You know what, Steve, I just had a thought. This is a long shot, but... see the little screw at the aft edge of the slot? That's the keel stop pin, that keeps the keel from swinging all the way out of the boat. Looks like somebody replaced the pin with a large flathead SS screw. See if you can get that out before you do anything else. On mine, when I removed that pin (somebody put a bolt in mine)it was bent a little, and the clearances are really close there, like 1/4-inch or so. If that pin were bent and somehow rotated, it could be scraping against the back edge of the centerboard and causing (or contributing to) the problem. It's just a thought. NW Cruise

Hello Sailors, The planning is getting started for this summers cruise in the San Juan and Gulf Islands. The last two were great trips and the highlight of my summer. I expect this years to be just as good. The trip will probably start on the weekend of June 10th and run through the 24th. I expect we will once again spend most of the first week in the San Juans (for those who can only come for a week) and then head up into the Canadian Gulf Islands for the second week. I will be starting a mailing list for those who are interested in joining this years cruise. We will do most of our planning and correspondence "off-list", so if you think you might want to come on this years trip and want to get the trip list emails, reply to me at leyake(a)juno.com and I'll get you signed up. ...Next week I am going to have it professionaly sandblasted and we'll see whats left. Between now and then I have to research what would be best to fill the heavily pitted areas to fair the keel.... Sean, Glad to hear you got the keel out all right. For repair ideas you might want to go to the website WWW.MSOG.ORG and look through the old messages. There is a pretty good search engine there. I think I remember a note from Jerry Montgomery on techniques for fairing and repairing a rusty keel. As I remember he suggested (after it was blasted clean) to paint it with epoxy and scrub through the wet epoxy with a steel brush to help it bond. Then you can fair it with a paste of epoxy and micro-balloons and finally put another coat of clear epoxy over the faired keel to seal it. Then bottom paint of your choice. It will be tough to sand flush. I do not remember if marine-tex has any water soluble fillers (ie. talc) , if it does it would not be a good choice. Check with the manufacturer. GO M-17 # 316a

Hey Steve, I,liked the pics of your 17. Nice work on the pinrails. Don't "give up the ship" on the keel!!! What a pain in the rear, huh? Say hi to our mutual friend Charlie C. for me. We're gonna have to form an AZ Stuck Keel support group. As for me, I'm only on step 4 of a "12 step program" towards recovery from the bottom/keel blues! hahaha Sean

Yellow plaid upholstry

Does anyone know where you can get some more of the original yellow plaid upholstery? JUST Kidding! I got tired of looking at the worn, but "delightfully modern" yellow plaid upholstery and bought an $8.88 Walmart blanket and wrapped the cushions in them. Filed under "a stitch instead of nine saves time"; it is not a permanent fix, but it is much easier on my eyes. http://members.cox.net/slsail/PoorMansUpholstry.jpg I also added what I call PMP (poor man's pinrail) to replace the teak edging that are on the shelves. Not that I am constantly healing, but I like to have something more substantial to keep things from falling off the shelf when you tip. The PMP is made from scrap hardwood and dowel rods stained "teak color" and varnished. http://members.cox.net/slsail/StoveInstall.jpg My keel situation may go much the route of Sean's restoration. My plan was to free the keel up so that it was functional and then do the keel job later in the year when it is too hot to sail. That may come sooner that I thought. I floated the boat back on the trailer with the mast down and carefully trailered the boat up the dry storage spot. Through alternated means of torture I was only able to get the keel down about halfway and there it froze up hard; almost impossible to winch backup. It seamed to favor the starboard side. Although the exposed portion does not look that rusty, but I have scrapped a lot of rust from within the trunk when the keel is up. keel trunk

Steve, you are right that growth in the keel slot could have been the culprit, but strangely enough, there hardly seems to be any in the trunk itself. The rust on the keel , on the other hand, is fairly severe. It seems as though it may have added as much as a quarter of an inch to the thickness of the keel (maybe more). There are a few small colonies of shells in the extreme front and the extreme rear of the trunk. I'll make sure that they get removed, but they are not in an area where they could have rubbed against the side of the keel. What baffles me is that in looking up in the keel trunk, the sides appear totaly and completely smooth and clean. And it doesnt look like it was just scraped clean by the stuck keel, either. Since this area is not painted with bottom paint I was expecting tons of growth and possibly (I shudder at the thought) blisters, like are on the outside of the hull. When we were in Florida we lifted and lowered the keel both in the water and out and it worked fine. I looked at it while the boat was airborne on a forklift, then we pressure washed it and retracted it prior to setting the boat on the trailer. My only guess is that once exposed to air, the rusting problem sped up. 'Cause man is it rusty now! Next week I am going to have it professionaly sandblasted and we'll see whats left. Between now and then I have to research what would be best to fill the heavily pitted areas to fair the keel. I wonder what it would cost just to go to a steel place and have them cut me a new one with a plasma cutter? Hmmmmm. If it could be done for under $350 it probably would be the way to go. Figuring $150 to sandblast and then all the materials to finish it up right. I don't know. Steel has really gone up in price What would a 50 inch by 50 inch piece of 1 inch plate cast iron cost???? Might be worth checking into Sean

That is an interesting situation. The centerboard works in the water and is jammed six weeks later. It is hard to tell from the photos - how much of the centerboard was covered by aquatic life? Could little sea creatures have hardened after they were pulled from the water? How much debris was dislodged during this process? Thanks for the photos. steve Steve R. But.....I haven't done any measuring up in the keel slot yet....Your questions makes me think I should. Possibly I will cut a block of wood to just shy of the width of the slot at the bottom. If I then attach it to a stick or something and pass it up or down in the slot it will let me know if there are narrow areas by binding up. Looking up there everything looks OK. Maybe I'll try that tomorrow. Thanks for giving methe idea. S
