Lake Almanor

Hi all, Any of you Left Coasters sailed on Lake Almanor in northeastern CA? I'm going camping around Mt Lassen Nat. Park in a couple weeks and have been thinking of taking the M15 along and maybe spending a few days at the lake. Any comments or suggestions much appreciated. --George Burmeyer M15 #385 (1986)

Hi MC: I'm certainly no wizard, but I know what the zenier diode is for. It's like a one-way valve for electricity. Without it, reverse current will flow back into the panel at night, heating the cells and draining the battery. It doesn't protect from overcharging, but it does drop the useable voltage a bit. To keep from cooking your battery, you need to size the panel to your battery bank. Unfortunately, I can't remember off the top of my head how to size the panel, but Spurr's Boatbook devotes an entire chapter on the subject. I think that the basic jist of things is that small panels are really only good for keeping up with the self-discharge of the battery. Bigger panels are needed to replace current... sometimes you need a lot of panel to refill the battery if your electrical demands are high. Dear Giles: THANKS very much for the link. I figured out that it was made by Henderson... the name and address are molded into the housing, I just couldn't see it until I removed it. Figured out it was a "chimp" from the internet... looks like "chump" because of that groovy 70s typestyle. But I couldn't find ANYBODY with a rebuild kit. I'll order one from the UK if I have to. Norm, Clint Hill recently replaced the mast on his M15. He used our M15 for measurements, took pictures, and recorded all the dimensions for future reference. Get a low pitch, low speed prop. Given a choice though, I would buy from a local dealer so you can get service. You may want to show them the price if it's far apart, but service is worth something. If you buy online, then take it to a local dealer for service, he may not be too concerned about your problem.
