Steve, There are several posts about Hondas oil level increasing on the iboats.com web site. Most are from a faulty fuel pump and one was from a stuck open thermostat. Bill

Honda Maintenance Issue

Greets, This is off topic a bit, so feel free to answer offline. I just discovered water in the oil on my Honda 8. It is used as a kicker on my Catalina and on my fishing boat. Has anyone on the list encountered this problem? If so, what was the cause/cure...? I suspect that I am in store for a new gasket somewhere. Thanks in advance... Steve M15-159 "Sojornen"

Wet core

I have an area on the cabin top of my M15 about the size of a silver dollar that has a wet core. There was a fitting screwed on to the cabin top, and I removed it and drilled out the hole, and wet wood came out. I drilled about a half-inch hole, and picked out all that I could get to. Anoyther hole above and one below were dry. I have left these holes open for about three weeks now, in the hot sun (about 95 degrees). Is this enough to sufficiently dry it out? Any ideas on what I might do? I have removed all of the fittings, drilled out the holes and filled with epoxy, then redrilled and replaced each fitting. I only found the one spot that was wet. Trip Update

Well, we finally made it back to the east coast. Drove into Portland, Maine this evening, and tomorrow the original Miss T flys in for a week of sightseeing and lobster eating. The trip across the northern part of the US was a deja vu experience since I lived in Montana for 20 years and got started in sailing while I was there. Miss T sailed for a few days on Canyon Ferry reservoir near Helena Montana, which was her "home" water for 4 years back in the late 1980s. We also sailed at the Apostle Islands near Bayfield, Wisconsin. This is the first time I sailed Miss T there, but the original Miss T and I chartered there in 1989. A week sailing there wasn't near enough time to see it all, so that is one of the places I plan to return to sometime soon. Due to time constraints, I had to skip the North Shore area of Lake Huron, but I did stop and take a look as I travelled across southern Canada. It is also on my "must do" list. Old Blue developed rear axel problems while in Ontario, but is running great now. The plan now is to sail some in Maine, then trailer to Mystic CN are and sail for a few days. Hi Jane & Tom, A compass doesn't have to be "spun". What you are referring to is swinging a compass: i.e., making sure that it is adjusted correctly and that North is 0, South is 180 degrees, and East / West are 90 and 270 degrees, so that when you are sailing a course, you are not off by 5 or 10 degrees due to compass error. To do this - and you can find detailed descriptions of the procedure in almost any good sailing book - you swing the boat from heading to heading, pointing the bow at something that is a known North point; putting the stern to that point then gives you South: noting the headings; and then making the appropriate adjustments with the N/S or E/W adjusters - and use a BRASS screwdriver, otherwise if you use a steel screwdriver you are not getting correct readings.......... I don't like to replace stuff that's repairable and was all fired up to repair it, but by the time I'd had a look at what a 20 year old compass looked like (you wouldn't _believe_ how much oily goop it can drip all over everywhere) a new one looked like a really good deal. Vince, Thanks for the suggestions. I went with the winch upgrade and 13inch wheels. The rope winch was listed at #900 and the web at #1400; I like the extra strength, just in case.
