Bob, I was suprised how well the boat handled in the strong winds. Not much weather helm until you turn down wind and get that long boom out to the side. The sailmaker is Doug Fowler and he did a supurb job on those little jibs. On the way back the wind picked up closer to 30 kts in the gusts so I rolled up the outer jib and took one reef in the main and she just took off into the wind like it was blowing 15. When I approached the dock I rolled up the staysail but stalled out short of the dock. I tried to sail up wind with just the main but was doing poorly. I unrolled that little 25 sq foot staysail and again she just took off. Amazing little sail. I did keep the boat overcanvassed for the pictures. I really should have had a reef but it was too much fun. John, Actually I have only had the boat out twice. The day the video was shot I pulled 3 wired out of the shroud due to damage when she was a sloop. Since I got the replacements from Jerry the weather hasn't been cooperative. I looked through the photos and saw that your boats are on Easy Loader trailers. ?I have one for my M 15 also. ?Have you had any stress cracks or other problems trailering without the keel being supported? ?I am wondering if I need to add keel support. ?I would rather not because I can remove the centerboard by jacking up the frame of the trailer. water in the cockpit

Hi gang, Every boat has a distinctive personality (one reason I love them), and I am discovering my 17 bit by bit. I got in a big blow yesterday, and enough water backed into the cockpit to give me cold feet had the water not been warm. The drain hoses have devices that might be one-way valves half way through the aft locker, and I am wondering if other owners have found that these keep all the water out. If so, I will have to take the things apart and find the problem. A final, if not as elegant (or safe) a solution, would be to use expanding rubber plugs in the cockpit openings, but I cannot find one of the proper size in my catalogs. Has anyone found a source? A big old soft rubber cork would probably work, but I am afraid a surge might pop one out. Another thing I noticed was a bit of water around the fuel tank in the aft locker. I assume a following wave took a whack high on the transom and shoved water past the fuel hose; has anyone experienced this and come up with an elegant solution? The longish keel on the M15 tracks pretty well for comfortable single handing and works well with the gaff cutter. Hi Jerry, I've owned two M15's over the years: one made by you in the late 1980's and one made by Bob Eeg a couple of years ago (which I still have). With both boats, invariably the first comments regarding the boats that I would get from strangers would be compliments of the lapstrakes. I don't think the comments were aimed at their functional aspects, just the beauty of the simulated wood siding. As to apportioning length, I think a 6' cockpit would be a good thing. Although it would allow more owners to sleep in the cockpit and permit either more, or larger, cockpit lockers, its main value, in my opinion, would be to allow more elbow room for the two or three sailors who would occupy it for sailing and, more importantly, permit the helmsman to sit further forward to better balance the boat. Adding those 7" to the cockpit would still allow a lengthening of the cabin for more room (especially sitting headroom) and storage below if the boat were 16' or 16' and a couple of inches. A mast raising system which does not rely on strength and/or balance would also be nice, as would a forward deck hatch for ventilation and an optional self-tending jib for singlehanding.
