p.s., I should add that the Com-Pac Sun Cat is a VERY impressive little boat and seems like it would be a wonderful pocket-cruiser. It will not compare performance-wise with the M15, but it's not meant to. The Sun Cat is very cleverly designed for ease of launch, with thoughtful cruising accomodations. It's also very pretty. The Montgomery 15' has sailed from California to Hawaii. The Com-Pac 16' is a cute little boat for puttering around on your local inland lake. The Montgomery 15' will easily outrun a Com-Pac 16' and will be seakindlier in all conditions. I ruled out the Com-Pac 16' when I saw its low-slung cockpit benches: I knew sailing one would always feel like sqatting in a dinghy. I understand the Com-Pacs are well built and are aesthetically very charming. I've never heard of the Com-Pac 18': Are you sure you aren't referring to the new 20' Horizon Cat, big sister to the Sun Cat? There is a Com-Pac 19', also no longer in production. The Com-Pac 19' is much more boat than the Com-Pac 16': The difference between dinghy and yacht. I believe used 19's in good condition are plentiful, too, but they're heavily ballasted boats that are challenging to tow and launch. The M17 would be a great choice. I assume you've ruled out the Potters, the Precisions and the Stuart 19', if the M's and Com-Pacs are on your short list. I think the Potters, Precisions and Stuart are fine boats, too. Good luck with your choice. I'm sure you could squeeze plenty of fun out of the Com-Pac 16CB, for less money than you'd spend on a used Montgomery 15'. But since you're a former big-boat sailor, you probably have the sailing experience to appreciate the M15's superior performance and would also value the roominess of the M15. And the M15 has a wonderful big v-berth, which sits nice and high so you don't have to crouch getting in and out, with no compression post to force contortions on entry and exit. On the subject of M15 knockdowns, I'm thinking seriously of taking the M15 out this spring and deliberately pushing her to the point of a flat-out knockdown. First of all, I'd like to see just what it would take to have that happen, to find out how far she can be pushed. Also, I'd like to try to see how far over she can go and still right herself. Finally, I just want the practice in righting her, if necessary -- I'd rather learn that skill on a nice day, a hundred yards from shore than in the middle of a storm with no land in sight. Any comments? Port of Redwood City

Dick: If I recall correctly, your experience with your 23 was at Redwood City. When sailing "Really" and as I return from the Bay entering Redwood Creek I am occassionally caught off guard by severe gusts. I always keep one hand on the mainsheet for such events. The water is flat, land is close by and you're finally out of the Bay chop but beware of what you can't see. What were the circumstances in your experience? Rich Cottrell M15.

Hi Doug, A sail stop is the word requested, but as others have mentioned the little devils have a nasty habit. They loosen themselves ever so slightly and then when you are not looking they jump out of the sail track, hit the cabin top, jump to the deck and then into the drink. As they disappear from view into the water, you will hear a faint derisive laugh, as the sail stop goes, gurgle, gurgle. The solution to this problem is to defeat the bastards. Jerry says: use duct tape Giles says: drill a hole through the sail track and insert a cotter pin My solution is to take a piece of bungee cord and tie it around the mast (two turns). It holds the sail slides in place: can be moved down to release the sail slides; and doesn't jump overboard at the first opportunity and then give me the Bronx Cheer. Costs almost nothing. Is replaceable when needed. Doesn't get lost. ...and is a nonmechanical solution to the problem. Connie M15 #400 LEPPO

I was knocked down to the extent that we took water in over the coaming last summer (I was a little distracted at the time and didn't notice what was going on mast-wise). I know I automatically released the main sheet and the boat rounded and popped up quickly and all but simultaneously. I have to say I can't think of a reason a buttoned up M15 will not self right, unless you've got a hefty passenger hanging out in the cockpit and the mainsheet is not released. Good idea. I'm sure the forum readers will be very interested in your experiments. I intend to do the same with our Potter 15 this year. You might consider testing the effect of running floatation up the mast as part of your experiment. Even ten pounds of floatation at the end of such a long lever arm should make an appreciable difference. All sail locker lids should be gasketed (use closed cell foam rubber strips) to prevent leakage. The sail locker lids must have some form of lock so that they can't open by themselves, as yours did. I use a tight fitting hasp. When I leave the boat at the marina I can lock the sail lockers; and when I am sailing, the hasps fit tightly enough so that they won't inadvertently open by themselves. If weather starts to gets rough, put in the hatch boards and close the companionway hatch. In the event of a knock down you would get some water in the cockpit, but that's all. The ultimate name of the game is keep the water out of the boat even in knock down conditions. i.e., button up the boat to keep water from getting inside.
