I could not find any other supplier on the web other than ordering direct from Garhauer. We ordered one and it arrived last week. It is built like a tank! It must weigh 20+ lbs! At first I was concerned that it was an over kill for a 4 - 5 hp 4 cycle motor, but since checking I am told that 4 cycle motors, vibrate more, and weigh more, than equivalent 2 cycle's. And that this is the correct mount. It is certainly substantial and the 2 springs will easily off-set the weight of a typical 4 - 5 hp 4-cycle motor. Unfortunately, the mounting holes won't align with the old bracket (narrower). I believe the "125" in OB-125 is for a weight rating of 125 lbs. Also, the vertical travel with this mount is significantly more than the old mount, allowing it to be mounted higher on the transom. We intend to use a long shaft motor but with the greater vertical travel I believe a short shaft could also be used. I think a backing plate would be a good idea. Hull 410 is a 4 berth model, with both port and starboard cockpit lockers intact (not cut out into the interior). From inside the rear wet locker I can get to the bolts to remove the old mount, but to put in a backing plate I think I will need to install a 4" - 6" access hatch in the wet locker on the port side. This isn't so bad as the hatch will be hidden in the wet locker. For a backing plate I am thinking of using a piece of 1/2 marine plywood soaked in epoxy resin. Friends, Another option for a knot meter is to use a GPS. Simple, relatively inexpensive, no holes required. Many GPS units will report speed in mph or km, some also function as an electronic compass and a trip log. No, I agree. I loved Clinton. He left office with a huge surplus which these jokers are squandering. Bush said it, I don't have time the think and ponder about stuff. He is like a bacteria that knows only to produce toxins and reproduce. I have never before in my life would become nauseas when a president would speak to explain issues to the public. "Just wait..." was only a reference to the good and thorough environmental work that the Democrats did as opposed to the pure business focused administration we now have. If in a fictionalized story of war over resources brought on by a large and powerful western democracy are not today's headlines the way it would be written? OK, Mark, A sailing yarn. How To Build a Magnificent Sea Anchor. (in case you need one) Tow a dinghy with a centerboard slot that doesn't have a firmly fastened cover over it. Tow it for many nautical miles in the ocean. Don't pay attention to the dinghy behind you. Your attention is focused on finding the buoys ahead of you, that lead to your destination. When your log suddenly goes to 0 and beeps, the question is why? .....what happened? ....did I run aground? Sails are still full. .........boat is going up and down in the waves, so cancel the idea of run aground. But why no forward motion with the sails full and drawing, and the boat heeled at about 10 degrees? Then you glance behind at the dinghy. There she lies, - full of water, - all 9 feet of it. Water gently sloshing around inside the hull, while little squirts still come from the centerboard slot. So, get the sails down; pull the dinghy alongside; grab the bucket and start bailing, ....and bailing, ....and bailing. The volume of water in a 9 foot dinghy has to be bailed to be believed. Finally, the dinghy water level is down far enough so that you can climb aboard and really move water from inside of the dinghy back to the outside where it belongs. The moral of the story is: Never, never tow a dinghy without a firmly fastened cap on the centerboard trunk. The open centerboard trunk allowed water to squirt into the dinghy. First, just small amounts; but over the hours of the trip, as the dinghy got heavier with the water ballast, the amount per squirt slowly but relentlessly increased. Finally the dinghy was full of water, and it became an excellent sea anchor. ~~~~~~~~~~ Spring is coming! This morning we saw about 10 robins on the neighbor's lawn. Can sailing be far behind? A little advice & info please?

I just acquired an 87 M15 and I'm hoping to launch it next month. I'm putting in a simple electrical system with a solar panel to keep the battery charged and would like to mount the panel off the stern. There's no stern pulpit and I certainly can't afford to have one made. Has anyone managed to build one with off the shelf parts that looks decent? I want to install a knotmeter & depth sounder. Can anyone advise me as to the optimum locations for the transducers? Thanks, Norm Lane
