Tom: My bilge pump is located in the side of the footwell in the cockpit, but on the aft side near the motor cutout. I don't think it was a factory installation, but it could have been... hard to tell. At any rate I need to drill out the pop rivets, add new compound, and reseal with bolts. autopilots-What would you do?

Hi Tod, Thanks for that link. What a horrifying event. The article wasn't very specific as to the details of the collision. Neither boat sank so it sounds like a glancing blow. The fishing boat captain knew he was in trouble seeing the cruiser at 300 yards. Besides trying to hail the cruiser what else did he do? I wonder if he ever tried to move the fishing boat. Even if at anchor, it seems he could have powered forward to avoid the collision. Maybe he could have put out more rode or let it go. What would you do? Very cool. I think I would have a tendency to squirt away from stop lights at the least provication. Another autopilot story--recent and significant for performance boaters. Joyon is mythic. t IDEC Lost on the Rocks Less than One Day after Setting Transatlantic Record July 8 - Brittany, France It's heartbreaking to learn that Francis Joyon lost his record-setting trimaran IDEC on the rocks of southwestern Brittany less than one day after breaking the solo transatlantic record. One of the great things about the modest Joyon is that he's set the around-the-world and transatlantic solo records doing everything himself, as opposed to having a giant team as has been the case with Ellen MacArthur. Alas, maybe Joyon did one too many things himself. For, exhausted after finishing the tremendous record run, he put his mighty 92-ft tri on autopilot and fell into a deep sleep while heading to France. The autopilot steered the boat off course, and the next thing Joyon knew, it was pitch black and his beloved trimaran was being broken up on the rocks. Joyon's injuries are primarily emotional. Brian, our M17 came with a manual bilge pump as well, and I believe it is a Whale. I called about rebuilding mine and was given some information which I will have to re-locate. If anyone knows the approximate dimensions of the sump, please let me know... it'll save me a bunch of poking around in some very nasty water. Bulge pumps- anybody ever heard of a "chump?"

I know, it sounds like the lead-in to a joke, but I'm not kidding. My M17 (ex Stargazer) came with a nice, high-quality diaphram bilge pump. It looks like a Whale, but doesn't say Whale anywhere that I can find. The only marking on it is "chump PH" on the handle casting. It's made of plastic. Has anybody ever heard of such a beast? I'd like to find a rebuild kit for it... the rubber is starting to show a little cracking. I've also got to make an extension for the bilge pump. Does anyone sail with a bimini top?

Gary, I've been thinking of putting a bimini on my M15. Would you tell us about your set up? Two bow or three, where is it set in relation to the cockpit, is it mounted to the coamings and where is it stored when not in use? Do you have any pictures of your set up?
