Rich, You know sailors are never satisfied with the status quo. I want the best of all worlds. I want the long tiller for single handed sailing, so I can sit forward in the cockpit; but I want the flexibility of having the shorter tiller if I sail with the grandchildren, and more people are in the cockpit. But I am still mulling over a means of raising the tiller to a vertical position to clear the whole cockpit, for lunching; happy hour; or to be able to freely move about. However, I am not about to give up the nice "raise and lower the rudder blade" capability using the tiller. That's the rub. How to combine a tiller that can be raised, but in the down position is locked and which doesn't add any slop to the tiller. I am considering a hinge as a possible solution with a barrel bolt to lock it in the operating position. When I want the tiller out of the way, slide the barrel bolt to the "open" position, raise the tiller and you have the best of both worlds: a rigid tiller for sailing and for controlling the rudder's up's and down's; and a bendable tiller for clearing the cockpit.............. It's still a thought process: nothing has been cut or modified - yet! Connie

Pre 1987 M17 Owners I understand that pre 87 boats had a cast iron Center Board and iron shot ballast. I would be interested in hearing from existing owners about any problems they have encountered due to iron with the potential for rusting and causing binding problems. The 17's I have located are both fresh water boats an 82 and a 76 Thank you for the prior response on 15 Vs 17 George Boatless We cannot direct the wind, but we can adjust our sails.

Suffice it to say that we did a lot of motoring. During one trip in particular--the 70 mile round-trip from Egmont to Princess Louisa--we motored for all but 1.5 hours. I used these 10-hour motoring days to study the performance/economy of our then-new motor. Figure about 14.5 nautical miles/gallon (16.7 statute miles/gallon). Keep in mind that our Honda is the previous generation 2hp/4-stroke with the 'L' Head design. The subsequent (and current) Honda 2 is an overhead valve design, and a fuel efficiency increase of 10-15% is advertised. I ran a quick comparison to Doug's numbers: 75 minutes of motoring at an average of 3.9 knots (4.875 nautical miles/liter; 18.47 nautical miles/gallon). I am assuming the same size (1 liter/.264 gallon) tank. Doug, is your Honda one of the newer generation models? If so, I assume that the difference in results reflect some combination of a difference in loading/conditions and the increased efficiency of the newer models. Scott Grometer, M15 #478 'bebe'

For everyone's information, this is the reply I got back from Jeff, one of the techies at West System: Hello Tom, For the best results the epoxy should be applied to bare wood which would require the current finishes to be stripped off. The current finish will prevent the epoxy from bonding to the wood and will only adhere as well as the current finish. It is difficult to say how effective it will be when applied over the current finish. It also important to remember that the epoxy needs to have a UV protecting finish applied over it such as paint or varnish. If you have any other questions feel free to call or write. So are you guys running the J24 tiller through a planer? As I recall, the J24 tiller is wider than my M15 tiller.
