I have heard that being an engineered fiber it is susceptible to chafe and subsequent loss of strength.* Hi Tom, Dyneema is really cool stuff. It has the same breaking strength as wire of the same diameter (2200 lb for 1/8") but is so light it floats. Like wire, it has practically no stretch. It is being used to replace wire hawsers on commercial fishing boats and tug boats. I don't think chafe is a particular concern as it is also used to replace wire cable in commercial logging operations with big machines dragging huge logs over the ground. Google "dyneema" and "Amsteel" for some amazing videos about its applications. Dyneema is a brand name of the fiber, Amsteel is a brand name for dyneema rope made by Samson. It is an uncored hollow single braid that is the easiest of all lines to splice. Splices are almost a necessity since it is so slippery it does not hold knots well. I splice a thimble into both ends of the stays but for other uses I make a longer splice that can be "luggage tagged" to any fitting. Go to the Samson web site for splicing information and lots of other cool information. I have been using Amsteel Blue (it comes in several different colors despite its name) for my backstay, running backstays, outhaul, vang, jib and staysail tack downhauls, etc. on Chiquita for several years with no problems. These are all "dynamic" lines that are easily adjusted under way. Because of a characteristic called "creep" regular dyneema is not recommended for "static" lines such as the shrouds and forestays on a boat. There is a version (Dynex Dux) specifically made for those applications but it is much more expensive. I have received the Main Sail I purchased from Daniel Rice/Kestrel #208 and am ready to send it to Sailcare for reconditioning by the LaMauney Process. They have a Sail Loft and have quoted me a price of $67 to convert it to a Lose Footed Main. I just Day sail and do not Race thou anytime 2 sailboats are on the same waters it's a race:-). I was wondering if it was worth it to make the conversion. Any input is appreciated I know the current sails are made Lose footed. George Merry Helen II M15 #602

After mentioning our intentions to list Seranita, our M-17, we have made a deal to sell it as a result of an inquiry within the group on this site. Thanks to everyone and thanks for this web site! We'll be delivering Seranita to the new owners out in Palo Alto this June, and picking up the M-23 Dream Time in Bend, Oregon right after. Things seen to be working out!

Congratulations on the sale and the purchase. I am very well acquainted with Dream Time and am certain you will be quite happy with her. Although I am sad to be losing John & Julie as cruising companions, we did create many great memories together. I'm certain Dream Time will do the same for you. Who knows, maybe Faith and Dream Time will again cross tacks. Ha. Well, I certainly wouldn't recommend following me! Plus I have the impression you, Jerry, have a lot more knowledge of the area, especially from the perspective of being in a little sailboat, than any guidebook. A guidebook just gives me a chance to study a little on my own. I am definitely liking the idea of making this trip, with or without a group. The group sounds fun in a lot of ways though the complications and compromises always go up with more people. These things sort of go up with the square of the number of people. What is the best way to stay up to date on what you are planning? The Tucson event in Bahia San Carlos on the mainland side of the gulf is interesting but would be a really long drive for me starting from the middle of California. Bahia de Los Angeles on the Baja penninsula looks good to me on the basis of a Google Earth review and is a lot closer than San Carlos. Crossing the gulf from Bahia de Los Angeles to the Kino area sounds cool but the Kino area doesn't look as interesting from Google Earth. Driving to Kino also looks like a long way and not a very interesting way for me. The drive to Bahia de Los Angeles on the other hand looks doable and interesting. Where does one arrange to safely leave ones vehicle and trailer at Bahia de Los Angeles? What are the launching conditions like there? The islands nearer Bahia de Los Angeles seem to have more anchorages than those on the Kino / mainland side (of course I haven't been there in real life) and it seems like a very nice few days could be spent in the area of Bahia de Los Angeles. Tyler mentions March and October being the best times on the Sear of Cortez. March is a bit fast for me, June is doable but not inside of Tyler's windows, October would work well. I guess I better be getting with Elliot Patteson for a storm jib and a second reef in my mainsail. If anybody in interested, I'm thinking about taking my Sage down to Mexico in June to float around for a week or so and would be happy to have some company. I'd go to the midriff area, probably launching either at Bahia De Los Angeles on the Baja Side and island hopping across, or the other way around, launching at Kino Bay. I've done this area several times but not for about 20 or 25 years and really enjoyed it and it's time I did it again before I get too old. No marinas, no gas stops, no nothing, but I always caught enough fish to feed an army. Usually light air but nobody but an idiot would go w/o a storm jib, need good ground tackle, lots of gas, water and sunscreen.
