Inspection plates in the stern seat

Hi Bert Don't know if someone's already answered your question or not... My M17 came with a pair of round inspection ports at the stern, fairly close together. They haven't shown any signs of weakening the class... no stress cracks nearby or anything like that. it's possible that the round shape helps, that's the strongest arrangement for an opening. But I've often wished that I could find a rectangular inspection port to join the two into one opening for greater access, but I'd need a somewhat odd size to span the gap between them. If it were me, I'd install a GOOD rectangular inspection port. Buy two and keep one in the garage... after about six or eight years, the sunlight will take their toll and start to weaken them, and you'll want a replacement. Whenever I do this sort of thing, the one size that I manage to pick is always the size that the manufacturer discontinues. My wife and I can't fit down the starboard side in order to fasten the backing plate, fender washers, and nuts which will hold the ladder. If I install an inspection plate in the transom, will it weaken the boat? Should I install one in the center or a total of two, each on the transom above the seats? Thank you in advance, Bert Felton

"Hello the Montgomery"

Back in 2000, right after I bought my 1976 M17 and hadn't even done enough work on her yet to get her in the water, I was hanging around the waterfront on Pend Oreille Lake in northern Idaho. I hadn't even seen another Montgomery yet, but wonder of wonders, a M15 came sailing by. I called out "Hello the Montgomery!" My wife was mortified. How uncouth! She still teases me about it. Fortunately, the sailor was less sensitive about strangers yelling across the lake at him, and he sailed over for a nice chat. Last weekend, as I was sailing back to our marina on Pend Oreille Lake, a voice called out behind me "Hello the Montgomery!" I had to grin as I hove to, and a power boat pulled up to visit. Turned out to be a guy who had just moved up from California and used to own a M17 flat deck named Chunky Dory, but had sold her a while back down in L.A. That boat name rang a bell, so I wrote to Mark Esovedo, who I've been corresponding with in regard to one of his modifications on his flush deck Amy, and sure enough! It's the same boat. Small world, huh? There really isn't any need to be snarky. It's very un-Montgomery. I'm very well aware of what's on the net; I make a good living there. I've just not read posts from folks who are writing about taking delivery of their new (as opposed to new to them) Montgomerys. I've gotten the sense that if you can't find a used 15 somewhere in the country, you can't have one. And I've twice emailed the Montgomery site, using its own "contact" form, and received no response to questions having to do with my recommissioning of my 15. So where better to ask, than here?
