I don't know the facts (those may or may not come out at trial -- that's often a crap shoot), but aside from charging the guy at the sailboat's helm, the story posted doesn't say the powerboat operator won't be charged, only that he hasn't yet. A failure of such charges would indeed be a travesty. There remains, though, a problem for the inebriated helmsman (and I don't know his physical condition as a fact, either, just something that's reported.) If I had to recreate the argument the D.A. must have made, it was probably that, even given the powerboat operator's apparent recklessness and it's all but inevitable outcome, the people in command of the sailboat had the last clear chance to avert the disaster. No, not by getting out of the way, which wouldn't likely have been possible, but possibly by having the presence of mind to shine a flashlight on the mainsail, or directly at the boat. The D.A. would likely have said that, but for the intoxication, that opportunity would have still been in play. It wasn't much of a chance, but it wasn't tried. Would a jury buy it? I doubt it, but a jury put O.J. back on the California streets. Nonetheless, "BWI" -- boating while intoxicated -- has become a flashpoint for attention across the country. If they're pursuing it as aggressively in California as in Minnesota -- where alcohol accounts for a number of boating accidents and fatalities annually -- it may explain the public show of cracking down. What's missing here seems to be a considered exercise of prosecutorial discretion -- in both the charges and the "non-charges." A prosecutor's hands aren't tied. Somebody's putting the screws in on this, but of course we don't know who. Lots of conjecture, and perhaps rightly so. That being said, I've never forgotten the practice of a senior partner under whom I worked, who abstained 100% at all functions -- not always easy for a member of the bar -- if he would be behind a wheel later. Not even a beer or sip of champagne -- and he certainly wasn't a teetotaler. He wasn't worried about causing an accident. But he knew that if some schmuck plowed into him, his blood-alcohol reading would become part of the accident report. And that is never good. On the M15 I use the Genoa inside when beating and close hauled (depending on wind speed) and outside on any reach and below. Phil, I have an M-15 and have gear hammocks installed. Bob Eeg instructed me to cut small blocks of teak, glue them to the bulkheads with 5200 (using tape to hold the blocks in place until the 5200 cured), and screw the hooks into the teak blocks. I did that several years ago, and the teak blocks, hooks, and gear hammocks are holding perfectly. I also used that same approach -- gluing teak blocks the bulkhead -- for a lamp and weather station, too. Full disclosure -- I called Bob and learned of the gluing blocks to the bulkhead approach only after I attempted to use small screws to screw the hooks directly into the bulkhead. I screwed through the hull on my brand new boat, and said there must be a better way. And, there was! Sincerely, John M-15 (628)

As an old Travel Trailerer, I full support your comments on tow vheicles sizes and brake requirements. The M-15 and 17s are a piece of cake with a full size Surburban etc, if you can fine gas money, ha. By the way, as old M-15 owner of the 70's ( owning one of Jerry M's originals), I am now retired and looking for a good oldie from Jerry M's Shop - If you hear of one, please give me a heads-up, would appreciate it more that I could say. Rigging

As I said in my introductory message, my wife and I are taking up sailing late in life. We need some help with the running rigging. From the pictures on the web site, it looks like the topping lift is shackled to the end of the boom, goes up to where? And then to where? Are the jib sheets run inside or outside the shrouds? What is the line on the front of the mast that is cleted to the mast, then runs upward to the hounds, and then back down and has a shackle on it? I am not talking about the jib halyard. Any help you can give us would be appreciated. Phil

Gulf Stream

I sailed with Frank Durant across the Gulf Stream on his Flicka last winter. Our trip was also uneventful until we got to Florida and hit a thunderstorm. The trip took 18 hours with a nice breeze and moderate seas. We motor sailed averaging a little over 4 knots. I suspect it would take a while longer in my M15, but given the right weather I think the boat would handle it just fine. Some amount of night sailing is necessary and maybe an entire night if speed is low. In my opinion one valuable piece of equipment for this passage is some kind of self steering setup. We had a Raymarine tiller pilot which broke part way across so we had to hand steer most of the way. This was not a problem with two of us to steer, but if I were single handling it would be very tedious and tiring to hand steer all the time. Frank has made the crossing a number of times in many different conditions. Maybe he'll chime in with a wild story or two. Rick M15 #337 Bluebird

Thanks, everyone, for the candid comments. Apparently the quarter berth in an M-17 is only suitable for smaller kids or storage. I may have to look for a larger boat to really sleep 3 comfortably in the cabin. (Rhodes 22, perhaps, for later. Same keel design as the Montgomery.) If I have to rely on the cockpit and a boom tent, I may just keep the SeaPearl for awhile. I made a platform for the cockpit, and have slept three boys there,(two grandsons and a friend) with me in the pop-up tent in the forward compartment, but they were very crowded. However, there is enough room for my two grandsons in the cockpit, who are my regular crew. I really don't have a suitable tent enclosure for the boys, though; they get wet with dew or eaten by mosquitoes on the local lakes. Perhaps a better investment for me for now would be to tackle making or finding an awning company to build a good tent enclosure for my SeaPearl cockpit. That would save me from buying a larger vehicle now, to tow a bigger boat. The SeaPearl (only 600 lbs. before water ballast of 250 lbs.) is a great boat for lakes and protected waters; It is essentially an open boat,though, so I'll just have to postpone my ambitions to cruise the Bahama's until I can get something capable of blue water trips.
