Perimeter Trip

Having just retired in early January, I have the time to do one of my "goals". Starting in May, I plan to trailer my M17 around the perimeter (more or less) of the US, lauching it in places I have always wanted to sail. I would enjoy having company at any, or all of the sites, and especially would like to have some first hand knowledge about the areas where I plan to sail. The list below gives the places and the approximate times I will be there. First week in May: Perdido Bay, Alabama Second week in May: Corpus Christi bay and Padre Island Late in May: San Carlos, Mexico Early June: Newport beach - Catalina Island, CA Mid June: San Francisco Bay (Hope to compete in the small cruiser race) Early July San Juan Islands Mid July - August: Canoeing the Yellowstone river Early August: Apostle Islands, WI Mid August: North Channel, Ontario Late August: Bras d' Ore Lake, Nova Scotia Early Sept: Southwest Harbor, Maine Mid Sept: Mystic Seaport, CN Late Sept: Cambridge (Chesapeake) End of Sept: Home! The timing of the trip is loose but I plan to be in San Carlos while the regatta is on (May 23, 24, and 25), and in San Francisco area in time for the Potter/Montgomery race, which I'm assuming will be held close to June 15. The Apostle Islands is a spot I've been hankering to try for years. Keep us posted with your schedule as you go, and if it works out, I'd love to join you there. John, it sounds as if you are going to have a wonderful trip. Depending upon my work schedule, the San Carlos portion of your trip is one that I may be able to make. I will let you know later in the year. I don't know whether or not you enjoy a "wee toddy" or two, but if you do, don't miss the Florabama bar, located on the Florida-Alabama line, right on the beach. It has live music (sometimes two or three bands in different areas, perhaps a blues band, a rock band, etc.) , and a really pleasant mix of customers ranging from the Navy fighter pilots to locals to bikers to sailors... you get the idea. Sandy, It does seem like a lot to do in just one summer, but I don't think my wife would like me being gone for much longer. As it is, she is planning to fly out to San Francisco for a week and again in Maine. I've sold her the trip by mentioning Fishermans wharf, sea food dinners (SF) and lobster at the end of a dock (Maine). I'm looking at this trip as a sort of "sampler", and later I'll return to those areas I really like and will spend more time there. I've already sailed in some of these areas. I chartered a sailboat in the Apostle islands in1989, and got a chance to sail Southwest Harbor with a friend in 1990, so they are already "return" trips. The first response I received tonight was notification that the SCA will be held in August, so I'm looking at the trip to see if I can arrange to be in Monterey about that time. I was really hoping I could get tips on tunning my rig from Jerry. One of the biggest problems is not finding great places to sail, it's more about having to pass by so many good places...at least for now. Tentatively the plan is to go to the Dry Tortugas in 2003, and then see about the Bahamas and maybe Cuba afterwards. John Miss T M17 # 372

John; If you're retired, why do this in one year? Take 2 or more years and spend more time in each place. Do Florida and the gulf coast in one year and the west coast the next year. Spend the whole spring in Mexico another year. Sandy

Catching up

A few quick things. 1) I appreciate those who have expressed an eagerness to give me money. Actually, the begging will begin in March, and I'll send out an e-mail at that time. Meanwhile, invest your $5.00 in something solid, maybe Enron and K-mart, like I did 3 months ago. As a result of my investment acumen, I'd like to request a little more for the web site this year, about $900 each. ;) 2) To earn my money, I have created a new database called the MSOG Book List. Please add your favorite books, the ones that have been discussed on the listserver, so we can start our own little reading list about sailing and the sea. I think it's a good idea to confine the list to those general topics. You can find the link under "Other Resources" on the MSOG site. The book entry screen is simple and should be self-explanatory, and I've already added Hiscock's "Cruising Under Sail" to get us started. I'll refine the program as more get added. There's still a lot of winter left for reading. 3)I have marked a lot of e-mails from the past several months to follow up on. Now that things are lightening up at work, I hope to get to those very soon and add a whole bunch of new stuff. 4) I think I've made all of the database corrections, additions and deletions that some of you have sent to me. Please e-mail me again if I missed making your change. 5) Someone on the listserver was asking after the article about the M-15 trip to Hawaii, that story is on the MSOG web site under "See the M-boats", then "M-15".
