Its a 1977 for sale by Cortez Yachts 941-792-9100 asking price $29,000 OBO. I don't know the condition but the ad says some storm damage. Bob said that this was an "Old" boat. I'd check out the great lake one first. Don

Hi Rick, I just bought the Garmin GPSMap 276c. I got the land and sea package. I can give you lots of reasons why this is good & bad. (Another time) But... First. The innexpensive hand helds have a storage problem. I used to have the Garmin Map 76s. I bought the Blue Chart CD and was able to D/L only about 60% of the San Francisco Bay. Since I may launch from any of dozens of choices, I need the entire bay (at least). The built in storage that you download to is only, I believe, 8 or 16 mb. (you should visit Garmins site for the facts). Anyway, after spending what I thought was alot. It didn't work. I sold it all on Ebay. I've also got a laptop. So, theoreticly I could have erased and added maps on demand. But, I like the idea of map in the memory. The base maps that are included will give only the highlights of areas, but not the nav. details one would like and will likely need. So, I think the handheld GPS Map units units are okay and useful , but... there could be a storage issue, depending upon your sailing grounds.. Read on if you want... The Map 276c is $1200.00 (aaaaugh), for the land & sea package. It gives me the unit, A/C charger, 12v lighter plug in, 3 different mounts, a Blue Chart CD and a City Select land CD. Lastly it comes with a 128 mb data card (proprietary). My data card has the equivalent of 256 paper maps on the card. This covers Land roads, routes & directions for 1/2 of Oregon, California and 1/2 of Nevada. And on the same card is all of the nav aid info you could ever want from the middle of Oregon all the way down past acupulco, MX. (Buy additional data cards to add more area) I have D/L'd The Entire North American Roads map, and West Coast Blue Carts Map in the computer. Instructions say you can upload to the same unit but, can only upload to one other device. And then the program wont allow it. I haven't tried it... but since it's in my computer, I must have D/L'd instructions as well. Downloading to device is password protected... or was the first time. Chart plotters do just that, allow you to plot routes, as you look at the map. You can select a destination by spelling it out, or by location (long & lat) or by going to it on the map and putting the curser on it and pushing a button. If it has 2 legs or 20 legs in the route you must plot each leg. By pushing the "Navigate" button, on the road it will tell you verbally how to get to a place or, you can see written instruction on the screen, or you watch the curser (Your car) move on the map as if by magic... even better, if you miss a turn, because you weren't paying attention to your unit... it will take up new directions for you as you screw it up. On the water... I can't tell you yet... I'll save that for someone else or when I can. Help any? I'm just learning all that mine can do. Pretty cool technology. Bill

HELP! I'm lost in the GPS world

I'm looking to buy a handheld GPS unit. This I think I know. I want a handheld so I can use it in the car and other boats. After that things start getting a little fuzzy. GPS unit vs. chartplotter? What do you get on these units? Do you just get a way to get a fix for a paper chart or is the chart itself in the GPS? For example I found this Garmin GPS 76 for $200. Sounds ok. They say its 1 megabyte of storage is preloaded with nautical navigation aids and is perfect for downloading detail from Garmin's line of MapSource CD-ROMs. The software, for example, the Hudson River, is another $150. Is this right? I invest $350 to replace $30 worth of paper charts? And everyone says you better have the paper ones as backup. If I'm correct here, do people share software or does eveyone invest in thier own copy? Now I've taken all the Power Squadron's navigational courses, but I've never liked the drudgery of paper chart navigation. So I thought that having a computer to do all this would be great, but not at the expense of my next boat. Please tell me a better way. Rick Langer M15 #337 Sialia

M17 for sale, Santa Rosa, CA

There is an M17 for sale at "Wind Toys", a boat yard in Santa Rosa. The phone number is: (707) 542-7245 . I didn't write down the hull number. It's a 3-birth model (with galley to port), with aluminum toe rail, and dark blue hull. I think it has lines led aft as well. It appears in pretty good shape. The gelcoat is oxidized, and the blue hull appears splotchy, but the boatyard worker (not the salesman) said the color would come right back with some buffing. The trailer is painted (not galvanized) and has some rust, but it doesn't appear ready to disintgrate. It includes an outboard motor. They're asking $5000. Wind Toys is open on the weekend and closed Mondays. Phil Sullivan

Friends, For what it is worth. My wife and I are in the market for a good clean used M-17 and have placed adds on the MSOG site and one other site expressing our interest. Earlier this week I received an email from a yahoo.com user responding to our inquiry. The user indicating they had an 87 M-17 for sale and requested personal information from me in order to calculate shipping cost. Without providing personal information I inquired further; requesting pictures, phone number, and location. Each reply from the user included a request for personal information. I did receive pictures but they were of a Marshall 18 Cat boat that had previously sold in Texas. In short, this response to my post was a scam. Not a very good one, but a scam none the less. I have contacted yahoo mail regarding, as both email addressed involved where Yahoo accounts. For what it is worth I wanted to pass this information along. Randy Graves M-15 #407

Hi Bill, I've had my nose in the fuel cell business many years ago, when I worked for United Aircraft. Fuel cells sound great, but, ............. They are very complicated devices Yes, they work on hydrogen and oxygen, but then you either have to have hydrogen filling stations, which means a conversion of the whole infrastructure we currently know, or....you have to create hydrogen by cracking gasoline. To do that you need a reformer. The reformer is then an on-board distillation plant. The problem becomes the old Stanley Steamer bugaboo - start up time. To start from cold you just can't jump into the car, twist the key and roll away. First you have to fire up the reformer, and once it reaches operating temperatures, only then does it start producing hydrogen which goes to the fuel cell. This time delay is a killer for what you are currently used to driving........ Connie
