Dale and Gloria, Welcome to the list. You live in a great sailing location. I trailered Miss T (M17 # 372) there this past June for 10 days sailing north out of San Carlos. While it was very HOT, there was almost no humidity and there were always good mid-day sailing winds. I wish I had known you were there, we could have gone sailing together. Oh well, San Carlos is on my list of "go back to" places so we may be able to sail the next time. Fair Winds John Edwards

Hi MC Many years ago I had a 25 foot Norwegian double ended fishing boat type built in Norway. We took delivery in Rotterdam, Netherlands, and then went from Rotterdam via inland waterways to Belgium, France and finally to the Seine in Paris, where we lived at that time. (140 locks almost all hand operated!) The boat had a SABB 10 HP single cylinder diesel with a variable pitch prop. A variable pitch prop is HEAVEN! It is total control under all situations. Going up the Meuse River in Belgium, we'd have to wait for a lock to open. You just throttle back to idle; pflumpf - pflumpf - pflumpf goes the diesel, and you hold your position in the river current by gently giving it a bit of forward pitch or, if moving to much, just go back to flat pitch, .........and wait a bit. I have been mourning for my variable pitch prop ever since..................... But, how do you plan to mount the engine and get the shaft out with the centerboard trunk in the way? Connie

I've mentioned this in the past, but since we're on the subject of Honda 2s, the air vent will clog up sometimes too (especially if you keep your boat in the water for extended periods with motor attached), resulting in the engine starving out for lack of fuel. While we're on the subject of Honda gas caps... It's not _absolutely_ certain, but I'm as convinced as I can be about this: One night, I was coming back to Dolphin in Moby Dink (my deflatable) when Mr. Honda (2HP) ran out of fuel. No big deal because I always have the oars, back to the boat and sit down in the cabin. Then there was a roaring sound, coming closer, and closer, and closer... Those of you who are familiar with St. Leonard's Creek on the Patuxent know that it is a well-sheltered anchorage -- quiet and peaceful. Well, that storm hit so hard that I was heeling over, stuff was clattering to the floor and I was convinced the anchor would drag (it didn't, but was a %$#@! to get up the next morning!). That was the last time I used Mr Honda that trip, and that season. Next time I came to use it, dead as a doornail! When I pulled it apart I found that the inside of the carb was severely corroded. I think that the wind-blown rain had entered the tank because the vent wasn't closed -- I had forgotten to close the vent and turn off the fuel because it had been run dry -- and run down to the carb. to anyone who knows diesel, how close is diesel fuel , type used in cars and boats, to kerosene fuel used in lamps and small heaters. I found a tiny three hp diesel and considering just what it will take to install and get fuel, that includes getting fuel if no diesel is available to some dockage. It is little heavy and is air cooled but if installed with a full feathering prop the weight would be centrally located and would be supply a warm cabin to be sure. It does not have and can not be ordered with a transmission so the full feathering prop (reversible) would be important. So far all the numbers are not in but it would look like something to the order of 3 1/2 knots for three hours per gallon, it has a 4 amp - 12 volt charger combo starter and is also comes with a hand start with crank on flywheel.

Well, yes, I have rowed an M-15. Forget how long the oars are; they do fit in the cabin, just barely. First owner put oarlock receivers on the comings and made a fold up step/seat across the companion way, where one sits to row, usually facing backwards, but it works to stand and face forward. For sitting, a couple seat cushions make the height about right. Oh, yeah, the mainsheet control has been moved to the stern, a bulls eye/cam cleat on a sort of 'bridge deck' under the tiller. Topping lift holds boom up, out of the way. Rows well enough it's actually a pleasure, though not very fast....but some quiet autumn evenings I've rowed a couple or three miles 'home' rather than start the o.b. and spoil the silence. Couldn't make much headway against a strong tide, to be realistic. Life is much nicer without an outboard, if you can afford the time. Electric trolling motor (only 27 lb. thrust, don't know about more powerful ones) isn't very fast, but sure is easier on the nerves than a gas o.b. So, oars are far more aesthetic, and ultimately reliable. But in some circumstances, you just have to consider an outboard a safety factor and a practical necessity.
