Now what have we done?

It all started a few months back with an invitation from John and June Vigor to spend a weekend on their Cape Dory 25d, Jubula located in Bellingham Washington. Since the CD 25d is right at the top of the list of my all time favorite boats, we were excited to accept the generous offer. To sum up the weekend experience. John turned the boat over to Kit and I, we spent a day and night aboard ,we were smitten. John, who in 1987, sailed a 31 foot Camper & Nicholson sloop from South Africa to the US with June and their son, mentioned he has this desire to do it again. He said he has an eye on a similar boat located in South Africa and with the current favorable exchange rate, was considering acquiring it. He asked if we might be interested in purchasing the Cape Dory. Over the past 3 years we have restored and outfitted M17 #369 to a point, that as a project, she is quite complete. Since a part of my fascination with classic sailboats is the restoration process we had contemplated a project boat to work on while enjoying the M17 on the water. The CD 25d was, however, beyond what we had in mind for a project boat in both size and cost. Caution and logic to the wind, we now have a M17 in one barn and a Cape Dory in another. Initial thoughts on a project boat were that while restoring an older boat, the "One boat at a time rule" would not apply. The Cape Dory was manufactured in 1982 and is need of some, but not serious, restoration. Despite my feeble arguments over a period of several months, it is agreed, the work needed is not enough to keep the boat from being sailed and so the rule has been exercised. The M17 has exceeded all expectations as the perfect all around trailer sailor and we will possible regret the decision to part with her. She has refined my rusty sailing skills and taught Kit to sail from beginner thought accomplished sailor. For us she has inspired confidence in the sport and introduced us to an activity we both thoroughly enjoy. She has taken us to some beautiful areas in the Pacific Northwest and California and introduced us to some very nice people. I will post a description of the boat in a follow up message if any are interested and will send a copy to Doug requesting he post in the MSOG site. We realize a lot is to be given up in the way of convenience, but for our future plans of extended cruising in Peter's neighborhood and possibly Mexico, we hope to gain in the areas of room and comfort. New Owner: M15 #412 "Chimpanzee"

After a prolonged search I have acquired a 1988 Montgomery 15, hull number 412. #412 has had many owners. The pedigree, as near as I can reconstruct, is thus: 1. Chris Jennewein of Atlanta, Georgia purchased the boat from Montgomery Marine Products on February 29th, 1988. 2. Mr. Jennewein either sold or gave the boat to Gigi Jennewein Fenton, of Greencastle, Indiana. Date unknown. One presumes that Mrs. Fenton is related to Mr. Jennewein. 3. Eric D. Cosens of Spencer, Indiana, purchased the boat from Mrs. Fenton on July 20, 1999. 4. Randy Cameron of Indianapolis, Indiana, purchased #412 from Mr. Cosens. Date unknown. 5. I bought the boat from Mr. Cameron on February 16th (yesterday). Mr. Cameron adored the boat and was clearly loath to sell it, but his wife did not like to sail, so room had to be made in the driveway. I drove out from Annapolis and towed it home. The boat now sits in the heated shops of Chesapeake Light Craft, my boatbuilding firm, awaiting refitting. In spite of the many and various owners, the boat doesn't appear to have had a name, or if it did, the lettering has since faded from the gelcoat. I have dubbed her "Chimpanzee." I think it's a whimsical, fun, boat, so she'll have a whimsical, fun name. Also in spite of changing hands many times, Chimpanzee is in beautiful condition. The gelcoat is slightly faded but I think I'll be able to buff it back to a fine gloss. From a careful survey, I'd say that the boat never was allowed to sit with rainwater or leaves in it; the topsides and interior are exceptionally clean. I had never seen a Montgomery 15 up close. To those who might be deterred by the expense of one, new or used, I would say: you're getting what you pay for. I have rarely seen such clean mold work, such thorough attention to construction detail. The design and fabrication is amazingly well thought out. The acquisition of the M15 brings the count of my personal fleet of small sailing boats to 9. Yes, I'm seriously addicted to small boats. The other eight boats range from 8-foot sailing prams to a 20-foot Pacific Proa. I owned a Ranger 23 for a time, and I've done some lengthy cruising in boats up to 45 feet. But while many sailors keep moving up in size, over the years I keep trying to find smaller boats with big cruising capability. Readers of this mailing list will understand, I'm sure. I have no plans for exploits in Chimpanzee. For the near future, I will thoroughly refit the boat, then take it to Rock Hall, Maryland, where it will live at the Rock Hall Yacht Club. They are installing a boat lift there. I'll be able to leave Chimp rigged and ready to go, to be plucked from its trailer by the lift and launched on impulse for daysailing and weekending in the Upper Bay. While I could rig the boat and go sailing in 15 minutes, I do plan to do some refitting: 1. I'll polish the gelcoat. 2. I'll lift the boat with the company forklift to remove and refinish the centerboard and refair the keel. 3. Renew the teak, and build new teak drop-boards for the companionway (they disappeared somewhere in the litany of owners, to be replaced by an ugly piece of plywood). 4. I've ordered new sails from Ulmer Kolius in Annapolis (I'm a longtime dinghy racer, and you know how we dinghy racers are about sails). 5. Install all new running and standing rigging, including Harken roller furling. 6. I will change out the horrid plastic jam cleats and fairleads for proper blocks and cam cleats. The jam cleats and so forth appear to be "stock" from the factory. I'll be retrofitting cleaner systems: liberally sprinkling the decks with bits of Harken, much more to my dinghy-racing tastes. 7. Install a watertight Lewmar hatch in the foredeck. While I like to sail mostly in the Fall, Winter, and Spring on the Chesapeake, the 8" x 8" screened hatch will take the edge off of hot and humid nights in August. Nor'Sea 27 Fest in the Bay Area

A new 2002 Nor'Sea 27 will be at..... The Annual Nor'Sea 27 Fest at the Oakland Yacht Club April 20th. (on a Saturday) Every year Nor'Sea owners converge at the Oakland Yacht club for a Nor'Sea fest. Nor'Seas come in from all over, some are already at the marina (6) and people fly in to see and talk Nor'Sea. We have a great dinner and drinks at the Yacht club. I know some of you who live in the Bay Area had asked where to see a Nor'Sea 27. We have just finished a brand new 2002 model that will be on display at Nor'Sea 27 Fest 2002. This boat was ordered in September and just finished a couple of days ago. The Surveyor said he had never seen a better built boat but I did have to buy him lunch. :-) This year we have many improvements (if you have been following the boat over the years) including: New fuel tank set-up. Water tanks are now removable and have nice clean out ports on them. A 3 switch master DC system for the new group 31 batterys. The Rudder seam is now epoxyed all the way around. The area where the bottom rudder gudgeon bolts up is now a solid fiberglass area instead of a hollow area. So if any of you would like to attend this Nor'Sea party let me know and we can make arrangements for the dinner/hotel information. It runs concurrent with Pacific Sail Expo, at Jack london Square and we plan on having a M_boat in the show like we did last year. Montgomery 23 Offshore Cutter update.

Jerry and I have completed removing the new deck mold from the plug and it looks great! We welded up a pipe frame that reinforces the mold and then welded on the wheels upside down. Using our hoist we lifted the mold from the plug. It came off after about 15 minutes of placing wedges around the perimeter of the deck. we have already wet sanded and polished the front half. Looks great and is polished to a mirror finish. Can't wait to spray the new deck and lay it up. All three hatch molds have been polished, sprayed and laid up. I will 'pull' them this afternoon. We had to do a new centerboard plug because the one we did earlier wouldn't work for the foundry we delivered it too. Seems there going to sand cast it as a loose part and it will be made of BRONZE. Very heavy but will keep the 23 stiff and weatherly. Jerry went off hunting pig in Arizona (i think he left this morning) after spending the weekend back in Sacramento.
