Hogin Sails

Scott: Good to see your post. Have missed your thoughtful contributions. I'm ready to order a new main and jib but am hesitant to order through Hogin Sails since Bob and Margaret are no longer there. Any feedback on the new owners? Rich Cottrell

M17 First Sail

The sight of balloons in the morning sky is never a good omen to the start of a sailing day. This combined with a localized high pressure area, forecast temperatures around 106, and a road closure on the way to the lake would not deter me from my first sail with my recently acquired M17. I finally managed to launch and catch the last 45 minutes of the dying morning breeze and then slatted around for the next hour in the most powerboat chop I have experienced in several years. I retired to a cove and jumped in the lake to cool off and spent the rest of the day hiding out under the bimini and sun shade. In short, the sailing was sweet, however short. Having just come from a 26 footer, the responsiveness was quite refreshing. In some respects, much like the first time I sailed my 7' Fatty Knees (former boat) the first time. Everything worked, although I needed some "retraining" to see where everything was. The only failures were the topping lift (that I considered replacing when I inspected the rigging the day before) and a sticking centerboard. Last weeks thread on sticking centerboards will be helpful. The 106 degree temperature took its toll it terms of fatigue and I may not be as eager to do that "first sail" experience soon, but it certainly has whet my appetite for another sail when the weather is a little more comfortable. Pennant options

I didn't really understand how tough until I was talking to the owner of a Carver 36 last weekend, a few slips away from Dolphin, who told me that he plans on 20gal/hour. Ouch! My 20gal diesel tank was last topped up more than a year ago One of the things that I enjoy about the marina where I stable Dolphin is the (more or less) 50/50 power/sail mix. I've even enjoyed being aboard a friend's trawler-style boat. It might just be the rather unusual August weather this year (we actually have wind!) but I noticed far fewer power boats out on the Chesapeake Bay yesterday. Giles Morris

Headline on AOL News... With the price of fuel going higher, Texas is looking at useing cow manure as a source of vehicle fuel. But... when the chips are down - prices will rise again! Get it chips - buffalo chips - cow chips - bull@*%#! Off topic... not for me, I hate buying fuel and think sailboats and sailors should be given some sort of reward for all the fuel conservation we provide. I can't imagine adding hundreds of gallons of fuel to my hobby? Bill

Thanks for the info everyone. And the pic you pointed me to helped a lot Howard. The missing piece in the puzzle on #496 is the center gudgeon on the rudder. Doesn't have one. No gudgeon, no kick-up. Have to rectify that... Thanks. t Tom Smith Next IT 509-242-0767

I had that happen because I put the jib downhaul to close and it assisted in pulling the pin for me, while I had the main up. This was on a P-15 (real short mast) however, it was in SF bay with 15 to 20 knot winds in a boat that I was losing confidence in fast. I rolled up the whole mess and motored back to the dock - broken pride and all. The motor boat community rarely knows when we do it right or wrong. I didn't get so much as a comment even though I came in all detached. Hair raising! I didn't go back out that day. Bill
