Big water in the M23

I am obviously being hit with a case of spring sailing insanity. I need to go on a trip with my 23, yes NEED. My concerns are the retractable keel, should I find a way to be able to lock it in the down position? Do I go through the Great Lakes and down the coast or trailer it to Florida and hit the Carib? Just sitting here dreaming.......comments welcome Theo M23 "Port Reduction"

You didn't, by any chance, have a tailwind, did you? I know that the idea of towing a Monty with a "large" SUV seems somewhat blasphemus, but I have to tell you all that I borrowed my friend's 2004 Yukon to tow my precision 21 up to the sound the other day. Unfortunately I didn't measure the gas mileage on the way up but on the way back I got 21 mpg over a 300 mile trip on I-5...and I thought large SUV's were the root of all evil. After reading the mileages that people are getting on their micro suv's I'm not so sure that GM is doing such a bad job afterall...btw advertised HP on this Yukon is 295hp!!! WOW!!

Hi Connie, I enjoy your recollections immensely. To interject a thought here, one of the boat magazines had an article recently about a float-on, float-off boat transport service. This service has several semi-submersible ships. The ballast tanks are flooded to bring boats on board. Divers weld supports to the deck, the ballast tanks are emptied, and then your and your boat are transported to a distant shore. While in transit you live onboard your boat which is connected to the ship’s generator. You may take your meals in the ship’s mess. You have the opportunity to scrape the bottom or do other work while underway. No separation anxieties. No navigation worries. No midnight watches. I intend to lift our M17 using a method similar to Larry's, Gilbert. Jerry's used the alum. toe rail to move M17s around forever (I shouldn't have to say the teak rails won't serve this purpose, right?). I plan to spread the load out to at least 6 points, maybe 8, and keep the lifting bridle angles as straight as possible (not sure how to say this...the point is to have the straps or cables or chains or whatever hang straight down to the connection at the toe rail, thus lessening the strain on the strap and the rail). I'll probably rig a pair of backup straps under the hull for good measure, and then block the boat up after I've dropped the cb. I might add I will administer one or two stiff shots of George Dickel to myself prior to performing this operation. If I wasn't going to refinish the bottom however, I wouldn't go through this pain. There are numerous places with lifts sufficient to get a 1500 pound boat off a trailer to gain access to the cb. Going back a few years, 1970 or so, there was a solid plastic ( but hollow) dinghy made of rotational molded poly-propylene that looked like a miniature inflatable rubber dinghy, what was its name and where to find them if they are still being made?

His Scott, If you want to sail the Flicka to Europe, you first have to get it to the East coast, or into the Atlantic. You can do that three ways: Sail it yourself - which takes lot's of time Ship it by truck; which means recommissioning it on the East coast, then sailing to Europe Or, put in container in Seattle, and ship to Europe: one decommissioning; one recommissioning. The problem here will be to have a destination address (a Dutch shipyard) that can extract the Flicka from the container; help you step the mast; and put it back in the water. Then you would be off on your adventures............. sailing amongst the tulip fields; eating smoked eel from street vendor pushcarts; enjoying Heineken or Amstel beer direct from the tap and not from a bottle; and Bokma, the sailor's gin. Bokma is old Genevre (gin); comes in a squat square bottle that doesn't tip over at any reasonable angle of heel; and stows well ...........obviously a "must have" aboard a sailing vessel. When I lost my job in Munich in August '74, I wanted to sail the Tripp-Lentsch back to the USA. The children were the right age: they did excellently in school so loosing a school year wouldn't have been a problem. I wanted to have the boat trucked to Italy, and then we would have been able to cruise the remainder of the southern end of the Yugoslavian coast, that we hadn't seen before, then on to the Greek islands, exiting the Med by late October, while sailing is still reasonably pleasant. You sail to the Canary Islands, and wait there till the winter trade winds are established - about early December - and then use them to slide across to Barbados, arriving there about the end of December. You are forced to sit in the sun, and enjoy a tropical paradise, because - as a prudent sailor - you certainly don't want to be sailing for Connecticut in February! You have to wait till about mid May to arrive there. But, those nice plans were scrapped when I got a new job, and my new employer wanted me in Connecticut ASAP. So, I had a Dutch company build a cradle for the T-L, and drive from Rotterdam to the Chiemsee (between Munich and Salzburg) to pick up the boat. They put it on a Finnish cargo ship as deck cargo, and I picked it up about two weeks later at the container terminal in New Jersey; cleared customs; and then it was trucked to Noank, CT where it was covered for the winter, while we looked for a house and got settled in the new surroundings. Dreaming is fun, eh? Connie

Hi Steve, Yes I've seen the float on; float off boat transport system, and forgot to mention it. I guess the question is; what does that cost? (Of course, a Flica can fit in any corner between the Big Boys that are paying most of the freight) Connie

I thought maybe some of the new owners, new to trailering might find it of some use. I print it on 11 x 14, cut it and laminated it so I could carry it with me and not worry about getting it wet.
