Theo, What part of the Pacific Northwest are you talking about? Our San Juan Rendezvous will be kicking off shortly after your dates on June 4th at Annacortes, Wash. There will be M15's, M17's and M23's there. I'm sure you could get a sail on board any one of them in exchange for cooking. Craig, "Small" boat owners have been trying to solve the dinghy problem since Day 1. Doug's folding dinghy is one example. Then there is the dinghy that is built in two parts and nests; so that it fits on board. Or the dinghy built with a slot at the bow to fit around the mast; Each is an attempt at solving the problem and none are ideal. You can only come up with a solution that is satisfactory for you; for your cruising area; for the distances you travel; for the weather you will encounter; and what you are willing to live with............ When Bruce Bingham and Kathy Burke got their Flicka, he had also designed the Trinka dinghy and that became their always towed behind, solution. He wrote several articles about improvements to dinghies: self bailing devices; rugged towing attach points; floor boards; dinghy equipment (anchor + rode; bailer; spare oar lock; spare oar) and their stowage; and proper towing techniques in the open ocean. So they were resigned to always tow their Trinka dinghy and made the necessary improvements to do this successfully. Last year Robb White wrote a definitive treatise on dinghies in Messing About In Boats. Those articles should be made into a small book for everyone to appreciate. He covered each type of dinghy; their strengths and weaknesses; what you really need, and why; oars; sails; outboards; the dinghy as your life boat, and what is required of a life boat and what equipment it should have. I just wish I had been able to read that 40 years ago, I wouldn't have had to reinvent the wheel, and go through the same learning process that he did. Oh, just in case any of you are towing a dinghy that has a centerboard trunk please make sure that when you tow, that the centerboard trunk is closed and firmly sealed. You will be amazed at how much water can squirt out of an open centerboard trunk; and then you will discover what a wonderful sea anchor a filled dinghy can be. Been there: done that! Connie

Sorry Steve, MAIB doesn't put the date on the pages of their issues so I can't help you. If I remember correctly it was at least a three or four part article, and he considered every dinghy possibility and gave you the good points and the bad points. Small vs. large: hard dinghies or inflatable: rowing characteristics; sailing possibilities; carrying capacity; with outboard or without - he favors, without. One less problem to worry about. I wrote Robb and told him to publish it as a book; his insights and experience were worth their weight in gold. If you write to him he might make a copy of his manuscript and mail it to you, or write Bob Hicks and see if he has those back issues available. Connie

The most lamentable mistake I made on the Piragua was not insuring that the sides are dimensioned exactly the same. I didn't, which produced a slight twist to the stern, on the order of 1/8". I doubt it affects the boat at all, but it drives me crazy every time I see it! Alignment is everything. Steve

Hi Steve, No I have never made the sail rig for the NYMPH. It might be fun to try, but since I have the "big" M15 to use when the wind blows, the NYMPH is primarily used as a rowing machine when there is no wind...... With the longitudinal thwart - which is nice since you can change your rowing position by just sliding a bit fore or aft - it doesn't leave much space for sailing. The Bolger designed Car Topper I built had a flat bottom, so you could sit there, and lean against the sides of the boat - a very nice arrangement. For rowing you had a little box that you sat on - and which also could be moved to suit your rowing position. When sailing, I put the box up forward, and had a nice open space for sitting, with no encumbrances. ..............and Steve, the next time I build a stitch and glue boat, I'll use copper wire to hold everything in place and to insure that the alignment is proper. There was also an article in a recent MAIB about a trimaran conversion of a Bolger Windsprint, a 100 lb, 16' lug rigged double ender with 113 sf of sail (gives new meaning to the reef early, reef often mantra, eh?) It's very tempting to build, what with a family of four, lots of water nearby for daysails, and with all that canvas it ought to be fast! I could build amas for it and install tramps over the akas, creating a huge sprawling platform that still wouldn't weigh more than 250 lbs. Oh well, we shall see. Steve
