Hi Jerry: Sorry your e-mail bounced, don't know why it did that - I am at the same address, must have been a gremlin in the wire. Any way thanks for the M17 line drawings, I got them today, & am going to start some drawings right away. I'll send you and any one who is intrested, some copies when I'm done. Had my M17 out Sat. about 10knt wind and it just romped along like the throughbred it is......... life is sweet. Happy sails Wayne

Transom tales

Well, I bought Fulton motor mount WM#380321, and a Garelick transom ladder WM#283770, and have begun the installation process. I chose the Fulton model without the torsion springs because of the weight difference - over 4#. The motor is light and my back is still strong (knock on wood). So that's 4# less hanging off the stern. It's hard to believe the 4# of spring is only $10 - maybe there is an error in weight in the catalogs. I figured I would try to install using the "fish the backing plate into place" method, and if I ran into trouble, cut a seat-top hatch for access. I started to unscrew the original fixed mount, and, of course, the nuts just turned with the screw. Not having a kid handy, I thought I would try transom diving one time. I had my wife stand by with the screwdriver while I squirmed under the port cockpit seat. Surprise! I was able to get in, hold the nuts while she loosened the bolts, and, bigger surprise, squirm back out again! I'm not large, at 5'6", 160. But it was easier than I thought. What worked for me was to begin feet first from the port bunk, but aim my feet to Starboard, just behind the bunks. After popping my head in, I was lying abeam, feet to starboard, head to port, just behind the bunks. Then I leaned head first under the port cockpit seat, and slithered in with little trouble. I used some old corrugated along the forward cockpit bracing to help me slide by. While measuring and fitting, I ran in to the same problem Connie had with the release lever on the mount hitting the transom flare. I cut a piece of 5/8" plywood to fit between the motor mount and the transom, effectively moving the mount 5/8" farther astern, and think this will give me just enough room. Since there is plywood glassed into the area where the original mount was located, I don't plan to use a backing plate, just fender washers. I have made a 5/8" backing plate for the ladder, on the starboard side. I will still use stainless T-nuts for the ladder. When I was removing the motor mount I realized how little room there is between the outer transom and the hull liner. T-Nuts will make it easier, but at least I don't have to fish the rig in there now! I still have to epoxy the plywood pieces and install the equipment, but I have the fitting and measuring done. That probably took as much time as epoxying and mounting will. Can't be too careful. I don't want the rudder hitting either piece of hardware. Speaking of the rudder, I disassembled it for it's second varnishing since I bought Storm Petrel in 1998. The pivot hole on one of the cheek plates is elongated, vertically, to almost twice the size it should be. Has anyone else seen that? I think I will just reassemble it as is and next winter have my machinist brother cut new aluminum (or stainless?) cheek plates for both sides. I will keep you posted. Hi Bill, Now you come up with a solution to the lift mount handle problem. Where were you with your ideas when I needed you? My solution was to cut down the handle a bit, plus very carefully making space for it in the lip on the transom. Of course moving the whole mount aft by a tad solves the problem the easy way............. Sheesh, you get too soon old and too late smart! On the other hand, I like my extra rectangular sail locker hatch aft of the regular one. Instead of having the Black Hole of Calcutta down there, I now have two access ports - the sail locker lid itself, plus the second one, which makes life very easy for getting at the cleaning bucket / sponges / cleaning materials / etc. without having to remove everything that previously was in the way; ..........and you can see what's there! I can't envision a 4 lb difference between the lift mount with springs and the one without springs. I'll bet they are exactly the same components, except mine has the two stainless springs. If they weight a half pound together that would be a lot. Bill, when I started my installation, I made a mockup of the outboard, from the clamp down, out of some scrap 1/4 inch lauan I had in the shop. Holding that up to determine the location of the lift mount is a lot easier than trying to hold the actual motor there while you try and draw some pencil lines. I have had my rudder apart several times: No elongation in the holes noted. Connie

Doug saw more animals than I did, but we did both see a manatee. We were sitting at a covered bar/restaurant at the City Marina (I think the name was Captain Run Aground) getting out of the hot sun and eating lunch when a manatee started to swim slowly by. It was huge, maybe 18 to 20 feet long, gray with a lot of growth on its back and propeller scars too. It swam very slowly, when one guy from the bar said it was after fresh water. He got a hose out and turned the water on, splashing it on the surface. Hearing the sound of the water splashing, the manatee turned around and raced to the sound (OK, "raced" for a manatee, maybe 3 mph). When it got there it took the hose in its front fins, stuffed it in its whiskered mouth and slowly sank to the bottom, drinking the fresh water. The guy said it would sometimes drink as much as 100 gallons, then would rest on the bottom for awhile and then come to the surface to drink a few gallons more. I'm not sure I believe him about the 100 gallons, but it was definitely looking for it that day. Snorkeling off Loggerhead key, a 15-20 inch barracuda swam within a few feet of me in incredibly clear water. There were also some sort of "jack" fish swimming by and later I was surrounded by thousands of bright blue - almost neon blue - fish, each about a half inch long. There were green turtle off the Marquesas islands, lots of frigate birds everywhere, and gulls galore. Migrating birds included a few purple martins, and a lot of small, fast, miserable, non-descript brown sparrows. There was also the only significant nesting colony of sooty terns in the US on Bush Key in the Dry Tortugas. The birds NEVER stopped squalking, day or night, and really went crazy if a frigate bird flew over the colony. I anchored fairly close to the colony but slept well despite the noise.
