Hello, I am now preparing my M-17 for the first real sail of the year, and I came up with two questions. 1) Does anyone know what is the thickness of the battens for the mainsail? One of my battens is missing, and I ordered new ones, but the ones I ordered is 3/16" thick. Now by measuring mine they seem thinner, perhaps 1/8 at most. Does anyone know? 2) I have seen some people install a teak mat on the bottom of the cockpit, and I would have liked to install one myself. I can probably get a friend of mine to build one for me, but I was wondering how do people keep it down in rough seas? I wouldn't want to drill into the cockpit floor, but I don't see any other solution. Thanks, Andrei. 1982 M-17 Seaweed

Folks, To those of you who wrote 'nice comments' Thanks! In the interest of full disclosure - I must state that I have and make use of (albeit very short use) an Evinrude Yachtwin 4 hp 2 stroke. This engine runs maybe 10 to 15 minutes/year over the last ten years. I will continue to make use of it, as it is kept in tuned condition by a qualified OMC Master mechanic (certainly not ME)annually. I will purchase a 4 stroke or electric if when needed. Additionally - I have never owned a boat that I sailed with anti-fouling paint on the boat. I have removed it from some - but do not care to 'deal with it'. I dislike fouled bottoms AND anti-fouling paint -obviously I store my boats dry. I have NO desire to own any boat that would be wet sailed. A J 105 in a dock hoist would be nice! I suspect most folks putting on ablatives got the idea from reading the West Marine catalog, which shows that hard bottom paints lose effectiveness when out of the water. They say ablative's don't. And are "self scrubbing". They might be on a powerboat, but sailboats don't get up enough speed. I know on our fresh water lake, the enemy is algae. Leave the boat in the water for a month and she will grow a beard faster than me. When they pull some of the bigger boats after being in the water a year or so, no hard growth, but there may be an inch or more of algae slime being drug around. Bottom paint....even with slime blockers.....doesn't seem to help all that much. For these fresh water boats, no paint at all is probably the best solution. Folks, This is for ALL who are contemplating Anti-Fouling Paint Choices (ironic heh?) THIS IS NOT DIRECTED AT ANY ONE PERSON in particular - hell, I am here to offend all equally. (maybe, LOL) I need to make a comment, an ass of myself, or have my say. Shoot- I'm going for the TRIFECTA! Please let us think here for a minute. How many of us like clams, scallops,crabs, oysters, redfish, tuna, bluefish, salmon etc.? I like to eat all of those from time to time. I even like to just look at them in the water! I really would appreciate it, if the freaking bottom paint containing metals and biocide (rhymes with pesticide) was NOT FLAKING off the bottom of a boat to poison the rest of the animals in the sea, so that our boats can have a little less 'fuzz, scum, hair or whatever grows in your neck of the woods' on it's bottom! Please think about it. Hard paints leach the poison out over time, soft ones flake off and frequently have a very short usable life-span, and require another application. You CANNOT scrub ablative paints with much success. Lets try and give the beautiful places we sail a chance to breathe! Maybe because a lot of life is out of our control this 'week' -economy, political tensions between countries, people losing their jobs and houses. It would be nice - by acting responsibly - to help make the world a better place - if for no one other than yourself - the next time you go sailing! And by doing that , it makes a better place for your neighbor who enjoys the beach, or fishing, or surfing. Happy people make for a good place to live. Happy animals make for a good place to live. Yeah- I am 57 years old- a hippy - and 'TRY' to live in an eco-friendly manner - I am FAR from being even good at it - but I try. If you have to poison the place that you love to spend your "quality time" - try and have a 'minimal impact'. I hear chili peppers makes a good biocide! Hard paints don't slough off, try paints with lower levels of biocides, check for % of metals, toxins -' yeah Festus - that there Killer X3000 Paint is 40% cyanide - that 'll keep that dern slime off the bottom' . Let me share with you what I have learned about gel cells. My organization put a new facility in service in 2005. Soon afterwards our insurance carrier began a process that forced us to dispose of several gel cell battery banks and replace them with wet cells (lead acid). These banks primarily provide emergency lubrication for about $100 million of rotating equipment, with maybe double that amount in lost revenue if the equipment had to be replaced (revenue not profit). Everyone thought gel cells were a great idea, but no one talked to the insurance people. The carrier reported that actual life of gel cells in an industrial setting was something like seven years, where as life expectancy was predicted to be 20 to 25 years. These cells are far more pampered and scrutinized than those in the average recreational application. The banks are stationary, in a stable temperature environment, monitored on a 24 x 7 basis and fed by commercial grade chargers. A computerized log of maintenance and testing activities is kept. I do an annual internal audit of records and we are subject to an external audit every third year. They may supply power three or four times a year for an hour or so if at all. Hi GO, You can rant to me anytime you wish my friend, I find it quite entertaining and I like your sense of humor. Crap in the water is a sore spot for me as well. I will not be recoating bottom paint on my M17 in the future as it sits on her trailer most of the time anyway. I have a barrier coat under the bottom paint. I personally become dismayed when I see the oil slick behind an old 2 stroke outboard. Those can go away anytime soon, especially the ones that have a 15:1 mix ratio!
