I have successfully fabricated Stainless Steel parts using a bi-metal hacksaw blade. I made a mast tabernacle that way. If the stainless material is hardened though, only an abrasive blade will work. McMaster-Carr sells both. Although I don't know about the M-17, I was without a centerboard on my M-15 for a while and, although it didn't really feel any different, there was a big difference in the amount of leeway when beating. My best luck has been with an abrasive disk grinder. I used a regular disk but I noticed when I was in a really nice hardware store they have disks for SS. I had to borrow the grinder from work. M17 Adventure

I recently completed a 6-day 190-mile adventure in my M17 from Sacramento to San Francisco. A friend and I launched the boat into the Sacramento River about 8-miles north of Old Town Sacramento. We worked our way down through the Delta nearly to Stockton before heading out through the Carquinez Straight to San Francisco Bay and ultimately to Alameda. The ability to quickly lower the mast allowed us to pass through the Cross Delta Channel and under many low bridges. We fought headwinds nearly the entire journey and tidal currents half the time as well. We encountered brutal chop off the Concord Naval Weapons Station and hit bottom in some of the most unlikely places. San Pablo Bay was a long, drenching grind, as I knew it would be. I had purchased a new Nissan 6hp 4-stroke outboard which arrived hours before our departure including a separate install-it-yourself battery charger option which I installed in a few minutes. This engine performed absolutely flawlessly. Sadly (for a sailor) we had to motor almost the entire trip. I was astonished to find that the engine consumed only a gallon of gasoline a day; 6-gallons for the entire trip. It was embarrassing to stop at a fuel dock. I'm glad I got the 6hp. It's the same frame as the 4 and 5hp models, and although we normally ran it at less than half-throttle, there were times when we needed it all against wind and current. No complaints about the M17. Tod Mills is the wind steering guru. At the 2003 CBR he hooked up his wind vane and then minute by minute pulled away from me. I have the tiller lock boxes like Connie. I lost ground to Tod when the wind took those little shifts and I had to recognize the shift, unlock, correct course and lock the tiller back. Tod kept tracking the wind and pulling away. I never gave much thought to a wind vane before, but I was very impressed. Hey John C. - sounds like you had a great trip. Thanks for posting it. steve Steve R. has anyone tried to see how the boat would sail (apart from windward) without the centerboard, does the extra weight of the board make a noticeable difference. what if the you were planning on a trip down the bay and you did not want to overload the little vessel with the extra supplies so to compensate you removed the board, I'm just asking, I really don't know if it should even be considered an option.

Hey John, I liked your pics of your trip through the Delta area of CA. I recently competed a motorcycle trip through that same region. I did get a chance to sail the Bay while I was in SF, but on a quite large vessel, a French made Beneteau 51. By the way, my M23 and your M17 have the same hull color, my M17 is a faded yellow. How do you mount your mast in that offset manner to your trailer? Have you constructed some special brackets? Someone on the list built a wind system for an M17 and reported that it worked very well. On my M15 I just trim the boat; put a Forespar Tiller Extension on the tiller and into the box in the cockpit side, and then play with the length adjustment so that it will hold the boat on course while I disappear down into the cabin, or just sit back in the cockpit and let "Iron Mike" steer. Sheet to tiller steering also works but gets more complicated. This is a solution if you are going to be on one course for several hours and want to hold a course +/- 5 degrees (assuming the wind doesn't change in velocity) However for short breaks, the first two solutions are quicker and easier to set up. The only problem with the first two is that the boat will change course if you move about. At least on the M15 it is quite sensitive to changes in fore and aft trim. Connie M15 #400
