I myself am looking forward to the Cruiser Challenge in Monterey, CA on July 18,19(?). I have my new main and a 'secret weapon' 85% jib for IOTA and am planning to chew up Potters and eat them for breakfast along with any other M-15's that dare show up. Yes Jerry, you can take that as a challenge as well as a request for your mast rake opinions before we start. The idea is that I will brag now and prepare to be humble(d) later. It's my plan to sail 'downhill' to Monterey from Santa Cruz on Friday morning 7/17, weather and seas permitting. Last year it took something around 5 hours, the first hour or so motoring, 10-15 kts in the early afternoon, a single port reach all the way. If anyone would like to sail alongside, let me know. Some company would be great! I will return on the trailer Sunday night, but could consider sailing back if encouraged... No matter, I hope to see a few of you there. Last year was good fun. In a race last year we were sailing a close reach leg with 135% genoa and full main under rainy, gusty conditions, probably 18 - 20 with big gusts. We were hit with a gust clocked by another boat at 39 kt, in which we broached, rounding up and heeling to the point where a gallon or two of solid water came over the coamings, but I don't think the boom hit the water. We righted quickly, rolled up some of the genoa and continued on our way. I wouldn't call it quite a knockdown, but it was as close as I ever hope to come to one. The only way I can envision swamping is if a huge gust (50 - 70) knocked the sail into the water and continued driving the boat to leeward, forcing the sail under water. Hope never to test this! john: all boats can experience a knockdown. i've read of M15s being knocked down but all boats righted. i see the common detail of these stories is that the main sheet was cleated. i've not read of one having a knockdown experience in the M17. my three-plus years of sailing an M15 tells me this - reef early. the M15 will tell you if she is overpowered. listen to what she is telling you in her sailing performance and through the tiller (weather helm). my two month ownership & sailing an M17 states the boat can take a blow. to be honest i am much more willing to 'hot dog' in SWEET PEA (M17) than i ever was in SCRED (M15). the latest potter instances would be difficult to duplicate in an M15 or M17 -- one: water that shallow would not allow one to sail the mboats. two: the centerboard trunk of the m15 will not allow water into the cabin. only the _older_ M17s have the centerboard pendent in the cabin. three: the mboats have _ballast_ in the skeg keel. it is only the older M17s with cast iron centerboards that have significant weight that 'moves'. still, if the cast iron board did return to the 'slot' it would still be in the skeg keel, not in the cabin (ie, there would still be a righting moment). i look forward to reading other folks' thoughts. dave scobie M17 #375 - SWEET PEA visit SWEET PEA's www-site: http://www.m17-375.webs.com --- On Mon, 6/22/09, John and DesAnne Hippe <jdhippe(a)gmail.com> wrote: Hello All, After reading the post regarding the Texas 200 and the WWP that sunk I was thinking about the Monty's self-recovery ability. now a san juan adventure with jerry doing tests of an 'm16'! what a trip!!! when i was heading back towards anacortes (only a week off 'approved' by my boss) made a stop at friday harbor. one, of the many, folks stopping by the boat and saying, "is that a montgomery?1"; stated he owned from '97 to '00 a M17 bulb keel in hawaii. it was his belief the boat was sailed to hawaii before his ownership. he had many, exictedly told, stories to tell about sailing the boat toe-rail in the water and out-sailing many a larger boat. love your boats jerry. would be a great to meet you in person and sail. dave scobie M17 #375 - SWEET PEA visit SWEET PEA's www-site: http://www.m17-375.webs.com --- On Mon, 6/22/09, jerry <jerry(a)jerrymontgomery.org> wrote: You mean nobody got et by sharks? Hey Rick and Deborah, It was great to have you guys along. only wish you could have stayed. Comin at ya from Montegue Harbor tonight. Another beautiful spot. After a brief rainshower this morning we had a nice sail from Ganges to here. I'm sure you'll get many pictures of your boat once everyone gets home. Last cruise, which was only a week long, yielded something like 1000 pictures combined! We'll get all the good ones together and burn some discs. The cruise continues tomorrow with a sail to Wallace Island, Conover Cove. Surely no internet from there so we'll probably check in again on Tuesday from Maple Bay. Wish us fair winds! My hatchboards fit so tight that I was worried that the eight coats of Epifanes would be too much. I would be careful coating with epoxy, which will increase thickness quickly. The Epifanes alone gives a beautiful, mirror-like finish. The boards get a little scuffed on the edges, but there's no chipping. I have experimented with a few different brands. Out of all that I tried, I found that Helmsman band works the best. I redid my H260 and H31 and both showed no wear or fading even after three years. And better yet, you can get it at either Home Depot or Lowes. Comes in a green can. I highly recommend it. Michael, M-17 #652, Pepperjack www.svpepperjack.net

I used West System GFlex. Comes in small containers and gives around 15 min working time, sets quickly and is easy to use. It's clear, with a slight yellow tinge.
