Hi, Any news on the festival program? I know that Fantomas-Melvins Bigband will come but who else? And what about the Yoshida Tatsuya/Satoko Fuji recording from last year which was just released? Fred Frith solo

Hi! Has anybody seen Fred frith play solo recently? Or maybe more specifically, since he released "Clearing"? I've seen him a few times, and it has always been pure free improv. But on "Clearing" it seems much more structured, perhaps even composed, and I was wondering if he is perfromng any of that live these days. There is many of the things on "Clearing" I would love to hear him perform in some form or other live, for example "Theater" I think it's called. It has a slightly "turkish" feeling to it. I love Freds guitar playing and I wish he would release more. I feel there is many sides to it, which very rarely gets released. For the last several years, it has almost only been pure improv records. Oviously, something like blues and fingerpicking styles are a huge influence on him, but it's pretty rare that he records anything like that. I'd love to hear a CD of Fred takng on some different compostions, perhaps een some old lues songs or something like that. i believe zorn and arto played together and with the ruins (to combine 2 threads) 3 or 4 years ago at the knit, but alas i was not there. the trio polo ponies was a golden palominos offshoot that haven't played together since the 80s. _________________________________________________________________ Tired of spam? Having heard only about 20 Merzbow releases, my recommendations would be the following: * "Cloud Cock 00 Grand" This was the first (and only?) CD release on Merzbow's ZSF ("zu-su-fu") label. It's from the early nineties, and it still has a lot of ties with his collage work. Absolutely stunning. It's hard to find as only 500 were pressed. A copy went on eBay two days ago for $46.05. * "Noisembryo" This was mentioned in someone else's post already, and it's one of the highlights of the "noise electronics" period. They may still carry this at Forced Exposure * "Space Metallizer" Here's where techno's influence on Merzbow becomes apparent. There's all kinds of analog EMS tweaking, very beautiful sounds. Not as harsh as we have come to expect. * "Hard Lovin' Man" Mind-blowing album of his new-found laptop direction. Easy to find. * "Amlux" Another laptop album, and my overall favorite Merzbow album. This one has amazing sounds, especially the last track "Looping Jane". There's a remix album of this called "Merzbeat" that is also really good. I see the man has a new album called "Puroland" which I intend to get as well. I'm quite sold on his laptop stuff. I read on the net that his own favorite album of recent years if "Collapse 12 Floors", which I haven't heard. Frankco

Just so everybody has plenty of time to shutter the windows and call their pets in off the street, here's plenty of advance warning... David Howarth and I are going to be rampaging up and down the eastern seaboard next May, including the 15th-19th at Victoriaville. I have questions for those lucky enough to have been to previous FIMAVs. 1) What's the best way to get to Victoriaville if we've made it to Montreal by rail? 2) What hotel do you recommend? Is there one particular hotel that's traditionally been The Place To Be? 3) Which would be a better side trip: Quebec City or Toronto? 4) Any early news about events going on in DC, Philly, NYC or Montreal in the days leading up to or after Victo? I'm sure I'll have more questions in weeks to come, but this is a start. William Crump

Talk of new recordings by Meredith Monk and Heiner Goebbels has peaked my interest in both composers, though I've heard nothing by them. Are MERCY and EISLERMATERIAL (sic) good places in to their respective soundworlds, ro can I do better elsewhere? Also, I've really enjoyed Giya Kancheli's "Styx" (Deutsche Grammophon, 20/21 Series) and ABII NE VIDEREM / TWO PRAYERS (ECM). What is essential by this composer? Also, this might have been broached not long ago, but other than the excellent Berkshire Record Outlet, are there less-obvious (than Tower, Amazon, etc.) places for online mailorder of classical music? Finally, this might not be appropriate, but I'll take the chance of pointing out Drimala Records' pretty steep discounts on everythig they sell, up till Christmas Eve.
