I have recently moved to Cape Cod and purchased a 15 ft. Montgomery. I would like to sail to Marthas Vineyard.I would like to hear from anyone who has done it about: Where to launch? Where to stay (free anchorages)? What to watch out for on the crossing? And any other helpful info. Thank you so much for any response, Bo

Bo, Read through this thread http://www.boatered.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=66886񸈫 and you will get some good thoughts and launch site ideas. I have sailed my M15 out of Hyannis MA on several occasions and they have a good, free ramp with decent parking. A nice protected area to start out in with some good free anchorages In the Harbor area - beautiful spots. I have anchored many a night behind Pine island or up in Uncle Roberts Cove and have enjoyed every one of them. But it isn't Martha's Vineyard. The currents run east at 2 - 3 kts for the run of the tide then turn west at 2 - 3 kts. Don't try to fight the current. Read the tide tables and plan your trip. The strong current over the shoals create a fierce overfall that will really set your M15 to bouncing. You will find that 60 ft deep water moving at 2 kts creates quite a ruckus when it hits a 10 ft deep shoal. Does your M15 have at least 1 set of reefing points? If not get two sets and put jiffy reefing at least on the first set. The normal sea breeze off of Cape Cod is ideal for an M15 under a reefed main and working jib (110%). In order to take more sail off the next logical step would be to a smaller jib - 70% or less. As to anchorages on MV - you can't beat lake Tashmoo on the SW side of the Island. It has a very shoal entrance which keeps the big boats out so you have to time the entrance for mid tide and up. It is unmarked but rock free. Lots of sand. It's quiet, peaceful and has no commercial facility. The Cape Poge Bay on Chappaquiddick island is also free of big boats. Edgartown harbor has mooring for $30 a night and has a water taxi if you want to get to town. You have a great area to sail in and the M15 will handle it well but pick your days as the area can get rough quickly. Pleasant Bay is also a very nice cruising ground for a weekend overnight. Very protected, nice beaches, good snorkeling, good ramps and nice anchorages. Enjoy. Chesapeak Bay Cruise 2005

The Chesapeak Bay Cruise is coming soon! It starts May 28 th (memorial day weekend) at the Casa Rio Marinia , 4 mi south of Annapolis MD. We will cross the Bay to the Miles river and St. Michaels and continue to wander the nooks and cranies of the Bay for the rest of the week. There are a couple of logical break points if you only want to come for a couple of days. We have moved the date from mid June to the end of May to avoid the HHH weather patern we have gotten stuck in the last couple of years. It looks like at least 7 Montgomery boats this year so if you want to sign up send me an email. The more the merrier! Non Montgomeries welcome as well but only for list members - lurkers invited but don't broadcast the message. If you are on my CBC distribution list you will get a separate email giving more details. Connie, your kitchen to go is well executed and you did a wonderful job writing about it. Lots and lots of people are going to benefit from your effort, including me. Many thanks. I think one of the best qualities the toolbox kitchen has is convenience. Everything you need is portable and preorganized. I have a similar item in my own inventory I call my "ready bag". It contains a jumbo first aid kit, duplicates of all the toiletries I use, disposable raincoats for four, extra underwear, etc. Its primary function is to provide everything I need for an overnight trip except extra clothes, which are easily gathered together on the spot. Fast, convenient, easy, and I never leave crucial items at home anymore. Oh yeah, the ready bag frequently finds itself on board for adventures, short and long. Sail repairs--applying letters, logos, etc.

To apply letters, logos, etc, to sails, I just cut them out of a material called "sticky-back dacron" (used by Quantum Sails in Pt. Richmond, CA, for this purpose on their sails). The material comes in various colors. Ian

Hi Steve & Diana, Thanks for the compliment. The biggest expense for the tool box galley was the tool box itself. All the rest of the contents was accumulated from our "Give & Take" section of our Transfer Station (also known as the Industrial Supply Agency), from Tag Sales, or courtesy of European airlines - the plastic wine glasses, nesting cups, and the individual salt and pepper shakers. Of course, the contents should reflect your eating habits. As a long distance car travel "must have" it does a great job. Breakfast in the motel room; lunch at a Rest Stop picnic table with elegance......... and everything you need is in the "box". Like all good boat equipment it should have at least two uses, and this certainly does. Go built one and enjoy car and boat luxury. Connie

Bob, I was about to go buy another book when I had the right one all along (West System Boat Repair & Maintenance). The book is inexpensive, around $3.00. On page 8 it refers to the steps needed to use gelcoat over epoxy. Looks like my little projects will be fine with the use of epoxy only. No need to use polyester resin for the small hole repairs I've got in mind. However, they do recommend a long epoxy cure time of two weeks prior to putting on the gelcoat finish. Bill "Tipperary"

To the editor(s) of the MSOG and Monty Picture sites, Sorry, I can't remember for sure who the editors of the sites are. I don't want to come off as a whiner, but you have a wonderful pair of sites here ..... for anyone that uses MS Internet Explorer. For the rest of us who would rather stay away from Bill's (Microsoft) products, the sites are almost unreadable in spots, with over running text, text over pictures, etc. Would it be possible to edit this great resources with a program that would use code recognizable by all internet browsers so that anyone could take advantage of your considerable efforts?? Mozilla Composer (it's free) comes to mind as one possibility. I'm pretty much a newbie at website building, but I was able to put this site together using Mozilla Composer. Thanks Connie. I have their catalog, and that was the first place I looked, but didn't find anything that exactly fit the bill. They sell replacement sail letters that are adhesive backed, but even they have to be stitched afterwards. I think I'll try that aircraft adhesive that Clarence (I think?) advised, if I can find that e-mail again.
