Now see, this is what happens when you buy a Montgomery boat and start using it without ever watching another owner set theirs up! Wow I feel dumb and dumber. We both have scratched our heads over the hole in the rudder at times, and also we have made comments to each other about this weird strap and cleat on the transom. I sorta assumed it was for hanging a 6 pack of beer in the water to chill or something. I even removed the line hanging from the cleat after it fouled the outboard prop one time. 2 + 2 = 5 Well thanks Bob! rudder question

Hi guys, In the past we have been intalling the non-tilt factory rudder (2005 model I guess) on our M17 after the boat is in the water so that the rudder does not scrape when launching. My wife noticed that the rudder can slide up about a foot on it's three hinges, and I was wondering if any of you launch with it pre-installed but tied somehow so that it is at the top of it's hinge travel (if that makes sense). It is quite the pain to insert the cotter pin at the bottom of the rudder hinge rod because this is several inches below water when the boat has been launched. I was actually thinking of drilling a new hole for a higher cotter pin until my wife mentioned we might be able to pre-install the rudder during setup. Thanks for any tips, Rick M17-635 Eidolon

Boom-Vang question

On the 17, does the jam cleat end on the boom-vang attach to the boom or to the rail on the cockpit floor. Really enjoyed the videos. I was studying your reefing and lines, besides just enjoying the sail, to compare to the spartan and worn-out systems we have. (we have to sometimes "hand close" the cam cleats, for instance.) Your new tender looks identical to our Walker Bay dinghy: http://www.walkerbay.com/products/original_walkerbay8.php Does yours have the faux lapstrake sides and a wheel on the keel? Ours doesn't say "Walker Bay" on the sides, like the one on their site, and we have the one with inflatable sides. My inlaws have one without. Walker Bay dinghy

We bought the Walker Bay dinghy several years ago to use with the 22' power boat we had then. We just towed the dinghy, then used it for beach access. We haven't got far enough with Ceto to plan beach outings, but will probably tow the WB to use in the same way. It definitely wouldn't fit on the deck, especially our dinghy model with the inflated tubes. We used to use our halyards to load our aluminum skiff onto the deck of our large sailboat years ago. The goofy little keel wheel actually does help sometimes. It rows pretty well too. Thanks for the compliment! One thing I forgot to mention on the site about that 48' aluminum sailboat is that it had the weirdest feature I've ever heard of when we first bought it: the diesel cook/heat stove vented out of the mast! We'd have people come up to us, alarmed, telling us "Smoke is coming from the top of your mast!" It was even more dramatic when my dad converted the stove to burn wood... After several years though, one bad day, the heat partly melted the base of the mast, and then my dad was inspired to replace the mast, put in a normal stovepipe, and then converted the whole sail system to a typical Marconi mainsail, losing the gaff rigged main, kept the two foresails, but took out the rollerfurling. Joe, I went with the 20" longshaft. I think the 25" would drag in the tilted up position, which is no good while sailing. The 20" should clear completely.

You can find dimensions for Montgomery 17 sails on the Sailrite web site. It will be in the sail quote section. They show charts for several sails for the 17 as well as pricing for kits or completed sails.
