North Channel Cruise

I'm planning on a two week North Channel Cruise in mid June. I'll probably drive from Ohio to Tobermory, take the Chi-Cheemaun ferry over to South Baymouth (Manitoulin Island), and then drive to Little Current (Manitoulin Island) on Saturday June 5th. I might end up taking the ferry on the morning of the 6th depending on how late I hit the road. At the present time I'm thinking of making a general counter clockwise spin around the North Channel, launching at Spider Bay Marina in Little Current and going north and then west to the Bustard Islands and west and then crossing south to the west end of Manitoulin and returning east again. Of course, all plans are subject to the weather and whims of the person at the helm! Mid June will probably be a bit ahead of the crowd and still kinda nippy. His Scott, My memory was correct. The Canal du Midi connects at Toulouse with the canal lateral a la Garonne and with the river Garonne. It runs in an easterly direction and falls into l'Etang de Thau at the Mediterranean The Canal du Midi has a length of 240 kilometers between Toulouse and l'Etang de Thau. There are 101 locks; 24 fall towards Toulouse and 77 towards l'Etang de Thau. Many of them are "staircase" or "riser" locks which perhaps accounts for the rather long time required to make the passage. It may be comforting to know that the flight of four locks at Castelnaudry and the flight of seven locks at Fonserannes are worked electrically. All locks have a width of 5 m 50 and a length of each chamber is 30 m 00 There are many fixed bridges, most near the locks. All have a headroom of 3 m 50 at the centerline, but this may fall way rapidly according to the arch of the structure. All traffic using the canal is self-propelled; the tow path has fallen into disuse and is no longer practicable. ~~~~~~~~~~ On the canal des Ardennes from the summit descending down into a long broad valley, we went through 32 hand operated locks in one day: 06:30 to 18:40 = 42 kilometers. The canal was opened for traffic in 1833! ~~~~~~~~~~ >From Rotterdam we went to Papendrecht; Gorinchem; Helmond; to Maasbracht. Then up the Maas river through Belgium to Givet, which is the border between France and Belgium. Then you get into the French canal system, and our first canal tunnel - 565 meter long. Also, I will be cooking for a client on his 60' Power :( catamaran April 29-May 29th, I would like to know who is in that area with a 17 and/or 23 and should I have free time, would be up for a sail in exchange for gourmet food! It is a charming boat, a good alternative to the gorgeous, capable, very expensive Melonseed. However, competition for the Next Boat awards got settled last night: I'm going to build Milkweed, a new design. I was noodling over the design of a one sheet (as in one plywood sheet) boat yesterday afternoon when in a fit of procrastination I decided to make a model. My vocation is design, so printing out a scale model of the mould and chine layout was easy. The finished model is a 7' 4" dory/sharpie/canoe/whatchyoumakallit with a 2' 6" beam. I imagine it will be cranky with me in it, since my weight will put it below recommended sharpie waterlines, but my youngest daughter is entranced, and it should float her very well. I have a nice piece of luan nailed to the back of my office, just waiting to be used. I think I'll try building it with strictly hardware store stuff. Wish me luck! Steve

That stern rail you have pictured seems to be the same shape and size of the one listed in the DEFENDER marine supplies, is that where you got it. How in the world did you get the bolts in the two stern stanchions, that is at the stern, it would. take a very small person to squeeze back under there.

Larry, Thanks for the info. I was looking for a sail on the front end of my trip as it ends in Juneau, Alaska on the 29th of May, and I need to get back to Minnesota for cooking gigs and my M23. I will also be in that area mid August through Mid September. Perhaps that would be a better time?? Chef Theo

I agree that hard dinghies are far better for rowing and towing, but I will continue to use an inflatable on both the M15 and the Flicka in spite of this. Some of my reasons for this compromise are: 1) I have crossed/will continue to cross open bodies of water where towing would not be advisable (and thus I would have no alternative but to cut a hard dinghy loose if conditions deteriorated). 2) I have cruised/will cruise in areas where a 20' tide range often requires carrying the dinghy up or down long shallow sloping shores. 3) I like not having to worry about the dinghy banging against the hull of the mothership. The inflatable is, for all purposes, one big fender! 4) I trailer long distances, and with a lot of gear, and it just isn't practical to transport a hard dinghy as well. Having had both hard and inflatables, I am fully aware of what I am trading away. On occasion, I find myself in envy of the grace and ease of a passing hard dinghy such as a Fatty Knees, Cherub, Trinka, etc., but have made peace with my present setup. Ditto your hero list!
