Peter and all who replied to my boom length Query Thanks Peter, for the pics and to the rest of you for your thoughts and info. This will help. I can see now that my sail is indeed longer in relation to the boom than the stock setup. Don't know if the PO had a different sail made, or found a used one somewhere..... Whatever, doesn't matter. My sail is longer, but I think I can deal with it. This will help me get the outhaul and reef line(s) set up right. Thanks Guys. Yamaha 2.5HP on M15 w/fixed mount?

I'm considering the Honda 2HP or the Yamaha 2.5HP motors to replace the electric troller on my M15. It has the fixed engine mount and I'm therefore leaning toward the long-shaft Honda, since Yamaha doesn't offer the 2.5 with a long shaft. Is there anyone with a fixed mount on their M15 who has experience with the Yamaha? Is there a cavitation problem in chop or when going forward to raise and lower sails? Hi George, To give you a better feel for the sailing conditions and what I found when I had the centerboard trunk leak............ This was the first major outing with our "new" M15 after I had bought it. (this was the first time I put it in the water) We had been crossing Lake Champlain - about 5 to 6 NM in each direction, (Essex, NY over to the Vermont side and back) plus just enjoying broad reaches back and forth on a most pleasant day. No waves; nothing over the bow; no lee rail buried; just very pleasant sailing in about 10 kts of wind. We did bounce through the occasional powerboat wake which resulted in wet feet as water came up the CB pennant slot, but absolutely no water on deck. When we got home to the marina, I went into the storage locker either looking for something or putting something away and found it had about 6 inches of water..............!? Looked into the other locker and found the same. Checked under the V berth and found more water. That was when the question arose: ......how did it get in there? ......where did it come from? ......and the search started. That was when we careened the boat and saw water pouring into the storage area on the port side high up at the aft end of the cabin liner. After I finished the repair, I drilled a 1/4" hole P/S in the cabin sole, on either side of the CB trunk so that I could put in the small tube from my little hand held PAR pump to remove water that remained between the hull and the cabin liner; ........and as a check that the boat was really dry, and I had fixed the leak. Later what I discovered is that boat wakes can cause spurting in the CB pennant slot; and even gentle waves are enough to cause the pennant slot to burble and spit back at you: i.e., water is always all the way to the top in the back corner of the slot as you sail, - and that was exactly the location of the gap that caused the leak. So leak quantity became a function of sailing time and speed: higher speed = more water in boat. I stopped the spitting and burbling by making a teak block that fits over the CB pennant, and that sits in the CB pennant hole. There is clearance enough so that rain water in the cockpit (at the marina) can drain out, but the plug is very effective at stopping the spurting and the wet feet that you can get if it is not controlled. Hi George, Random thoughts on your water problem: The V berth area is not sealed off from the storage areas under the berths: i.e., water in the V berth area can get into the port storage area if you are slogging to windward on a starboard tack. So if there are leaks at the bow area, and water gets into the V berth area, it will find it's way aft - either port or starboard. Look in there with a flashlight, and you'll see what I am talking about. Do you have a NICRO vent on the foredeck? If you do, then if water got in via the vent, then the mattress area under the vent should be wet. If water came in via the windows, then the edge of the mattress under the window should be wet, or damp. Is any area up forward, or in the cabin damp or wet? If mattresses upper surfaces and edges are dry, then water might be coming in via the centerboard slot, which is a problem I had. What I found after sailing on Lake Champlain for several hours was water in both the port and starboard storage areas in the cabin, plus water in the V berth area. To locate where the water came from, we careened the boat at the dock, with my wife pulling on the shroud, and I sudden saw water spurting into the port cabin locker high up on the aft end of the locker. That explained how the water reached the port locker in the cabin, but not how it got there. That became the next step in the process. Somewhere in the archives is my longwinded description of what I did and what I found. What I found was an area at the aft end of the centerboard pennant slot where the water got into the boat, and flowed inside the cabin liner (with the cabin sole / portapottie area / berths) till it found an outlet in the port storage locker, which is what I discovered. We didn't try careening it the other way to check on the starboard side. I figured, I now knew I had a centerboard pennant slot leak: next step, find it and fix it. Back at home I emptied out the boat, then filled the inside of the boat with water - higher than the CB slot opening - then put in some special hatch boards I built out of Styrofoam, and using my shop vac, I pressurized the inside of the hull. Then I waited to see where the water would show up................ (Jerry's recommendation was to lie under the boat, beer in hand, and see where it dripped. After some time (2 beers later) it started dripping at the aft end of the CB slot. Next question was, ...... where did it come from? To be able to examine the aft end of the CB pennant slot, I had to do a bit of cutting to gain access to the area, ........and there it was! My leak, ..... plain as day! One small area at the cockpit sole, with water merrily pouring out of it! The rest was simple, though it required working upside down and backwards............. to reach the area. I ground out the area to clean it up; and then when it was thoroughly dry again, I put in some epoxy with filler to seal the area. Boat has been bone dry ever since. I note that your hull number is #385. Mine is #400. Maybe the same problem? Connie M15 #400

Sailed out to South Bass Island over the weekend...it was a pretty light air day Saturday, flying the 155% on a beam reach for most of the way. Passed a mid-eighties model Pearson 28 towing a dinghy on the way. And not just passed her, but trounced her. She was also flying a big genny and fully battened main; nice looking sails, much nicer/newer than poor Busca's rags but Busca just knocked the socks off of her on plain straight boat speed. Surely must've been the dinghy. hehehe Tod
