Hello Larry and Listers, I'd like to install some locker latches on my M17, but need ones that don't dig into your legs while moving around the cockpit. The soft draws look fine, but I wonder how sturdy they are. We need to have a latch which is preferably metal and mounts flush. Up to this point I have been using a landyard fed from inside the locker back into the galley area to a cleat. 33 degrees in Minnesota, off to the Keys on Friday! Thanks for the great replies from everyone. Really appreciate it and helps me understand the boat better. In a worse case scenario, glad it won't sink. Keeping the hatch-boards in during strong winds, and wearing a PFD, makes a lot of sense too. Question for Bert - When the boat turtled, how did you get it upright? Were you able to do it yourself or did you have crew to help? Sounds like with a knockdown, the boat will be easy to right or right itself, but the turtle may have taken some effort? Also, is it possible to bale it out at that point, or is a rescue / tow needed? Thanks guys, and if there are any other stories or advise out there, keep em coming. I can tell you unequivocally that the Monty will not sink when righted even though she is filled with water providing that the factory flotation is still in place. Instead of experimenting with a controlled capsize my advice is to wear your PFD, keep the drop boards in place and the main sheet in hand no matter how benign the sailing conditions may seem. Enjoy your Monty safely. RTH.

Boom End sheeting

Hey, all, I am looking for advice on boom sheeting. As you know, the Montgomery 17 boom sheeting is done mid-boom, with a traveler in the floor of the cockpit. I have been thinking about moving the sheet to the boom end to get the sheet out of the middle of the cockpit. I am considering installing a fiddle block on the boom end, with single block with becket on one quarter, and a single block on the other, similar to the Norsea 27 sheeting arrangement. Has anyone made such a change, and if so, how did it work out? Thanks for any comments. Will

Photo Issues

For the last year or so whenever someone posts a photo to the group and I click on the link to the photo at the bottom of the message, I get a 404 / not found message. Clicking the link used to work and I have saved a number of images over the years. When I have queried the group about this issue of the links not working, no one else seems to have the issue. I get messages all together in a digest, but I wouldn't think that would be a problem. And example of one message in the digest is below. I really miss being able to see the photos. I am not as familiar as I could be with the renovated Montgomery photo site but wonder if it is a good place to post an individual photo to go with an individual post to the group. Does anybody have an insights? Both sides, like Douglas' setup, or...? I've sailed a couple boats (Ensenada 20, Potter 19) with boom end sheeting and the mainsheet cleat on a swivel block on just one side (starboard on the E20, can't recall on the Potter). It was fine when sitting opposite the cleat side; I found it rather awkward when sitting on same side as cleat. The earlier M17's like mine had the traveler just aft of the companionway, rather than mid-cockpit. It's easy to keep it clear of everything when not sailing; it's only a bit in the way when passengers are sitting all the way forward and don't know to keep their feet out of the way of the sheet. Mine is a bit customized because when I got the boat, the original floor mounted stop pin traveler had been replaced with a 4 ft. rail & windward sheeting car fastened to the top of the seats. I cut it down and moved it to just below and behind the companionway threshold, and I'm happy with it there. Picture attached - you can see the marks on the seats where the full length rail was before, and the old holes from the original traveler mounting just a bit aft of the current traveler. So if what you're trying to do is get your mainsheet out of the middle of the cockpit, you could move it either forward or aft... cheers, John S. Hello, As Tom pointed out, the MSOG Photo Site has come a long way in the past few months. Tom Buzzi and John Manfredi were the first to upload content themselves using the site for testing purposes. Hopefully you have had a chance to see their posts and recent pictures. We are now ready to open the site up to other Montgomery owners. If you are interested in contributing, please email webmaster(a)msogphotosite.com. Please include you boat name, your name, location, and hull number and I will set up your account.
