Took a while, but the MSOG search archives for messages posted to the Montgomery listserver has been updated through September 2003. Now you can find all those recent posts that didn't seem important at the time but now you can't do without. Many of the more interesting or widely applicable discussion find their way onto the MSOG as How-To tips, so you may want to check there first. Oops . . . Meant the M6 dink, not the M8. Hi, I am curious who designed the M-17. I had always been told that Lyle Hess was the designer of the Montgomery 17 Good old Boat magazine is now stating that Jerry Montgomery is claiming that he was the designer and not Lyle Hess. I have been told that the original drawings (blueprints) state that Lyle Hess is the designer of record on the M-17. Possibly both participated in the design of the Montgomery 17. Opinion on the "New" Montgomery

Good afternoon from Rockport, Texas. My wife and I are considering purchasing a new M 17 for sailing out of Southwest Harbor, Maine. It will be our 2nd. The first was in 1983 which we stupidly sold after 3 years. So far we are planning to make a trip to the factory in December to take a look at the new production but, the folks at the plant have been less than enthusiastic about our making the trip. It makes us wonder what is up. We found Jerry Montgomery to be wonderful to work with in 1981 when we were building a Bristol Channel Cutter and using one of his dinks (absolutely the best tender ever built!) and also just teriffic when he delivered our M 17 to Corpus Christi, TX in 1983. I would greatly appreciate your sharing any recent experiences in the new production line with us. Cheers and have a great day. Skip Langley

Bob, Thanks for clearing that misconception up. We do appreciate the pictures. Looking forward to the visit. If all goes well, we would plan to order a boat for early spring finish and probably drive out from Texas to pick it up. When we head for Maine in early summer, we would trailer it up ourselves. The plan is to find a great little pocket cruiser that we can really fix up in a "finest kind" of yacht fashion, and of course, the M 17 seems to be a great start. I envision this boat to be a "head turner" in Southwest Harbor. After owning Hinckleys, Morris's, Sabres, Grand Banks, and a Bristol Channel Cutter which Sam highly customized for us, pride of ownership is a big thing with us. At the same time, we know that it is not the money that you spend but the quality and pride that you lavish on the boat that makes it special. That is what is so appealing about the M 17. The purchase is always just the beginning. Have a great week. Skip

Sailing the Montgomery 15 and 17

Hi, I'm new to the list and am the current owner of a Contessa 26. I am considering down sizing and am very interested in the M-17. I live in eastern North Carolina and if there is anybody near my area that might be willing to take me for a sail, I would love it. According to the list most of the owners near to me seem to be in the Chesapeake area. I would be willing to make a drive of 200 miles or so to see and possibly sail on one these boats. For those Erskine Childers fans out there, British magazine, "Classic Boat" www.classicboat.co.uk , has a great feature on "Riddle of the Sands" in the October, 2003 issue. I subscribe to "Classic Boat", but it is available at the newsstand of our Grand Rapids, Michigan Barnes & Noble, so I imagine it's available any any Barnes & Noble. Great Magazine. If you like "Classic Boat", check out, also, the British magazine "Water Craft".

Hello my name is Alex, I have purchased my very own montgomery 15, today oct, 3. I rescued her. She was sitting in the the corner of a boat yard for about four years. Trees were actually growing out of the cockpit. Unfortunatly there is no mast. Is there anyone in Connecticut or any one in the northeast, who would let come aboard to take measurments of there mast. By taking measurments I can rebuild a new mast myself, I just need to know where various items are positioned. I would like to do this within the next couple of weeks.
