Just to let folks know, I've resumed my berth as CEO at Chesapeake Light Craft, purveyors of small boat kits and gear. I'll renew my standing offer of free forklifting of any Montgomery 15 or 17 that needs its centerboard removed. I had mine on and off the trailer in CLC's parking lot several times while restoring the CB and fairing the bottom, and I can't imagine what a struggle it is without a forklift. Also, we generate ultra-premium marine plywood scrap here the way barber shops generate extra hair, so if you ever need an odd bit for companionway slides or whatever, stop by. Cheers, John C. Channel Islands Santa Barbara

I am interested in sailing my M15 from Santa Barbara to Santa Cruz Island this summer. Has anyone made the trip? How long did it take? I would like to find other M15 etc that might want to go along. Appreciae any ideas Jim Sadler

Jim, I think I would like to go along to Santa Cruz Island, if we can find someone who has made the passage and/or has some experience. I have to wonder about sailing from Santa Barbara. Every time I have walked the beaches in that area, there was always tar in the water from 'Natural Seepage' and/or leaking off-shore oil wells. Messy! I think there is a Potter group that sails from LA to Catalina every year, which is another option for an ocean trip. If the 3:1 ration was there for power I might agree that it is more than adequate for an M15 but it is three to one for fine tuning the adjustment. It functions like a vernier. If you want a 1 inch adjustment you have to pull in 3 inchs of line. If you want a 1/3 inch adjustment you have to pull in 1 inch. I have seen two part tackles used on Jib sheets for small boats as well. These are for fine tuning jib shape as the last 2 inchs of jib trim need to be very precise for the prevailing conditions to optimize windward jib shape. I just formed a company that is going to build a Horizon Cat with electric propulsion as a prototype. I went & checked out the fuel cell company, looks interesting, they make a neat wind generator as well. I made a potential dealer inquiry; so, I should be getting a load of information from them. I'm not sure that a fuel cell is right for my current project, but it won't be long. I expect that we'll be using the Ray Electric Outboard on the cat. If this works out, we'll be doing a CP 23, Sun Cat & Eclipse as well. We also want to do both an M15 & 17, but that will likely be next year (if these things can be sold). We haven't told Montgomery this yet, but I guess we just did! Solomon technologies makes an interesting electric motor suitable for larger craft, but it's not cheap, about 16K retail. Sorry, if this comes off as self-promotion, but it's on-topic.

Hi Randy, Thanks for the great pictures of the electrical system in the M15. Of course, it would have been nice to see your version before I designed and built mine.............but such is life: you get too soon old and too late smart! ............but thanks for a lot of good ideas.
