Mast - Anodizing

Greets: It's a snowy day here in Oregon, and while puttering in the shop with my woodstove keeping things toasty, I started pondering if there is a way to clean up worn anodizing spots on my mast, without making things worse. The wear is from the stays, as the original owner would bungie them to the mast while trailering. I guess I could go to a two part epoxy over the top, but that seems like 1) overkill, and 2) excessive work. Your thoughts please. Regards, Steve

GPS errors

This summer in late August I was cruising up the Tred Avon river in a light fog with a good 75 yards visibility and light winds. There is a marker that sits right on a Longitude line on the chart. I was running down the same longitude line and was planing to turn at the mark. I saw the dreaded shore first and finally found the the marker 100 yards off the longitude line. The land was actually on the longitude line as displayed by the GPS. The chart is 3 yrs old. Would anyone know what might have been going on? Could the GPS be that far off? So far most of the discussion has been on "where". For those who have to schedule vacation time at work, maybe "when" is the more urgent issue, and "where" can be decided later. If we are considering two rallys (inland and coastal), it would be nice if we could spread them out such as early summer / late summer so it might be possible for some (me? ;-) to go to both. Mark and Lloyd, you guys both mentioned plans to do the San Juans this year. Any idea when yet? Larry Y.

Harvey, I wasn't thinking too hard when I suggested a "get-together" at one of big lakes in eastern washington. About the only two that come to mind are Moses and Chelan. I just thought I'd throw the idea in the hopper -- Idaho is just a bit too far for me to go from the Seattle area unless it were planned as a serious vacation. Although, I'm sure Idaho lakes are way more scenic as would be the San Juans. If a San Juan Island trip is a possibilty, my preference would be to do it in short jaunts rather than trying to make Friday Harbor in a day from Anacortis. In fact, I'd probably avoid San Juan Island all together -- nothing but a huge tourist trap IMHO. I'd go for a destination on one of the less popular Islands. Maybe to a marina that the less adventurous or time-restricted could get to by ferry. That's about the only input I have on that one. Bob and Harvey and potential rendezvousers, (find that in your spell check) I think Harvey hit it right on the head with his list of what to look for in a potential site and time. It may be that two rendezvous' would better suit the needs of those interested if north Idaho is too far from the Seattle area. We'll just have to see who shows interest. My personal preference would be two. One in early summer at Pend Oreille, Coeur D'Alene, Priest, or even Flathead Lakes and then one in the fall on the coast, such as the San Juan trip that was discussed last year. That would line up with my sailing plans for this coming year perfectly! :-) At any rate, we'll at least have an informal weekend sail sometime this year. Larry Y. M17 Tullamore P.S. Peter, My M15 is under it's winter cover and that is covered with snow at the moment. As I recall, the hasp I bought (S/S) had mounting holes that were well below the edge of the sail locker lid opening. When you raise the sail locker lid, the inboard (cockpit) side has an indentation where the closed locker lid front edge fits. My mounting holes for the hinged hasp are below that edge, and presented no mounting problems. The other part, the square plate with the "U" was mounted on the locker lid. I don't recall if I had clearance problems, but if I did, I probably just cut off the bolt length, used a regular nut (thinner than an Elastic Stopnut) and put Loctite on it. The critical element is to have a slight interference fit of your hasp so that it won't just fall open by itself. Mine stays closed and requires a bit of effort to get it open. That way you won't have it opening inadvertantly if your leg brushes against it, or the boat gets hit by a powerboat wake.
