Mark, Thanks for the advice. I've been debating between oil and varnish, but never thought of using both! M15 conversion has started :-)

The conversion of my M15 to a gaff rigged cutter has started. The old mast is stripped down. The new gaff and boom are in transit, the bowsprit has been fabricated and I am working on the bow/forestay attachement. After all of the components are completed, including sealers and varnish, the drilling and cutting will start. Then things are serious. I have tried to post a thread on the the trailer sailer BBS but the component picture won't load so all you can see is the sail plan as it exists right now. http://bbs.trailersailor.com/forums/montgomery/index.cgi/read/273 I need to reduce the sail area a bit ( I would like to be under 140 sq ft) and move the CE forward a little. I will likely lower the gaff and shorten the foot a bit. I won't order the sails until I have the rigging complete and can dummy the sails up with light line to get some good measurements. I am thinking of going with barn red sails. Anne Westlund was using a color called NASCAR red on her Slipper 17 in the the North Channel. The tan bark is too dark for my taste and the I have had the Egyptian cotton for 8 years. Time for something new - hmm robins egg blue? Your comments would be appreciated. Hey All, First, Merry Christmas to everyone! I'll be on duty tomorrow and not be able to post so I wanted to get that out there. My website has been stagnating as of late so I decide to give it a new look and try to make it a little easier to navigate. The "Homepage" was getting pretty cluttered. All the same old pages and info are still on there. I found that I enjoy reading the blogs that some of you have been doing so I decided to give that a try for a while and see how it goes. Yes, you are right, I am a shameless self-promoter and love to hear my self bloviate (as Bill O'Rielly) would say! hahaha. The "monty store" page will be used for when we print up Monty t-shirts and stuff but that's it. I don't have any right now so it's not active. You may or may not have noticed also that Piczo finally got it right and allows you to use their services without having them put advertising all over it for a very reasonable fee. As soon as I saw that option I jumped at it! I can't believe the amount of photos that they allow you upload. I think I have over 1600 photos on there now. Drop by if you get the itch to waste some time and I do mean "Waste" some time! Brightwork refinish

Hi Rick, I recently refinished the brightwork on my M-15. I took the wood off the boat since it was very weathered. I used the two part teak cleaner first. I just used a rag and washed very lightly so that I wouldn't destroy the wood between the grain like I did the time I used a brush!, and it seemed to clean up quite well. I used 3 coats Cetol Light followed by 3 coats Cetol gloss. I just used teak oil for the companionway hatch boards and the cockpit grate, thinking that these would probably get pretty banged up with a hard finish. The boat looks beautiful and so far so good (it's only been 6 or 8 months so far. . .) Wondering if anyone out there has a pattern for a mast-up cover for the M-15. I want to keep my brightwork looking good after all of that work! Mark 1981 M-15 Seabright San Diego

Bones et al.: Thanks for the info on finishes -- that's a task I am about to undertake and I appreciate the info. Rick: I just received my new Sailor's Tailor cover, and it's great. Perfect fit and very well made. I have had 2 of their covers for my Flying Scot and they have outperformed their claims, so I ordered one with no hesitation. I have a couple of suggestions I'll pass along to them, but it fits, it's strong, and secures well. Haven't trailered with it yet but I expect good performance. I'll get around to taking pictures (it's new and it makes the hull below look kinda tired :-(> ) Merry Christmas to all! Nick M-17 #69

Joe, Bob Rowland I think is the owner, and he also does he cover designs. I had noticed that the M-17 was not listed as a stock item and wondered why. I talked to Bob a number of times last winter when he was working on the M-17 design, but it's been a while so the memory might not be fresh. Feel free to use my name and he'll probably remember. Rick -- The cover will fit with the rudder mounted and you could just swivel the tiller up out of the way. My tiller and rudder are stowed when the boat is on the trailer, but you could leave them mounted when using it as a mooring cover. Nick
