I've been anchoring out in Monterey Bay for over a month. I bought an 11 lb Bruce copy at West Marine and I'm using it with 20ft of 1/4 inch chain and 150 feet of rode in about 23 ft of water. After two weeks of dancing around the 3/8 inch rode looked like it had untwisted/retwisted in the middle. The guy at WM didn't think it had been weakened so I didn't replace it but I did add a swivel. I'm sheltered from the big swells but it's not what I would call a peaceful anchorage. When the breeze picks up the boat dances around a lot. The bottom is heavy sand with some rock outcroppings here and there. I'm now using this ground tackle as a kind of poor man's mooring. I put a 10 lb. mushroom at the end of the chain and attached a 30 ft piece of 3/8 to that with an eye in the end which attaches to the main rode. When I take the boat out I pull the rode up to the eye, detach from it and leave a float tied to the eye. It all seems to be working fine so far. Hi Justin, Congratulations on the new "Toy" They are wonderful boats and once you get familiar with them they can take you almost anywhere. As for your anchor question: You ask the $64 question, but there is no single answer to the question. Consider anchors as tools. There is no such thing as a "Universal Tool" as a glance in any tool catalog will prove. With anchors it's the same. Anchors are tools designed to hold in different types of ocean bottoms. It all comes down to what is the bottom like? The answer to that question then allows you to pick the best tool for the job; but change locations, with different bottoms, and you start all over again. For soft bottoms Danforth anchors do very well, ..............except if there is eel grass, and then the anchor might never get to the bottom, becoming entangled in balls of eel grass. They also are great in sand. Plow type anchors, a Bruce or CQR are more universal. They are heavier relative to their size, and get to the bottom easier than a Danforth will if there are obstructions such as thick vegetation. The answer to your question really boils down to: where are you sailing, and what kind of bottom is there? If your sailing horizon widens, so will the tool assortment (anchors) increase. ..............and as a final thought. One anchor is NEVER enough. Two should be the minimum. Just think, being anchored for the night, the wind is blowing, and somebody in a motorboat runs across your anchor rode and cuts the rode. Now what........? That is why a second anchor on board is an insurance policy. If it really starts blowing, then laying out two anchors insures a much better night's sleep. Connie M15 #400

Howard, Amen, The heavier anchor is always better. The 4 pound Bruce may hold beautifully, but if the chips are down, a 50 pound Bruce or CQR for an M15 sounds very reasonable to me. It may be total overkill, but it helps your spirit. On my Tripp-Lentsch 29, my "insurance policy", with experience, was a 45 pound CQR, with lots of chain and lots of rode. I never used it, but it was a mighty comforting feeling to know that it was in the forepeak, and always available, ....if needed. ~~~~~~~~~~ When we first sailed in the Adriatic, we wound up in a Bora at Pula. A Bora is a sudden high speed wind that sweeps down from the Alps and fans out across the northern Adriatic. The air up in the Alps is cold and dense. The air on the Adriatic is warm and less dense. The result is like flushing an old top tank toilet. The cold air rushes down from the alps, and for about 8 hours there is pandemonium. Then the "flush" is used up, and all is peaceful and quiet again - as you pick up the pieces, or as I did once, try and get the boat unstuck from the mud. (You dig a trench for the fin keel using a companionway hatch board) I only had one anchor - a 22 pound Danforth - and we sailed around that anchor all night long as the wind howled. The Admirable and I alternated holding anchor watches all night long till it calmed down again at dawn, and peace was restored. As our anchor came up out of the harbor bottom, my wife said, she wanted to kiss it......... The symbol of an anchor is security, and the more the better! Connie

New Boatwhat anchor?

Hi all, My wife and I will soon be going to California to meet Bob Eeg and take delivery of our new M-15. We are very excited. I have done some searching in the archives on my topic and have found good info. I am going to purchase an anchor, but still seem unsure as to what will best support my, not yet discovered needs. For a primary anchor I was thinking a 4.4lb. Bruce-type. I am expecting to encounter a variety of bottoms in my adventures. Is there a "do it all" anchor out there you can tell me about? I realize more than one anchor is a best bet, but, my focus for starters is the primary anchor. I will be happy to hear what would be a second anchor recommendation as well. Hi Justin, No real world, sxailboat answer on the anchor from me. However I have two. 1st is a small CQR, maybe 6#, in the port side cockpit locker and second is an aluminum fortress anchor that folds up and goes into a bag, on the cabin sole. I mostly day sail and have as yet deployed either from the Monty. I can say the CQR does very well in a 16' power boat. But, That's not the reason I wrote... If you've got a digital camera, how about some high resolution (1200X1600 pixels) of the boat delivery as well as some of the factory? M17 Boarding Ladder

Friends, I'm needing to replace the Windline telescoping 2-Step (over the platform TDL-2X) boarding ladder that came with our M17, with a 3 or 4 step, and probably a different model. I recall some very recent discussion of boarding ladders, but unfortunately I didn't save those emails (hadn't yet tried to use the 2-step ladder). The MSOG List archives have not yet been updated with this recent discussion. Can anybody help me out? Seems I recall someone had said that a WWP19 ladder was a good fit for a M17? Windline makes a 3 and 4 step ladder, that should be a close fit. But the over-the-platform TDL series ladders are not really designed to be mounted on the transom. They are intended to be mounted on a horizonal surface, and dropped over the side. And as such, they do not have a top step. Would appreciate help and information from anyone who has found a good fitting and functional ladder for an M17. Thank you, Randy Graves M17 #410

I put everything heavy on the starboard side to help ballance the motor, other anchor, battery, etc. What I find is; Tipperary is happiest with a couple of people or with at least a few hundred pounds in her to react properly. Heaving to without weight wasn't very consistent, especially in winds above 10 - 15 knots. However, after I weighted her down a bit, she's happy and I am too. It seems weight is the key for Tipperary. Bill M-17
