Yes, the geometry of NOT moving the lowers closer together makes a lot of sense. The uppers are the pair mounted to a bulkhead, which leaves the option either of cutting a slot in the bulkhead against the hull to allow room for the new cp (and its bolts) or moving it forward/back a couple of inches. The mast is (I think) about 32 ft long, plus a foot or two to the top of the cabin. So the difference would be a couple of inches (if that much, assuming the new cp lay right up against the bulkhead) in 30-something feet. And, of course, it will be the backing plate that butts up against the bulkhead because the cp will be outside. On reflection, it would be best to clear the whole mess of glass cocoon and rotten wood out from where the lowers are mounted, which would leave a flattish inside to the hull to mount a backing plate to. Sorry if this seems a little dense -- it seems as if this task might be the most difficult so far. And why, oh why, didn't I hold out for an M-23? >Cheap it isn't, a GREAT tool it is On the other hand, clearing the cabinetry out for access to these areas might be a little easier than I'd feared -- Leif Eriksson's praise for the Fein Multimaster Magic Tool leaves me hopeful. Thanks to all for welcoming me to the group. I have moved down from a 26 footer to the M-15. I have had a couple P-15s but decided this time on the Montgomery after lurking on this site and seeing all the positive feedback about their superiority. Now all I need is a slightly warmer day to give her a go. It is not expected to get over 30 degrees here today in Cape Cod.

New Boat on Order

I visited the Montgomery factory today and placed an order for a new M-15 (628) with Bob. I ordered a dark blue hull with white topside and opening portlights. Bob expects to deliver the boat in mid-January or so. My wife, kiddies, and I can't wait. Aside, I hadn't seen an M-17 before; it's a big, comfortable boat, and what a great cockpit it's got. I saw in today's Digest that folks recommend a full batten and loose foot on the M-15 main. I'll ask Bob if I can get those on my main. Anything else that I should request, now? The blocks of foam floatation under the cockpit aren't the prettiest, and look like they'll get beat up over time. Do folks replace them with foam "pool noodles" or something similar or do without? Thanks for your help! Sincerely, John

Chain plates

Once again I'm hoping to benefit from the knowledge that this group continually shows in abundance. Chain plates. Dolphin (My Vancouver 25) is a great boat, but among her weaknesses is a truly lousy arrangement for the chain plates. One pair is bolted to a bulkhead, but the other two are bolted to pieces of wood that were glassed to the side of the hull. The unpleasant surprise that ended my sailing season was finding two of the plates had lifted, and after burrowing into things I found that they're bolted not so much to wood as to the mushy remnants of wood. The access to these things is horrible, and water had rotted the anchor points. I had a well-regarded rigger (Alpha Rigging in Deale) look at it, and he referred me to the woodwork/structural guy. Both of them were astonished at how inaccessible these things are -- the boat was built in Taiwan, and the cabinet work completely covers the chain plate mounts. So what to do? The old stuff has to be cut away and the woodwork guy told me about the Fein Multimaster tool, which he says will cut down into the glass and old wood when I have access from only one side, and also allow me to cut away cabinet work in as tidy a way as possible. I'm going for functional rather than highly finished here, so there will only be the minimum of restoration of the woodwork (I want to be able to see these things in future). It looks as if the best/easiest option is to replace the current internal plates with external chain plates. Since I'm planning on replacing the standing rigging (it's more than 20 years old) it isn't a problem if they're a little higher. Things that I'm wondering about include: Is the Fein tool really going to allow me to cut away wood and fiberglass, given that the access is very poor (the tool is rather expensive and I haven't found one for rent). How important is it that the new chain plates be in the same fore/aft position as the old ones? Am I missing something? Apologies for trying to start something that isn't really very Montgomery-oriented, but the group was unbelievably helpful when I replaced the engine beds, and... Giles Morris

Bob gets a great discount on roller furlers, and tanbark sails are always nice for cutting down glare. I also like the aft pulpit Bob has for the M-15. The improvement in performance you mention might simply have come about because the sail was new and not blown out---not because it was loose footed. The loose footed mainsail is a little quicker to strike into its bag if you must dismantle the whole rig at the end of the day. Cheers, John

John, Congrats on your new boat. In regards to the foam, ours is over 20 yrs. old and still in good shape. It's also out of sight and when you start loading the boat with gear you probably won't notice them one way or the other. Regards, Randy W.
