Whoa, there's a name from the past eh Jerry? Would there have been Reggie Armstrong sails as original equipment on a 75 M17? Not that I've ever heard of. Doesn't sound like a real good idea. It'd be a real chore to get out of there if you wanted to run wires up to the masthead, etc. I thought I should have floatation when I was new to the boat, so I filled it with those styrofoam shipping peanuts, which also quiets the wire slap in the mast, and plugged the ends with a chunk of foam from one of the swim noodles the kids play with at the pools. I don't think I would worry about it now, unless the wire slap was annoying. Thanks Ron. Perhaps the builder could enlighten us further on this subject... The reason I ask is probably obvious by maybe not true--those with early models with lots of uncored surface have to worry less about how hardware is mounted. True or false? Based on the observation that a filled milk jug will sink, at least in fresh water, I assume that the density of HDPE is higher than that of water. If you're considering plastic CBs, why not make a simple fiberglass board? It's bound to be much, much stiffer, and wouldn't be hard to make if the goal was to have a flat, maintenance free board. Yes! Tullamore, my 1976 M17, has Armstrong sails. I still use the main, with good results, and only quit using the jib when I had a 150 genoa made for the new roller furling. Larry Y. Stuck center board

-- What's the down side of just sailing without lowering the board besides not being able to point as close to the wind or being pushed sideways more on a reach. If you're not racing what really makes the difference. Is it easier to get knocked down? How close can you point with the board up? Jerry M17 333

Trip Update

After a great, if short time with Toby and eating enough lobsters to make my blood more like sludge, it's back to sailing. We did get to sail on a 100 year old Friendship sloop while Toby was here. It was a great sail in a steady and suprisingly fast boat and it is easy to see why they were very popular working boats before the age of motors. The current plan for Miss T is to sail Southwest and Northeast Harbors, Sommes sound, and up to Bar Harbor if the weather cooperates, and keeping a close ear to the weather reports about the Isabel. Then on to Mystic, CN.

Read some recent post about problems with water in the cockpit and cabin. Saw a product at a home show last week that looks like it would work great in boats. It will not solve the water problem, but it will keep your feet dry. Hard to describe, but it is plastic squares,12"x12" on raised feet, total about 1/2" thick. Wood slats about 2 1/2" x 12" snap Into the top of them, total deck is about 3/4" thick.There is about 1/8" between the slats so water can drain, and with the raised feet water can flow to the cockpit drain.
