Hi Rick, As long as the Forespar Tiller extension fits tightly into the lock box I see no problem with locking it upwards. However, if it doesn't fit tightly, then gravity, vibration, and Murphy will guarantee that it falls out at the worst moment. Drill a drain hole and solve the problem that way. Connie

Hi Bob, For what it's worth.......... Many years ago when I repainted my 29 foot sailboat hull, using LP paint, I wound up with some sags, and brush marks. (it was tough trying to keep a wet edge moving...) My "helper" doing the painting, offered the following advice. He said back off about 10 feet from your work and take another look. What do you see? A nice shiny new looking hull. Once you are in the water, nobody will see the slight color mismatch or brush strokes. He was absolutely correct, though the sags bothered me each spring when I was getting ready to launch again. But, as the years went by, I was happy that the hull looked as good as new, and the next time I painted a hull, I was a bit more knowledgeable. I also lost any qualms about opening and filling craze cracks; or repainting a hull. Enjoy your work. Connie

Tiller Lock Box

Thanks Connie. After pressure washing my boat yesterday I noticed that the lock box holds water very well. It didn't leak into the locker so I guess I properly caulked it. Now that it's all sealed and the caulk is cured, I had the thought that if I flipped the outer plated so that the tiller would lock up instead of locking down that it would drain properly. Other than the fact that all the pictures that Forespar shows has the tiller locking down, it seems to me that it was designed to lock up. I sent Forespar an email, but haven't received a reply. What do you think about locking the tiller up? I'll probably get plenty of adheasion anyway, as I plan to grind into the surrounding gelcoat so as to be able to feather the repair. I'll let you know what I find, Bill

Hi All, I'll soon begin the task of installing my new swim ladder and adjustable motor mount. I've messed with fiberglass in several projects but never had to match gel coat. I read and re-read Don Casey's book "Hull & Deck Repair" and feel very confident in most any repair of my Monty, except the matching. Any helpful hints? Any ready made solutions? After the long New England winter I got the itch today to launch my new to me 15. I trailered down to the beach, rigged and proceeded to launch across the beach only to find it wasn't deep enough. I have a Dilly tilt trailer and that didn't help. How much water is needed to float a 15 off the trailerIt was good rigging practice anyway. Thanks for any info.
