Neil here in Northfield Mn. Thought I might ask for some advice before I attack my boat M15 #374 which I bought in SD last year. The boat had not been in the water for several years; after reading about problems thru the list server and inspecting the shoal keel/centerboard I filled in gaps in the centerboard trunk,repaired the aft edge of the centerboard which had a chunk out of it,and reinforced the leading edge of the centerboard all with west sys epoxy and thru it the water so I could get some sailing in. When I trailered the boat back home I found that the bouncing on the front trailer roller had knocked a chunk out of the leading edge of the centerboard. I've inspected the area and sanded as much off the top of the centerboard back by the rope hole that I thought I could reasonably remove.There still is about 3/8" to 1/2" that hangs below the centerboard trunk when the centerboard is pulled up especially toward the aft end. I am concerned that I don't repeat last year's occurrence.I was going to epoxy some wood to the centerboard trunk in the area that the trailer roller contacts the trunk at. I also epoxied the centerboard pivot pin in last year.What do you all think? Neil Hull #274 M15

Possible? Yes. Comfortable? No. Tried it once. That was enough. A M17 is comfortable for one, "cozy" for two, "longest night of my life" for three. I think the weather wasn't quite nice enough for Blake Island to be super crowded last Saturday, but I can see how it would be a popular place in the middle of summer. So the boat stuck in the sand (named Scooter) had called out a securite or pan pan? Amusing, because the coast guard was holding a vessel safety check at the docks on blake island and there were at least 3 coast guard boats and 15+ members of the guard there. We did see them pull up alongside Scooter several times to check on her until the tide lifted and she sailed free into the marina. Also amusing was a little event when Scooter was docking. Some lady on the boat had put the loop of the dock line around one ear of the boat cleat and during their manuevering it slid off (paying heed to the sailing creed that you always help other sailors, I was there to help hold the bow anyway). The owner? of the boat said "no, you don't put it aournd that ear of the cleat, you put it around the other one! ... :-) I thought about mentioning that there is this neat little space between the mounting legs of the boat cleat that you could theoretically pass the dock line loop through and then back over BOTH ears...but I didn't say anything. If you can afford a 44+ foot nearly new yacht, I figure you must know what you are doing. One day I hope to see SCRED (and others) on the water. trip to Gray's Harbor, WA

We are taking our M17-635 Eidolon to Gray's Harbor this weekend to experience a bit of that part of Washington state. We have never been, but it looks like a very interesting place to sail. We are going to stay/put in at the Westport Marina at the Port of Gray's Harbor, which is just across the mouth of the harbor from Ocean Shores. Probably will stick to sailing inside the harbor, going over to Hoquiam and up to Ocean shores. I guess if the conditions are OK we could duck out into the *real* Pacific just to say we have taken our Monty there :-p Again, I would love to see any of you there, but I realize it is rather a long drive from Seattle (about 2.5 hours). We did go out on Saturday from Elliot Bay and sailed to Blake Island. There was a minus 2 foot tide at around 2pm, and a much larger (44 foot?) sailboat was stuck in the sand at the entrance to the state park marina at the Tillicum Village. We smirked a bit to ourselves as we sailed our M17 around her and into the marina, where we moored at the state run docks (a good reason to get the $60 year pass for state docks and bouys). Since we have never done the touristy Tillicum Village salmon dinner and performance thing, we did that and really were stuffed afterward (buy a loaf of the dark bread there, it is REALLY good). Steve, I see your point re: the sign up for Yahoo. However, it just seemed a fairly simple way to satisfy the request for an owners list and nothing else. The C-brats site is awesome, but way beyond my ability to set up and moderate and also and more importantly, I did not want to appear as though I was trying to replace or compete with any of the established Monty sites, like this one. I hope that you will "jump though the hoops" even though they are a little inconvenient but if you don't want to I understand. But...here's the good news.....You are a Monty owner! I agree with Sean and Howard in regard to the "tail wagging the dog" and the ability to stop issues. I've experienced both and it was not fun. I towed a pop-up camper for too many years with a 6 cylinder, 4 liter Cherokee. Now most people would say, "that seems like a good match". Well, it was terrible. Every time the tail started wagging it would oscillate and get worst unless I reduced speed a lot. Then I would realize that Jeep just didn't have the capacity to quickly stop that pop-up. I concluded that it was the worst tow vehicle every made. I now tow a 5000 pound camp trailer that has brakes and stabilizer bars with a Tundra. It is so stress free that I forget it's back there. Of course my M15 tows without issue with this vehicle. One last point, I learned from some seasoned camp trailer towers that filling the water tanks (provided they're up in the front of the trailer) greatly increases stability. Conversely full black and grey water tanks (in the rear) decrease stability. It's nice to have a tongue that's light enough to pick up and attack the hitch, but if you tow with light tongue weight your trailer will probably fishtail. So it's nice to have a vehicle that will pull your trailer up those long hills, but it's more important to have a vehicle that will safely pull your load down those hills. Rick M15 #337 Bluebird
