Hi All: I just got a great deal on a used 3.5hp Nissan 2-stroke for my M17. I had a Tohatsu 5 on my previous boat, and it was a super engine... always ran like a charm, except the one time I flooded it. Ran like a charm after ten minutes that day. Since Nissans are made by Tohatsu (I've heard they're basically the same engine) I'm hoping this little one will run well... as well. My question has to do with prop pitch for this outboard. A 3.5HP is a touch small for a 17, so I want to get all the engine performance I can. There is a lower pitch prop available from Nissan that would work better for "moderate to high loads." (the standard prop is 7.4" diameter, 7" pitch, and their optional prop is the same diameter, but with a 5.7" pitch.) I'm wondering if anyone else is using an outboard with a lower-than-standard pitch, and has it helped? Thoughts and opinions? I've been lusting after a Forrester turbo ever since they came out. What kind of mileage do you get with that rocket? Is the bottom end torque as good as it sounds? I have been planning on the Maine trip leaving from rockland on August 29th, as Tod has had on the webpage. Hi Bo, My '87 M15 #400 had the deep port sail locker and the shallow molded starboard locker. I cut out the shallow locker to gain access to all that - otherwise - wasted storage space. Gives you the best of both worlds: the shallow locker area for small stuff, but lift out the shallow locker and you gain access to lots more storage area, which I use for extra cockpit cushions; the Bimini; the swim ladder, and my boot hook / paddle. I think I recall reading of some M15s that were only made with shallow sail lockers, but we need Jerry's input here. Connie

I thought I'd chime in about heaving to, even though I own a Potter 15 instead of a Monty. The P-15 hoves to well with the jib hard aback, the tiller hard down to leeward, and the main completely let out, which puts it in the backwind of the jib and out of play, so to speak. Set up this way, the boat comes practically to a stop, which causes the rudder to lose steerage way. The wind then pushes the bow to leeward due to the jib, and the boat starts moving again. The movement causes the rudder to take hold again, which immediately rounds the boat up, which causes the jib to stall, which stops the boat, which starts the process all over again. Very comfortable and under complete control even in 25+ knot winds. I assume the Montys behave in a similar fashion, and in fact sailing manuals indicate sloops in general hove to this way. It's important to point out that sheeting the main in hard upsets this balance. The main is thus no longer backwinded, and the boat wants to get going again. Of course, reefing with the boom all the way out is difficult or impossible. I've found that dropping the main first solves this problem. When reefing, I heave to, tighten the topping lift if necessary, and then drop the main most of the way. Once dropped, the boom can be sheeted in without having much effect on hove to balance. Once reefed, let the main out again, and raise sail in the backwind of the jib. Now you're ready to blast off anytime! If this method works for a glorified dinghy like the Potter, I suspect it will work beautifully on a Monty. Cheers Steve Tyree

Bilge Foam + Maine trip

Hi Doug, I'll take that advice. Besides being in the way of the water tank the real problem was the big blob of foam that sat above the floor. Now that it's gone I can live with foam in the bilge for it hasn't been a problem yet. The water tank is part of my attempt to build a galley around the molded in starboard cockpit locker, which with a drain installed is now a sink with a cutting board top and a drop in stove. I'm putting the tank behind the centerboard trunk because I figured that's dead space and I've already put weight up front in the way of a 60+ pound battery and a 11 pound Bruce type anchor, chain and rode. I still have a lot of space up there, but I'll fill it with something. The 6 gallon tank which is driven by air pressure, like the old VW Beetle windshield washers, is removable and will be used only for cruising, so I'm hoping I can keep it clean. Getting this little boat ready for cruising is a challenge, but fun. Early this year you sent an email to Todd asking about the Maptech waterproof charts for Penobscot Bay to Frenchman Cove. Did you get them and if so are they adequate? I was planning to buy them so I'd like to know what you think of them. main reefing

I cant find reefing instructions on the MSOG site under the rigging instructions. Can some one please give me simple info on how to rig and reef the main on the M-15. My main has only one reefing point. Thanks, Bo

locker storage

According to the M-15 manual posted on the MSOG website; "the port locker is big enough to store your motor, gas can, anchor,etc.". The port locker (and starboard locker on my M-15 are both small and sealed. Were there different build outs for different years? Thanks, Bo
