Maiden Voyage of our M17

We set sail on the maiden voyage of our M17, Excursive, this past weekend. We put in at Jackson Lake, WY and had a wonderful 2 day sail on the lake with the Tetons in the back ground. We live within several hours of Jackson Lake so will sail there on weekends until Yellowstone Lake opens for overnight stays. I have several questions for the group. 1. Concerning the front stay and jib, we hank on our jib, it falls short by 12" or so from reaching the top of the mast. I was wondering what others have done to length the tack cringle attachment. This is where the jib attached at the bow deck point. 2. I need to adjust the main sail boom so the sail does not fall out during reefing or taking down the main sail. Any ideas? On our past sail boat, Nimble 20, the boom was fixed to a point on the mast and this was not an issue. In a strong wind, it's a bit unsettling to have the main sail come out of the track. 3. When we were out Saturday we noticed another Montgomery 15 or 17, to far away to id, motoring on the lake. If anyone has info on the owner we would like to know. 4. We have the burp issue as well. 5. As far as accommodations, my wife and I slept in the v-berth and my son, 19 and 6'4, slept in the quarter berth. We all had plenty of room. New boat, first night out there's always plenty of room, we'll see as the summer progresses. Over all the boat is great to sail and handle. Sailing central cal lakes

In response to Carlos , Lake Cachuma is a great place to as long as you don't miss swimming. It has a brand new launch ramp good camping and lots of wind. Also you can reserve a slip so as not to launch each day. Santa Barbara harbor has a great launch ramp and nice sailing also with sea conditions close to most lakes almost any day of the year. Further north is Santa Margarita lake also a no swim lake much smaller then Cachuma but nice also has nice camp areas. Also in the area are Nascimento and San Antonio lakes however both are jet ski and wake boarders hangouts so not as sail friendly. We have sailed most areas around here an would be glade to share any information with you, and depending on when you plan to sail here join you with our M17 Sloop John B. How to Improve Cockpit Drain on early M17

Question for Jerry (and any others that would like to add thoughts/ideas)-- Do you think the idea of improving the cockpit drain on a 1979 M17 in the manner described below has merit? Install a 1 1/2" plastic through hull (vertically) at aft end of cockpit, just above OEM drain, and install another plastic 1 1/2" through hull in transom (slightly below first through hull installed) and connect the two through hulls with reinforced hose. A one way Whale valve would be installed in middle of hose run. This valve is to stop water from backing up into cockpit. The transom through hull would be above water line, thus removing the need for the below water line OEM through hull. I am considering one through in aft-center of cockpit, as this is the area that has a low spot for water to be removed and where OEM drain is located. Two through hulls may be installed (one at each aft corner of cockpit) for twice the volume of water removal. With this installation, some water would not be removed, as the low spot is at center of aft cockpit. Thoughts?

I have a similar arrangement on my M=17 without the check valves. With weight in the stern, water backs into the cockpit, which I solve by installing corks in the drain holes when more than one person in the cockpit. Need to remember to remove them when leaving the boat however. Thank you Murray and Rick, Rick, I have heard that the M-15 can be lifted from the chain plates. I am a bit apprehensive about it - they are mounted to the to rail, which is just an overlapping fiberglass fiberglass lip, and there isn't a whole lot of backing. I assume that most M-15s are constructed the same way, but mine doesn't look as if it's all that strong in that regard. I must say that I am scarcely an expert on evaluating the strenght of fiberglass. Murray - if you could send a picture, or a more detailed description of the lifting bridal that you use, it would be much appreciated. I take it that no one is worried about the compressive force across the the beam of the boat that would be exerted if lifting on a sling or by the chain plates. According to him, they are more than strong enough and being located amidships the boat is balanced when lifting from those two points. Last I looked, I have the oldest 17 in our registry at hull number 32 and recently purchased it in Washington - drove in excess of a thousand miles as well. I agree with Tim on this - a well found Monty gets bought at the price you are willing to pay. I paid my own premium but have no regrets since it was in good condition with newer sails, new standing and running rigging, new CF 500 snap furling, radio, auto this and that.... Bought a new trailer because the original was not up to muster. It has brakes which negate some of the issues around tow vehicle capacity from the earlier threads. Like all vintage boats, they need some attention and have their strengths and weaknesses. In my northern BC mountains there are numerous types of toys - quads, snowmobiles, power boats and a few sailboats too. At middle age, I figure that you should envision the life you want and get at it. For us, the Montgomery 17 is an excellent choice to be on the water. I don't have a web site developed but can send pics and experiences for others to ponder. The information contained in our group websites and a knowledge gained about what Lyle Hess designed dating back some 25 years also convinced me to get one. IMHO the M boats have the nicest looks and sailing properties in the trailerable field. A great resource for novice sailors

I have notice that many of the questions being asked are common to all sailboats. A great resource for questions of this type is "The West Advisor". The West Marine Catalog (both hard copy and online) has sidebars telling how to choose and use most of the parts and equipment they sell. For example, the catalog has a half page on how to set up a Boom Vang at the end of the boom vang and attachment hardware pages. If you order a few things online, a big phone book size catalog will appear in your mailbox and it is a great resource for folks of all experience levels who are upgrading or restoring their Montys. The online site is at www.westmarine.com. I have been dealing with the West Marine folks for many years and they were a great source for parts when I lived in Germany (working for the US Army as a High School teacher) and was restoring a Hardy 20 cabin cruiser for use on the German waterways. Ron M17 #14 Griselda BTW: I am a lifelong sailor (56 years) but there was no really good sailing area near me in Bavaria so we bought a motor boat. (we did tow a 9 foot sailingy dinghy) Cruising the rivers and canals in "Bullforg II", our little power cruiser, was a real educational experience. The European waterways pass through the oldest and most historic towns and like anywhere else, boating people are wonderful. It was fun bit it is also great to be retired back "home" where I can have a "fleet" of boats and my private dock 120 feet from the back door. Reconfiguring the Main Sheet...

Lou, A simpler solution may be to move the main sheet tackle to the aft end of the boom. I have done this, as well as others and I'd say it works just as well as the stock configuration. I like that the bridge deck and companionway are clear for sitting and access. One consideration whenever moving the main sheet aft is that it doesn't encouraged the helmsman to sit closer to the stern. A major consideration when sailing an M15 is keeping the transom from "squatting". Therefore the crew should sit as far forward as possible, even to the extent of extending the tiller so the helmsman can sit right up against the cabin bulkhead. Boom attachment hardware

One way of attaching a boom vang or preventer to the boom is to use a "boom Bail" as illustrated on page 1238 of the 2008 West Marine annual catalog. The listings even give the size of fastner needed to through bolt it to the boom. My M17 uses a "boom Bail" on the boom and an eye at the base of the mast (attached to a piece of aluminum tube in the track by self tapping screws. The vang tackle has a pelican hook at either end so it can be quickly removed or move to the perforated toe rail as a preventer.
