New to me M7-11

Happened to stop at a garage sale in Lincoln City on the Oregon Coast and saw a lapstrake dingy leaned against a storage shed. Asked about it and ended up taking it home with me. Hull number 60, built 02/74. The hull looks good. It had red bottom paint to the waterline at some point, though it has mostly worn off. The centerboard is in great shape, the rudder has a chunk out of it, but fixable I think. Has two sails. The original is limp, but the other still has some life left in it. The mast and boom are clean and not bveat up. No oars though it has oarlocks. The teak rub rails and seats were coated, badly, with varnish, so that will have to come off. All-in-all a good find I think I needed another project. Don M15-248 Dream Catcher M711-16 ???

YAHOOOOOO!!! I love it when everything comes together. Those double reef points and small jib are well worth on that kind of day. We made it to our destination, the bell buoy a few miles outside the harbor.. I decided to go forward to take the jib off the deck since we were going to turn around and slog to windard. I didn’t want anything that would impede our windward progress. With this done, we started the upwind journey at about 2.5 knots. Did I say I hate sailing under main alone? Anyway, I decided to put my 70% “storm jip” up. It took a little adjusting but we made it work. With this, we were making 4-5 knots to windward. The seas had built up a nasty chop so we were pounding our way through it, taking lots of spray off the bow. In the gusts we were overpowered, but I played the main and kept the boat upright. We took some water over the combings a couple of times but nothing too worrying. When we made it back to the harbor, we decided to do it again! The winds had dropped by then to 15-20 with gust to 25. 6 hours of sailing and about 24 miles later we were docked again. All through it, my daughter had a great time. When I asked her what she liked the most, she said the sailing, the wind and the waves. The Potter Cruiser Challenge? Be There!

My apologies. I realized I had the wrong date for Cruiser Challenge X. The Potter Yachter's Cruiser Challenge X in Monterey will be July 25 - 26. I plan to sail down from Santa Cruz on the 24th and would still enjoy company. In answer to your question Bill, I took 4th last year, getting a bullet in the first race, I think 4th or 5th in the second, and after a miserable start in the third, maybe mid-pack. In all honesty, if I can improve on last years finish, I will be quite pleased with myself. Very blustery conditions last year complete with collisions, one dismasting and the Peep Hens heading for harbour early. I am hoping for a little lighter breeze this year as it would be more fun for group as a whole. I finally got out on the weekend with my new Elliot Pattison main and 85 percent jib. The main looks very good and is a big improvement on my very well worn, old Kern. It was not very windy all weekend (4-8kts) on Monterey Bay so the new jib didn't get much of a chance to work, but in the few puffs that came up I could tell it will really shine in the more typical, summer conditions here. We have a nice ramp here in Santa Cruz along with lots of otters, sea lions, a few dolphin and the occasional jumpback whale. C'mon down!

Thanks for the good advice Connie. At this point we're going to meet at Greenville. It's midpoint (450 miles) between Frank, in Ontario and me. I found some sites that list a number of ramps. They also mention something about boat permits. Do you know anything about this and fishing licences and where to buy them? Was the ramp you used at Rockwood a public facility or was it privately owned by the cottage you stayed in? Thanks, Rick

Rudder post

Gary Valetti, I didn't understand the question about the rudder post and a 8 foot piece of aluminum-bronze 5/8" rod. How could that be used as a rudder post? Is this about creating a new pintle pin that the rudder rides up and down on in the original configuration? Moosehead Lake Cruise

Bluebird Frank Durant and I are planning a cruise on Moosehead Lake, Maine from July 10-19. If anyone is interested in joining us let me know. Also, we'd be interested in any first hand experiences on the lake and some nice secure launch sites. We don't really have any preferences. rudder post

M boaters, Looking to get a new rudder post, any ideas? I purchased a long piece of aluminum bronze ( I think that's what Jerry used on the original M17) but I'm having a hard time finding a machine shop with a lathe long enough to handle it. I think it's 8 feet and 5/8 diameter. I think it needs to be 1/2 in diameter.
