If you want the 17 and it's within your means, and if you know something about trailering and wheel bearing health and repair and wiring of lights and so on, go for it. Utah's not far, in dog years. If you're healthy and feel comfortable with the rigging, do it. (It's not a featherweight boat, though. Make sure your towing vehicle is a match for it AND for the ramps that you intend to use. That said, the 15 floats off the trailer so fast, you have to make sure somebody's got a dock line in hand before you forget. I love my 15 but if my life could expand to take in an M17, I do it without a thought. Doesn't fit my domestically awkward situation right now. (Wish it did -- at least I'd have a comfortable place to sleep, and fry an egg. But you'll have to wait for my bittersweet novel in order to get the details.) Ahoy Slippers I can't tell you how excited I was when UPS dropped off my new 150 Genoa. I got over it right away the minute I opened the West Marine catalogue and added upt the cost for the track, cars, blocks and sheets. More than the sail. Where are you skippers buying your hardware? Any less expensive than West Marine? Maybe I will just rig the new Genoa as a flat sail to shade the cockpit while on the mooring at Catalina. I installed a "slam hatch" from Defender in the aft end of the starboard cockpit seat. Ladder installation easy then. Now provides access for the control of my "inboard electric drive," too. Email me off line for photos. Do it now! You can't do it any younger… John R. Butler, theoldcat(a)cox.net

Thinking of buying a Montgomery 15

Greetings: I currently live in Sacramento, CA. I own and sail (or at least try to) a C-15. It is a fun boat, but the wife hates the tippy feel to the boat, and am having problems finding crew at times. Saw a Montgomery 15 parked by the lake, and since been doing research. Have heard a lot of good things about the boat. I did find one for sale, but it is listed as a Montgomery 15 Guppy. Looking at the pictures, it appears to have a smooth hull, not a lapstrake hull. It is definetly not a Guppy 13, and looks to have a retractable keel. My main question is, could this be a true Montgomery 15 or is could it be something else? The owner does not know much about it. Any advice is sincerely appreciated. Thanks- Rob

I have ordered wire and Hi-Mod terminals for my Flicka as well as running rigging, and anchor rode from Rigging Only and have been very happy with both the products and prices. 1) Actually, it's only 1/10 the price you're seeing, if you parse it out over the 10 years that you're going to enjoy using the genoa and "the right installation the first time." (The second installation, to do it right, is the one that really gets expensive.) 2) "What is 'Messing about in boats?'" isn't a correct Jeopardy response to the prompt, "Taking up this activity will get your recreational expenses under control." Oh yeah! Repairing core rot rates right up there with stripping bottom paint on the fun scale. Besides the foredeck, I had rot behind the chainplates and under the teak guides for the sliding hatch. The rot in the cabin top I was able to dry out and repair with penetrating epoxy. Behind the chainplates I drilled large enough holes to dig out the rot and filled it in with epoxy putty, but the foredeck was just mush, like Bones'. I hired a "professional" who was such a hack he nearly ruined my boat. I had to hire someone else to redo the work the first guy botched, and even after that I found hollow spots that I had a heck of a time filling with epoxy until all the various leaks were plugged up. But, hey, Monty's are worth it! A restored classy old M boat is a beautiful sight.
