a good bottom job. I've sanded the hull and put four coats of interlux 2000E barrier coat on the hull. I suspended her from the power hoist, did the work, then returned her to the trailer after the coatings were dry. This weekend I put a fifth coat of 2000E on, waited til it was set the applied the first coat of Interlux "ultra" bottom paint. One more coat and I'll spash her. I need a dry day with the temp above 65 degrees. Sometimes hard to find in the winter, even here (thank God for Global Warming). I originally was using the belly band to lift the boat but It got in the way so I installed two lift eyes thru the teak rub strips on the gunnel just aft of the weight center. Seems to have woorked out well. I've got a few pictures if anyone is interested. Don M-15 # 620 Sweet Dream
