M15 towing with a small SUV

I'm going to be towing mine next week with a Subaru Forester so I'll let you know how it goes. The Forester has way more get up and go than my old Mazda MPV so I think it will tow better, and I did fine with the MPV (manual transmission.) Bobbie

When I first got my M15, I had an Isuzu Rodeo, 6 cylinder engine, automatic transmission. I lived in the hills of N. GA. I did not like the way the car felt like it was straining all the time and also did not like the vibrations I was getting off the trailer. So I bought a V-8 pick up with 4 wheel dirve. On your other topic, I tried teak oil the first two years and then last year I sanded it all down, and used a product which had been very favorably reviewed in Practical Sailor called Bristol finish. It still looks beautiful. The report on it and the manufacturer claims that you only have to add new coats every 5 years. You can find it by going to Bristolfinish.com and they will mail it to you if your local marine supply doesn't carry it. It is made in FL and has been used a lot there with good results. It is easy to apply and looks great. Time for a cool change! Sandra(Seawitch #617)

Brian, No, I would not 'prime' with linseed or other oils prior to applying Cetol. In fact, I wipe the teak with Acetone or Xylene after cleaning to make sure there are not residual oils on the surface. Cetol does not adhere well to oily surfaces. Some have experimented with penetrating epoxy as a sealer layer beneath the Cetol, but I am generally against this procedure, as I like to leave the option open for future coatings other than Cetol (a future owner, for example). Also, in many years of Cetol use, I see no need for any kind of substrate treatment. As for thinning Cetol, the manufacturer says rather adamantly not to do so. That said, I have talked to some professional finishers that have thinned up to 20% with Xylene or Interlux 216 or 333 thinners. I am very careful to pour out only what I can use within 10-15 minutes. I find that beyond that, the solvents evaporate away, and the brush starts to stick/drag. By following this procedure, I have not found a need to thin. I guess my advise would be to tear away the skin and try what you have (unthinned) on a piece of scrap wood. If it lays down/feathers well, and dries hard, you can probably get away with using it. On the other hand, it might be worth starting with a new quart (less than $30.00), and be on the safe side. We use a 2004 Honda Pilot because We wanted the 4x4 if needed. Might seem like over kill to some but the guts are there for the boat and gear.

You will have to get the Blue Chart add-on around $100 for complete details: depth, obstructions and other items (ocean). Without Blue Chart, you get the ocean/land outlines without any other details except for your tracks and waypoints. I live in Ventura CA which has a great bay with Islands. The bay and Islands show up without Blue Chart. There are several lakes near me but are not included in the Blue Chart. I would have to purchase a "land" edition for the lakes. I've sailed around the lake with the GPS on and have an outline of it now for my map. I downloaded this into the Blue Chart and keep it for reference for the lakes. I also tow/launch/recover my M15 with a Pontiac Grand Prix V6. I don't have any problems. My car is rated for 1,200#. I'll put a trans cooler on it before I go any long distance. Norm M15 #172

Cetol questions

Scott: Harvey gave me a half-can of Cetol when he sold me Stargazer, and I had a question or two about it... I usually like to "prime" teak with a light coat of thinned Linseed oil. It's usually compatible with traditional varnishes... but what about Cetol? And since this is an old, skinned-over can, what is a good solvent thinner for Cetol? Hi Gang, To add to Rachel's comments: I went to Panama City, FL from Connecticut to pick up my M15 #400. I was driving a VW GOLF VR6 GTI - manual transmission - with a Reese towing hitch. After picking up the boat, and very careful driving for about the first 30 to 40 miles to get a feel for the rig and to make sure that the boat was riding properly and noting was loose and shaking about, we reached I-10 across the top of Florida heading East. It was a sunny day; very light traffic; and as the miles went by, my speed increased. First I was driving about 55 MPH, and gradually it became 60 MPH, and after we turned the corner at Jacksonville, FL and headed north on I-95 I found myself comfortably cruising along (you never felt the M15 and trailer) at 65 MPH. The following day; again sunny, dry and pleasant, we started cruising north at about 65 MPH, but then I had to pass a slower car or truck, and the speed went up to 70 MPH, ......and stayed there. By the time I dropped off my friend in Washington, and headed home to Connecticut for the final 370 miles, the M15 / trailer and I had become one happy family. No problems pulling an M15 with the VW GOLF. Later, I sold that car and now am towing the M15 with a VW Jetta VR6 station wagon with automatic transmission. We have towed it to Maine and to Lake Champlain several times - no problems. Of course, I am easy on a car, downshift early, and keep the Revs up on the engine. ~~~~~~~~~~~~ My first experience towing was back when I bought a Bolger MICRO, sight unseen, in Bay City, MI and we were heading for Florida. We were driving a 4 cylinder GOLF sedan, manual shift. When we picked up the MICRO it had a trailer that weighed much more than the boat did. I think it was originally a trailer from a mobile home. I later measured up the sizes of the steel channels that made up the frame and calculated the total trailer weight. I believe it was around 1300 lbs. Add the MICRO, which weighed about 1,000 lbs, plus our loaded car and we were way over towing limits for that machine. It was a long and at times slow trip climbing mountains in Tennessee in 2nd gear, but we made it safely to Florida and then later, back to Connecticut again. I guess the point of my story being, even a small car can do the job if you are careful. Back in Connecticut, my first order of business was to get a proper sized trailer for the MICRO, and then I had a rig that weighed about 1250 lbs. The 4 cylinder GOLF was very happy pulling that much lighter load, and we took the MICRO to Florida and back several times. (about 3,000 mile round trips). Connie
