Doug, Thanks so much for sharing your experiences in the Marquesas. What a trip! Great sailing, and tons of wildlife. I wish I had time to do the same. I'm working on a cloning machine, but the infernal contraption won't behave. I figure I just need three more of me: One to sail, one to ride a bike, one to be a Dad/Husband, and, oh, what was that other thing? Oh yeah, one to work. hats, pants, bushing . . .

I'm on a quest for the perfect sailing hat: Wide, full 360-degree brim, neck and face protection. Water-repellant (doesn't have to be "water proof"). I'm picturing something like a boonie hat or an "outback" hat. I think waxed cotton duck is really cool. I'd prefer cotton, unless you know of a really stiff canvass-like nylon. Anybody have a favorite they'd like to talk about? If you could give me a brand and the name of a vendor, that would be great, too. I also want a pair of those drawstring pants that you always see people wearing in the Caribbean: Light cotton, roomy, with a drawstring. You always see people walking along the beach (legs rolled to the calf) in them in resort ads. Latitudes and Attitudes (magazine) sells them, in the perfect color (cream), too. But I don't want to pay for the giant Lats 'n Atts logo. I've never seen them in Eddie Bauer, Lands End, etc., which is where I had expected to find them. Basically, I want cool thin cotton that will protect my legs from the sun (I hate shorts) on a summer sail: I don't want modern synthetic high-tech racing gear. Does anyone know who might make an aluminum, stainless, or plastic bushing? I need a bushing, about 2 1/2" long, in aluminum, stainless, or a very tough plastic (Delrin?), for a 3/8" or 1/2" diameter pivot-pin. I absolutely cannot use a bronze (brass, copper) bushing. If you know of a manufacturer, do you know of a supplier? Thanks!!!!!

I waited until I finished the latest update so I could combine the messages into one. Just want to take a moment to thank everyone who has donated to the MSOG this year. I usually write individual e-mails to you, but I hope you don't mind if I do it through the listserver this year. Thank you very much for your support. Your names are listed on the MSOG at http://msog.org/donors.cfm, under "MSOG Site". Turns out there was no need to proceed to the personal hygeine auction. Oh well, maybe next year when I'll probably have more to offer. And some more news. Keith Diehl, being a step ahead of me as usual, unlocked the list archives on Thursday, the day before I wrote him asking about it. Consequently, I have just finished updating the archive searchable database on the MSOG through March 2003. Apparently a little glitch in my conversion program seems to leave out the last message of each month. Otherwise, I think it's complete. Two Questions . . .

1. Why the cabin-top winch on the M17 (port on mine, starboard on others)? If it's meant for the main halyard, I've never encountered the need. Or is it intended for a mast-raising system? 2. Does it make a difference whether I lead my CDI-furler control line port or starboard? If so, why? Okay, maybe that comes out as more like 4 questions. Thanks!!!

Hi Craig, On my M17, I have a locking plug/jack for the DC wiring to the mast and a separate one for the coax. Keep in mind with the VHF radio we are dealing with RF. A coax cable in good condition is necessary for proper reception and transmission, as well as keeping a proper SWR. (standing wave ratio). Almost time to sail in Minnesota. Bob, Cool boat! Sounds like she's going to be fast (I've heard that the Catalinas are good in that respect to start with). If I had the bucks and the tow vehicle, I wouldn't hesitate to buy Alina; she sounds cherry. As it is, I'm attempting to resurrect a Sunflower-yup, one of those styrofoam boats. My daughter and I took it out last week, and I was surprised at how easily it planes, even in its dented, dilapidated condition. Who knows how fast it'd be with a clean hull, foil shaped daggerboard and rudder, not to mention a shaped dacron sail! One thing's for sure: She'll be exceptionally fast at the ramp!
