Steve, Oar leathers are to prevent wear on the looms of your oars at the oarlocks. They also make rowing a lot easier if you put a bit of neetsfoot oil on them as a lubricant (I also use tallow). Another benefit is that they fill up the space in the oarlock so that you don't have so much slop there while rowing. OK, I did. Since MSOG web site fund raiser is coming up (April), I figured I'd better do SOMETHING to deceive you into thinking I've earned it (you'll know we have enough donated when I stop doing stuff again.) Actually, I thought it was a shame to repeat/lose so much of the valuable info that had been posted in the past (or pasted in the post?). So I built a 15+ megabyte MS-Access database of the 10,000 or so messages posted from January 1998 to November 2001. I re-typed every word myself. Took months. Cost thousands. Nah, actually the whole thing was pretty easy to do and took a few hours one evening. It's a simple text search, but lets you search for three different sets of words in the message itself, and by date, author, and subject. There's also some help info below the search form, since the search program isn't as sophisticated as the big boys' search engines, but then neither am I. Results are limited to 100 hits; if you exceed that, narrow the search a tad. I'll work on "Next 25" and "Last 25" buttons that will remove that 100 message limit. As with most web pages, you can Select text, Copy, and Paste it into a document on your own machine to save for future reference. For instance, Steve, ;) type in "sheet to tiller" in the first search field and you'll get 23 messages for an in-depth discussion that will tell you everything you want to know about it. Just go to "Other Resources" on the MSOG site and click on "Search List Archives". The new list server gives access to messages since November 2001, and I'm going to look into adding those in the future (probably right before next year's fundraising.) If you have any suggestions or find any problems, please e-mail me directly. Hi Cherri, You might also want to take a look at the Precision 165. I haven't seen or sailed one, but it looks good on paper and is built in FL. The Precision seems to be built for speed, with lots of sail area and light displacement for her length. She has a bulb "wing" keel. One caveate is that the lightness (750#) comes at a price. I'm sure they aren't as strongly built as Montgomeries. Come to think of it, are there ANY trailer boats as strong as the Monty's? Steve Tyree, P-15

Oar leathers go between the oar and the oarlock. If you row a boat much, the oars will get chewed up without them. I took a suggestion from Dynamite Payson in one of his instant boat books and used braided nylon line in place of leathers. Basically, you wrap the line (I used 1/8") around the oar and hold it in place with brass brads. It's worked fairly well, although I should have wrapped the line tighter. Thanks for you help, Connie. I used to live in Ashford, CT, and my son was born at Hartford Hospital. If we get up that way, I'll let you know. I am in touch with an M-15 owner in Morgantown, W. VA, and if my husband says we can afford it, I will probably buy his this spring. Mark doesn't really care about sailing too much and money isn't plentiful since Sept. 11, but we live in an ideal area for sailing ( Barnegat Bay) and it is a passion for me. I am looking to buy a used boat with the requirements of being easy to solo sail, shallow draft, and flexible usage as either a daysailor or overnighter. I keep coming back to the M-15 as the perfect fit on paper but have never seen one, nor can I find any independent evaluations on the internet. Most people I talk with have not even heard of Montgomery sailboats, which may be related to the fact that I live in NJ and the company is on the West Coast. Can anyone give me some assurance that the boat is as good as it sounds and also anything negative about it so that I can make a reasonably intelligent choice this time and have a boat that I can stay with for a long time? My first boat was a Bristol 24 which was a wonderful boat but sat in the marina for lack of crew most of the time, plus the marina fees were killers. Thanks. Cherri Pavuk mcpavuk(a)worldnet.att.net

Hi Cherri, You've hit the right spot now! As far as I'm concerned you can't beat a Montgomery 15 for what you want to do. I've owned a Goldplater 29footer for 26 years - same boat - loved it: then wanted to move up to it's big brother a 38 footer; quickly saw that that was a mistake and sold it again. Finally sold the 29 footer because we have been up and down the New England coast for years and years: harbors are now wall to wall boats; no more peace and quiet; not to mention the marina and storage costs. Then bought a Bolger designed MICRO - cat yawl - and had a ball with it, but ..... stepping the 26 foot long free-standing mast became more than I could handle. At that point I found a rather derelict ComPac 16 in Florida; bought it; rebuilt it and sailed it for a few years. but, .......it had no proper storage that every sailboat needs; and didn't point very well. It was a nice little boat, but..... Then I heard about the Montgomery 15. Got on this website and asked for information. It came from all corners of the USA. and Alaska. All my questions were answered; brochures were sent.... By now, I had to have an M15, so finally got one in Panama City Florida; bought it sight unseen, drove down and picked it up. I have now owned it for four years. It is an excellent design; good storage in cockpit sail lockers as well as in the cabin; has a big double berth forward (with no mast support); has a porta-potti. It sails very nicely indeed; is fast, and weatherly. I am totally happy with my choice and can only say it is the best of anything in this size range. I haul my M15 with a VW 1.8T GTI. You came to the right place for information about Montgomerys, Cherri; however, I'm not sure if the opinions you get here will be entirely objective. You see, all Montgomery owners tend to love their boats with a passion strong enough almost to cloud reason. (I said 'almost'). My own opinion given your description is that a Montgomery is precisely what you need. It is a very sturdy, reliable, great-sailing, salty-looking boat that will tow behind almost anything, and fit easily in your garage. For a great comparison of the Montgomery 15 with another popular pocket cruiser, go to the Montgomery Sailboat Owners Group website, click on "See the M-Boats" then choose "M-15" and finally "Montgomery 15 and Compac 16".
