Jerry, The Sunfish Class has a Masters and something like a Super Masters Fleets! Even awards for the Ladies! I am fond of sailing mine when the 'breeze' is "on" and full tilt upwind planing is the order of the day! My family has another one in FL, and they are situated such that when the 'breezes' come up, it is a broad reach over to the other side of the Bay, and a close reach back! Blasting planing both ways! Additionally,I have never been confused with an adult acting being. Ask my wife and kids. Sunfish are for fun in a blow!! And now for the 'string pullers' -the class currently allows outhaul, cunningham, vang, Jens rig, JC strap, AND MAINSHEET! Whew! it is getting to be a complicated little craft! You are more than welcome to sail my 'fish any time you would like - You are at least "this tall to ride" LOL. GO. LB/GF! M-17 # 316a 'that ain't bad gelcoat -it's "patina"! Solar vents

I have installed the (very expensive) Nicro solar powered vents (or intake -- comes with two easily switched props for in or out) -- in my first M-15, then my Cape Dory Typhoon, then in my old wooden Cape Cod Catboat, and now in my current M-15. They do not make enough breeze to cool you, but I like the continuous change of air to keep the boat from getting that musty smell. I also have installed the smallest Radio Shack muffin (brushless) fan in the aft end of the starboard bunk locker, hole from from the forward end of that compartment into the middle compartment (which I leave without the screws holding it down and use as an additional storage locker), thence through holes in the front and back of the port under-bunk locker. Now all three compartments stay ventilated and sweet. Unfortunately Nicro's warranty seems designed to expire shortly before the fan gets noisy bearings, or the finite-life solar cell expires. Supposed to be 80 degrees or so on Sat and 85 on Sunday. There might even be some wind on the sound. Considering it is June and we have been sleeping with 2 blankets at night, I think this qualifies as some mighty fine sailing weather! Anyway, we are planning to go to Port of Everett and launch our M17 on Saturday, so I hope we see one of you on the water. Rick M17-635 Eidolon

I have had Beckson and other manufacturers deck plates installed on a couple of boats - They are strong enough to support standing - pushing (hiking) in the 4" versions. Only problem I have seen is when you get up to the jumbo (6'+ sizes) and they are exposed to mucho UV. If someone was 'really bored - they could laminate a small Dorade box for the vent and keep it in place 24/7. A great winter project there. Please think 20 times before cutting a 4" hole in your boat. If you use the right size hole saw (recommended over saber saw type) they are nearly as strong as the deck they replace. I am installing a 4"er with 'booty bag' in my Sunfish tomorrow. Allows me access to hiking straps, daggerboard trunk,storage and I guess I will have ventilation 'down below' ! LOL. GO. LB/GF! West Marine might be a great resource for information on maintenance, rigging and all things boating, but they should be avoided like the plague when it comes to making any purchases for your boating needs. Shop West Marine then go purchase at "Defender" or some other like source and you'll see what I'm talking about. By the way, I'm a former West Marine Associate, so I have first hand knowledge of their price mark-ups. On my previous M 15 I installed a Nicro Water Trap with a Nicro low profile flexible cowl. It allows air in but keep rain water out. I removed it while sailing and put the insert in. When I anchor out in one of the many beautiful and secluded coves on Beaver Lake in the summer, I try to get as far up in the cove as I can, then secure the rode to a stern cleat. With a typical summer high pressure system over many states, there is no general breeze. However, night time cooling has the land cooling with radiation, and of course the water temperature remains stable. The cooler air is heavier and flows down the land and into the cove. With my stern facing the gentle and much cooler flow of air, I enjoy the benefits of Mother Nature's air conditioning. Ventilation

Phil, I struggled with the same problem. I considered Nico vents, added opening ports and a hatch. I ended up installing the smallest Bomar hatch (11" I think) in the foredeck. It provides good ventilation and some additional light in what is normally a dark forepeak. I now sleep with my head to the bow and directly under the hatch. This allows me to breath the freshest air and if it rains, I'm right there to close the hatch. I'm sure this is not the only solution, but I would do it again.
