This discussion reminds me I have been wanting to put a latch on my port locker that opens into the cabin on my Montgomery 15. My concern is the clearance for the nuts to hold whatever it is I use between the locker hatch and the cockpit seat. It seems there isn't much room there, possibly not enough for nuts to secure the hasps and latches I have found online and in catalogs. My boat is a 1986 model. Could anyone share photos or details how they have added latches or hasps to these lockers on a Montgomery 15? Information on if the nuts interfere when the locker is closed would be interesting. With winds of 14-16 and gusts to 20, were doing everything pretty well with PFD's on, the companion way closed up, the main reefed and the gene at about 90%. We made it to the windward mark comfortably, then on the down wind run we opened the gene to 150% and that was fine as well. But we were then over confident and wanting to compete, so we kept the gene out for the windward run to the finish line.? Then we go hit by a gust and before we could release the sheets our mast nearly touched down and we took on a good amount of water. I don't know how much of our sail hit the water, I was too busy scrambling to?stay in the boat, but I know we were nearly vertical for a moment.?After coming back up the water was below the top of the bench seats and companion way, but after bailing out we realized we had a lot of water in every locker and the bilge was full.? I?don't think the lockers swung open especially not all 3 and I do have some cheep weather stripping on them which creates a little suction when opening them, so I don't know how we got so much water inside them. Please let me know if anyone can advise on best ways to seal the lockers. I'm also considering adding a bilge and a cockpit pump if anyone can advise on that. Thanks,? Ron McNeil M17/Jackpot/#675

We have this latch installed on the deep port side locker and the stern locker. More than a hasp, it latches firmly. Does not catch legs or lines. Requires the screw to be ground flush to the nut on the inner flange of the hatch. Can be locked when leaving the boat for extended periods. We have 3 small padlocks keyed alike. One for each locker and one for the companionway. Alternatively you can also run a line from the inside surface of the hatch to a cleat over the port q-berth. We tried this for a while. You have to lead the line down from the hatch, to a turning point (pad eye), then forward along the interior face of the cockpit side. I like the external latches better. Your experience may differ. Left at 9am and was home by 11:30 pm. As I said the boat is pristine. Maybe a bit over powered by a Tohatsu 5hp. The one area of concern I have is that edges where the hull meets the centerboard trunk appear not to be bonded in a few places, one as long as a 6 inch run. The previous owners report no leakage but their experience was only one sail on Lake Tahoe. Part of the seam looks to have been caulked with a white epoxy(?). Anyone have experience with this joint, what it's supposed to look like, or the making of repairs. Incidentally, I will be sailing the boat on Tomales Bay to begin with, a beautiful 6 mile long, 1 mile (avg.) wide bay bordered by Point Reyes National Seashore to the West, and with the San Andreas Fault running down the middle; working my way up to sailing San Francisco Bay, and North to San Pablo and Susiun Bays and the Sacramento River Delta. I have some experience with boats and the sea as a commercial fisherman, but I am new to sailing. I've taken some lessons on SF Bay and will beginning a six week course of lessons through Sailing Experience Adventures (SEA), a non-profit that teaches adult and youth sailing on SF Bay. Thinking of selling M15 #616

The operative word is Thinking J I have new trailer tires, outboard mount on the trailers, spare of course and the trailer was inspected in Maryland in 2011. Boat upgrades are new Hyde sails, a new Potter jib which I have as a storm (never used because I was never over powered.yet). New Ida Rudder w/mast crutch. New custom made boat sling for haul out by crane. Cockpit Teak grating so feet stay dry. Honda 2 hp outboard. VHF radio and mast mounted antenna. Tiller tamer and tiller extension. Boat and trailer are located in the Metro Washington DC/Baltimore and Annapolis area. Boat condition is 8-8.5 out of 10 as I should polish her up and clean up teak. What do you guys feel the sell value is. These boats are never found on the east coast is seems. I am eying that new if Jerry gets done sanding soon Sage15 as a uni rig...because I will soon be retired and need a simpler sail plane. Opinions appreciated. When I rebuild the foredeck of my M17, I removed the single cleat in the center of the deck. I installed two new cleats, one on each side, mounted on top of varnished hardwood pads to raise the height enough so docking lines clear the toerail. They have backing plates (of course) I also installed a chock at the tip of the bow to guide an anchor rode. On the M23, I use a length of heavy, clear plastic hose slid over the dock lines where they contact the toerail. Knots in the line keep the hose in place. Easy. I'll look for a pic of my M17 foredeck mod.
