Giles, The Speedtech looks pretty good and that link from "ddaystrom" with a price of $112.25 even looks better. Thanks to you both. Giles, you say it is portable, but it looks like one could install it permanently. How do you mount yours when in use? Epoxy the holes?

Just ordered the Garhauer mount for my M-17. I'll guess the stern on Tipperary is solid fiberglass. When I drill for the mount... Should I oversize the holes, epoxy and redrill to proper size or just drill the 'glass for the correct bolts? And, should I use a sealant? Thanks as usual for all answers. Bill

Hi Bill, I installed a Fulton model MB1710 on my M17. It works very well with the Yamaha 4hp 4stroke long shaft outboard. I do have an earlier M17 with the cutout transom for motor operation. I have used a short shaft motor before, but the long shaft is a better fit. Absolutely use a backing plate, either hardwood or metal. PS, Theo may be replacing his motor mount, so you might want to discuss getting his. I have veterans benefits and visit the SF VA hospital for my needs on occasion. All I can say is, the boys and girls (not men and women) who I see with missing arms and/or legs. The distorted faces, the damage done and they will have to live their life with those problems. Now, the feds are attempting to lower the VA benefits again! Just visit a VA hospital and tell me we are doing the right thing. Wish some of that would play out on the TV! Don't get me started.

Catalina Sail...

Okay, back to sailing...Attn: Norm Bundek, Mark Escovedo & Bill Sylvester and anyone else interested... The So-Cal Potters are doing their annual Catalina Island trip see web site at... http://www.howies.net/socalpotter/ > last year there was one M-Boat along which belongs to Fuh-Shing Pan. Fuh-Shing is planning on attending this year as well. Here's what I know so far. I've used their message board (So-Cal Potters) and I've been invited to join them. I have not asked if I may invite others, but it appears, all are welcome. If we do generate interest, I'll be more than happy to contact Captain Howie (putting the trip together) to see if we may all tag along. Luckily the trip dates do not conflict with my other plans to visit the San Juan Islands with Larry Yake and group. The dates for Catalina are: Depart Long Beach "Alamitos Bay" 6AM, Wednesday June 22nd. And arrive back on Saturday June 25th. Here's a quote from Stu Rea, a participant from last years trip... "I have the June Catalina Sail penciled out on my calendar also. Didn't know what to expect when I joined the group last June. Had a great time and laughed my ass off over the 4 days. Like going to Summer Camp in your late 50's with the other kids who never grew up. Upgraded my retarded dingy this time around though. If you want to experiment with your transducer placement, Silly Putty works quite well for holding it in place. In fact, mine has been "temporary" that way under the V berth for 2 years. No signal interference, cheap, and easy to move. I am very interested in the Montgomery 15. I have been sailing on San Francisco Bay for many years (my most recent boat was a Petersen 44). Thanks for the site. I'll get one ordered right away. I was thinking about an aluminum backing plate maybe 3/16" thick. I believe the Potter boats use a metal plate. However, they aren't near as heavy in the fiberglass area as our M-Boats, so wood may be just the ticket. I'll ponder that one as I wait for the unit to show. #496 is also a 4-berth, however the port side cockpit locker is bottomless. It looks like a factory set up. Maybe wrong, but it doesn't appear to be hacked out (smooth gelcoat on the edges). I'm considering the Honda 5hp short shaft. I've got a quote of $1450.00 which may or may not be a decent price. "Tip" is still in Oregon where there is no sales tax, so I'll likely get the motor when I pick her up. CA sales tax is 8 1/4%, if I purchase here, that adds and additional $120.00, which Ahhhnold (the governator) will spend on some big business project, not to include us little guys...
